Clinton County’s newest park, Motz Park in Greenbush Township, suffered its first fatality on Sunday afternoon, July 17 when an Owosso man drowned while trying to swim across the lake.
Billy Lee Loburg, 43, was at the beach with his daughter and friends when he decided to attempt the crossing. The victim was about two-thirds of the way across the 300-yard lake when he began struggling. Although others nearby were ready to assist almost immediately, they were not able to revive him.
Loburg was transported to Sparrow Clinton Hospital in St. Johns where he was pronounced dead.
It’s the first drowning ever reported at Motz Park, which opened last year, and the first in the county this year, according to Sheriff Wayne Kangas.
Clinton County Deputies were assisted by the St. Johns Police Department, Clinton Area Fire and Rescue, Clinton Area Ambulance and Clinton County Central Dispatch.
