Elaine Bashore
Elaine Bashore was born Elaine Agnes Miller on December 29, 1925 in Fowler, Michigan to John and Martha Miller. She was preceded in death by brothers Vernon, Walter, Jack and Ernest. Surviving siblings include beloved sister Marie Pearson, brothers Robert (Eva), Roy (Treva) and Hughie (Jeanette). Her years growing up among her nine closely-knit siblings on a farm in rural Fowler formed an indelible backdrop for the rest of her life. She regularly referred to herself as nothing more than “a simple country girl” and took great joy from simple pursuits. She graduated from Fowler High School in 1944. Despite her rural upbringing, as a young woman she flirted with the attractions of “city life.” Today, the memory generates smiles, but then, she and her sister Marie aspired to be “Lansing Girls.”
Elaine married John H. Bashore of St. Johns on September 2, 1950 and helped raise two children, Mark and Steph. Later, she was employed at Saylor Beale in St. Johns and spent 16 fulfilling years as a teacher aid at Leonard Elementary school in Ovid, retiring in 1984. Her richest joy in life involved children—her own, those she accompanied on the school playground and her adored grandchildren, Audrey and Ethan. They were forever ruined by their Grandma’s legendary pumpkin roll. All her pleasures were simple: bird watching, her dog Bart and her Grand-dog Bear, shopping, gardening and the occasional late Winter vacation to Florida to visit daughter Steph and to watch the Detroit Tigers play pre-season baseball. Above all, she will be remembered for her warmth and kindness, which earned her the heartfelt affection and love of many people.
A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Mrs. Bashore’s life is scheduled for Friday, April 15 at the United Church of Ovid at Noon, lunch provided. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National Audubon Society. Arrangements were entrusted to Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns, MI
