Families from Clinton County were among the more than 4,300 parents, children and community leaders from across the state who braved the rain today for a chance to talk to their lawmakers during the fifth annual Star Power 2011 event on the lawn of the state Capitol.
The day-long event began with a parade led by the Waverly High School marching band from Cooley Law Stadium, home of the Lansing Lugnuts, to the Capitol.
The gathering was the largest Star Power since the event began in 2007. More than 3,500 people attended the 2010 event, which is annually one of the biggest citizen gatherings on the Capitol lawn.

“Star Power is always a wonderful chance for lawmakers to hear one-on-one from their constituents about the need for us to continue making school readiness a primary focus, not a secondary one,” said Judy Y. Samelson, CEO of the Early Childhood Investment Corp. (ECIC), which sponsors the event with private dollars.
“But it was particularly important this year because of all the new lawmakers in Lansing. They needed to hear this message about how important these investments in young children are to not only parents but to the state’s economic revival.”
