Recycled computers go to kids

When Clinton Conservation District started the Computers for Kids recycling program last year, they had no idea how successful and satisfying it would be.
“I never imagined how satisfying this would be,” Gary said, “and Santa delivered six of the computers in person with assistance from his helper. It was special to see the looks on the faces of those children.”
In all, 21 computers were donated from which parts were cannibalized from some to get the 13 useable units. This year Gary and Chris are going to try to do 20 computers and spread it to more school systems in the county. Last year three school systems participated.
“We are going to start early, so we can be ready for our deliveries a few days before Christmas,” said Chris, “We will need the extra time to get everything in good working order and when we deliver, we offer an hour or two of help to get the child used to the computer.”
So if you have an older computer sitting around that works, and you want to put it towards a good cause, contact the Clinton Conservation District at (989) 224-3720, ext. 3.
A typical system should be at a minimum Pentium 4 with 512 MB memory and 40 GB hard drive. A good working monitor, mouse and keyboard are also desired. The systems are then cleaned up, all installed software and data is removed, and re-loaded with non-proprietary software, including games and programs to promote the learning experience.
“By the way,” Gary said, “Santa called after last year and wished to thank the teachers and school administrators that helped us identify the children chosen and also to the residents that donated their computers to enable Santa to do his thing.”

Gary Fritz, Conservation District executive director and his son Chris managed to rebuild and deliver 13 computers to younger children in need in the community.
