Meridian Community Band plays American music

June 25 in St. Johns
An evening of American music favorites is on tap when the Meridian Community Band presents “Americans We” June 25 at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell as part of the weekly Concert in the Park summer series. There is no admission for the concert that begins at 7 p.m. in the lovely outdoor venue; lawn seating.
Musical director Carolyn Sherrill has composed a program that includes a wide range of American music genres including marches, Broadway, folk songs, rock and roll, spirituals, and patriotic favorites. Featured vocal soloist Josh Palkki will sing “You Raise Me Up,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.”
Founded in 1977, the Meridian Community Band performs 12 to 20 concerts per season at venues across mid-Michigan. All adults playing with high school-level proficiency are eligible to join. Currently the band consists of approximately 85 members, ranging from high school through 85 years of age.
“The elements of community and friendship among the members are highlights of the group especially with the wide variety of generations where everyone mentors each other,” Sherrill says. “MCB isn’t just a group of musicians – the bond of music and friendship runs deep and is valued by its members as they serve together.”
