Eighth Annual on Tuesday April 23
A little over nine years ago, a $25,000 gift from the estate of Elsie Dickinson spurred the renewal of the foundation currently supportive of Briggs Public Library. Since then an annual “Honors and Authors Night” commemorates that revival and pays tribute to benefactors and supporters of the foundation and of the library itself. This year’s gathering is slated for Tuesday April 23 and will be held at the Emerald Golf course.
The evening features Michigan based authors who have published books and informational pieces with subjects ranging from fiction to documentaries. St. Johns’ own Lynn Henning, Detroit Free Press sports writer, was the first guest speaker and the most recent presenter was Fred Stonehouse, an expert in maritime history.
This year’s guest will be Michael Patrick Shiels, widely known for his work in news and entertainment radio along with authoring numerous columns and manuscripts. Locally, Shiels is probably well known from his many years as a morning radio host on stations operating in the Lansing area.
John Sirrine, chair of the Briggs Library Foundation, explained that Shiels’ appearance is in keeping with the quality of accomplished speakers the foundation annually seeks. “Shiels has a strong Michigan based history,” he said. “He’s worked with the legendary J.P. McCarthy and other well known radio, entertainment and sports figures, along with the honor of being selected as Network Personality of the Year multiple times by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. We’re confident he’ll provide an informative and entertaining time.”
As in previous years, admission to the two-hour event, which begins at 7 p.m., has been set at $50.00 per person. Proceeds benefit the Briggs Public Library Foundation. Admittance includes a social hour with generous hors d’oeuvres before and following the formal program.
