Kiwanis Mintfest, August 1
One of the long-established events on the annual Mint Festival program is the St. Johns Kiwanis sponsored tennis tournament. Players from across Michigan sign up to compete and long-time chair, Chris Bouck, anticipates another full slate.
“We’ve had inquiries about the tournament this year, which always is encouraging,” he said. “As in the past, we expect both men’s and women’s categories to be full.”
And, while is seems a way off, deadline for registration is Aug. 1, just a little over three weeks away. Sign-ups may be completed by mail. Forms may be obtained from Briggs Public Library, St. Johns Chamber of Commerce, City of St. Johns Recreation Dept. or printed on line at mmrn.org/tennis.
Registration fees, payable before play, are Singles, $20.00 plus one can of new tennis balls; Doubles, $30.00 per team plus two cans of new tennis balls per team. A week-end parking pass will be $4.00. Parking and general entry must be approached from Townsend Road access.

As in previous years, play will be the best of three sets and the breaks at six games all. Entries will be limited to to two of three possible divisions.
Singles divisions include boys 12-14 and 15-18. The same age levels will apply to girls groupings.
Age groups for both men and women are 19-34 and 35 and over.
Doubles divisions for boys are ages 12-14 and 15-18. Girls age divisions are the same. For both men and women, one age group prevails, 19 and over.
Schedule of play will be as follows: Friday August 10, A.M. All Juniors; P.M. female doubles and male singles. Saturday Auggust 11, Male doubles; female singles and mixed doubles. Sunday August 12, doubles finish.
All entrants, singles or doubles, will receive a commemorative T-shirt identifying the St. Johns Kiwanis 2012 Terry Cornwell Tennis Tournament, conducted in memory of Mr. Cornwell a popular high school counselor taken early in life by diabetes.
