Elvis’ visit a study in mutual admiration

In what he described as the “nicest facility I’ve played,” Jake Slater brought Elvis Presley to the St. Johns High School Auditorium March 21st and after an Elvis tribute of over two hours, exited the stage, leaving behind an audience standing with applause that didn’t cease until MC Keith Mino pressed for an encore.
Graciously “Elvis” responded with two additional songs, finally bringing to a close an evening in what event co-chair Diane Zuker could only describe as “overwhelmingly successful!”

Slater, who is an award winning Elvis tribute artist, was surrounded by a sprinkling of family members and ardent followers who, on two occasions during the performance, took to the floor of the auditorium, thrilling the audience of over 400 by singing and dancing to the Elvis beat. The impromptu bit attracted several youngsters to join in, despite the period music, which was well before their years.
Slater’s tribute ranged from Elvis’ very beginning to his last hit album along with brief anecdotes of events and activities of his professional life, all of which the audience took in along with unmistakable Elvis signatures such as “Hound Dog,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” and “Are You Lonesome Tonight.” Many of the songs – particularly following intermission – were highlighted by typical Elvis enhancements, such as distribution of small fuzzy animals to audience members and the scarf and kiss routine that was shared by young and old alike.
The evening, sponsored by Sparrow Clinton Hospital Auxiliary, was but one of several fund raising events the group has held or is planning to assist in payment of a $100,000 pledge toward the new emergency wing. That cause was abetted throughout the evening by encouragement from Slater to participate in a needed and worthwhile improvement.
Additionally, audience members participating in a VIP seating arrangement were invited to an “Elvis” visit and photo opt before the show. Pictures were snapped by local photographer Jack Heckaman and appear on his web site www.jaxxphotos.com. All proceeds from orders will be contributed to Sparrow Clinton Auxiliary to assist in fulfillment of their gift.
