It would appear that last week’s Mystery Photo wasn’t much of a mystery to a number of our readers. Among those who correctly identified the old Sugar Bowl on Clinton Avenue were: Charlotte Taylor, Craig Knight, Jonathan Pulling, Donita Sykora, Todd Matthews, Cheryl Prichard, Don Rice and Mrs, Ralph Atkinson.
Cheryl added that they had the best Cherry Cokes in the world.
Jonathan writes: “That is a photo of the interior of the Sugar Bowl. The large coin operated record player is missing. It stood in front of the double doors leading to the work room where George Papas made candy. One of those doors was usually open the view to the back was blocked by the large record player. I think that it had about two dozen 78 records. I never heard it play. I believe that it was broken as George and I listened to music on a radio while we made Christmas candy (canes and ribbon). Mrs. Papas would supervise me when I first started. I enjoyed working for George and his Mother. It was my first hourly paying job at 25 cents per hour. I found out during George’s wake that I and Denny Cornwell were the only non family members to work in the store.”
[Editor’s note: Jonathan and Dennis may have been the only non family members to work there during their generation; but earlier when Nick also ran a restaurant there, some of Martha’s friends including Mildred and Belva Robinson served as waitresses during their high school years. Martha was George’s older sister.]
