Go outside and play during Free Fishing Weekend

Lawmaker says opportunities abound in the area June 13-14

State Rep. Tom Leonard today encouraged residents to take advantage of Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend on June 13-14 by going after a keeper at one of the area’s lakes or rivers.

Rep. Leonard, R-DeWitt, said Clinton County is home to 27 lakes and Gratiot County has 15 lakes, all holding the promise of game fish. In addition, the Maple and Looking Glass rivers are prospective fishing spots. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources waives all fishing license fees during the weekend, although fishing regulations remain in place.

“If you go fishing, take a friend or family member who might not have tried the sport before,” Rep. Leonard said. “It might just instill them with a love for the hobby that they will embrace and possibly pass on to future generations.”

Research shows that younger people today do not have the same chances to go fishing that were enjoyed by past generations.
