Local officer recognized


Lt. Michael Carey was recognized by the US Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation on November 14, 2011 for his investigation into the Fifth Third Bank Robbery that happened in St. Johns on November 5, 2009.
That incident ended with the bank robber being arrested in March 2010.
Director Robert S. Mueller issued a certificate of appreciation saying, “The FBI extends its appreciation for your outstanding assistance in a joint investigative effort. Your contributions were immeasurable, and you have the gratitude of the FBI for all you did to help accomplish the objectives of the investigation”.
The suspect was Ronald Lee Nelson, 45 years old, from Gladwin, MI. He had previously served several years in prison for bank robbery. Nelson later confessed to committing seven bank robberies since his release from prison.
“Due to the direct actions of Lt. Carey, a career bank robber is serving 12-20 years in prison”, said Chief Mike Madden. “We are both proud and fortunate to have him in our organization.”
