Mary Ann Ellickson, chili cook-off chair, crosses lables with Larry Moeggenberg as interest builds up for the 4th annual chili cook-off challenge set for this year’s Snow Day at the Emerald.
A number of area chili cooks already are rattling their ladles in preparation for the 4th Annual Chili Cook-Off challenge that has come to be the foremost attraction during Sparrow Clinton Hospital Auxiliary’s winter event, Snow Day at the Emerald. As in the past, a number of local businesses have entered the contest, but, according to chili contest chair, Mary Ann Ellickson, “This year we’re thinking outside of the box.”
The reference is to the fact that past entries have been primarily business sponsored, and this year Auxiliary members are encouraging anyone who has a “secret chili recipe” to consider entering the fray. It’s all for a good purpose, as proceeds from the yearly gathering are directed in support of Sparrow Clinton Hospital. “We know that everyone joins in support of the hospital,” explained Ms. Ellickson, “and the Snow Day chili cook-off is a wonderful way to share a fun evening of good food and good time.” Information and details for entering the contest may be secured by contacting Ms. Ellickson at 989 224-8288.
Meanwhile, the main event – Snow Day at the Emerald – is set for Saturday, January 28 at the Emerald golf course and this year’s entertainment is in the form of a karaoke contest during which time Auxiliary members will be seeking a winner to be identified as The Emerald Idol.
Overall chair, Kathie Clock explained that past attendees have suggested a karaoke event, “So we took them seriously and added it to our schedule,” she said. “From early ticket sales, we expect it to be as hot as the chili contest!” A bonfire (outside, of course!) will light up the darkness and a cash bar will enliven the spirits.
The evening will begin around 4:30 p.m. and include the cook-off at 5 followed by dinner at 6:30. The karaoke challenge is set for 7:30. All this for only $15.00 per person, but tickets must be purchased by January 21. They are available from any Auxiliary member or by calling Shelley Gunther, 989 224-6137 or Kathie Clock, 989 834-2412. Tickets are also being sold at the Gift Shop, located near the entrance to the hospital.
