Celebrate National Library Week, April 13-19, 2014
At a time when library usage is at an all-time high, libraries are really helping their communities thrive in these tough economic times. In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee’s goals were ambitious. They ranged from “encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time” to “improving incomes and health” and “developing strong and happy family life.” In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme “Wake Up and Read!” National Library Week is observed each year in April, generally the second full week. This year’s theme is “Lives Change @ Your Library.”
Adult Book Clubs
There is still time to read “Save Me” before our book clubs meet on Thursday, April 17. With this story, Lisa Scottoline weaves together a protective mother, a daughter, a bully, an explosion, and a backlash that probes questions about basic human nature as well as criminal culprits. Pick up your copy of the book at the library circulation desk, and then meet us at either the library at noon or Bruno’s Bar at 7:30pm.

Tween Program

‘Tweens ages 9-12 can join us on Monday, April 28 from 7-8pm for snacks, prizes, and our ‘Tween Trivia Challenge! ‘Tweens will test their knowledge of history, books, pop culture, and more during this fun and exciting game. So, if you have ever wondered if you should try out for Kids Week on Jeopardy, maybe you should test your skills in the comfort of your own hometown library! Registration is required, and opens for all ‘tweens on Monday, April 7.
Library Closure
The Library will be closed on Friday April 18th in observance of Good Friday and on Saturday April 19th for the Easter Holiday. The drop box on the Library porch will be available for returns throughout this closure.
