Young people (ages 5-11) are invited to an American Girl Gala on Tuesday, September 29th from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Library. This program will feature refreshments, festivities, crafts, and prizes. You are welcome to bring your own American Girl doll with you and there will be an opportunity to showcase her. You do not have to have an American Girl doll to attend the program.
Registration is required for this free program and begins on September 1st.
Parent/Child Book Club
The Briggs Library will be offering a new program this fall that allows children and their parents a chance to read the same book, and then come to the Library to discuss the work with others. We will be hosting a Parent/Child book club the 2nd Saturday of each month, starting October 10. The books chosen for the club are recommended for children in grades 4-6, but the club is open to all who can read and want to discuss the material. The first novel for this new program is The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. This charming story of a 12-year-old orphan boy who lives in the walls of a Paris train station is told in both pictures and text. Copies of the book and program registration will be available beginning Monday, September 14.
Pre-Reader Storytime
Life was meant to be colorful. Crayons and Paint and Pencils…THEY ROCK! Register your prereaders for this fun and creative storytime. Sessions are designed for independent listeners’ ages 4 to 6 years old. This program will feature colorful tales, creative art, music and a snack or game. So mark your calendar for Thursday evenings, 6:30-7pm, from October 15 – Nov. 19th. Registration is required and begins on September 17th. “We are a box of crayons, each one of us unique, but when we get together the picture is complete!”
Bookaholics
There is still time to read Five Days Left by Michigan author Julie Lawson Timmer before the Bookaholics Book Club meets on Thursday, September 17. The novel features two intertwining stories that explore the limits of endurance and the power of relationships. The Club will meet at 12:00pm at the Library or at 7:30pm at Bruno’s Bar.
Briggs Reads
Briggs Library is pleased to be hosting author Julie Lawson Timmer on Tuesday evening, September 22, from 6:30-7:30pm. Ms. Timmer will be at the Library to discuss her novel, Five Days Left, and perform a short reading. The Library has multiple copies of Ms. Timmer’s novel available in various formats, for those who would like to read it prior to her visit. The Briggs Reads! program and this concluding event have been generously sponsored by the Briggs Library Friends Group.
Mint Festival Royal Court Reading at the Library
Children of all ages are invited to listen to Queen Audrey deAlmeida and four members of her Mint Festival Court read royal tales on Saturday, September 19th from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Library. Children are welcome to come in royal princess or prince costumes. Registration is not required for this free program.
September is “Library Card Sign-Up Month”
What’s happening in libraries today? They’re more about doing than borrowing–more about connecting than simply plugging in. Whether you want to get involved in your community, find a job, start a business, or simply get ahead, your library card is the key to opportunity. Libraries are transforming. The library wants to remind parents that one of the most important school supplies of all is at your local library…it’s a library card! Studies show that children who are read to in the home from birth on up and who use the library perform better in school. September is a time when the Briggs Library joins with the American Library Association to promote getting a library card. Resources are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and a knowledgeable staff that support academic achievement. Check it out!
