Edmund Joseph Thelen
Edmund Joseph Thelen passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, June 6, 2011 at the age of 95. Ed was born on August 6, 1915, the son of George and Anna (Koenigshnecht) Thelen of Westphalia, where he grew up on the homestead farm which he later bought when he married Lillian Wieber on May 6, 1942. Ed was a member of St. Mary’s Church his entire life; he was an active member of the church choir as well as many other parish groups. Ed was a hardworking farmer, he also worked at the State of Michigan, retiring after 10 years of service. Ed and Lillian spent 26 summers at their beloved Jordan Lake cottage where they enjoyed entertaining, fishing, and relaxing. Ed was skilled in woodworking and proudly built many grandfather clocks for the family and friends.
Ed was known for his love of music, and was self taught, he was able to play many instruments, he entertained locally for over 75 years, first with a string band known as Louie and the Western Entertainers. He then kept very busy performing at weddings with the Thelen’s Orchestra for many years. Later in life, Ed, Lillian and the Singalongers brought smiles to the faces of many residents at various nursing homes with their music.
Surviving are his wife, Lillian of 69 years; children Joyce (Carl) Wohlfert of Monument, CO, Gary (Rosie) Thelen of Lansing, MI, Janice (Marv) Weber of Pewamo, MI, Sharon (Tony) Hengesbach of Westphalia, MI, Glenn (Linda) Thelen of Wyoming, MI, Diane Fedewa of Lansing, MI, Thomas (Kim) Thelen of Westphalia, MI; 24 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Maybelle Thelen of Westphalia; many nieces and nephews. Ed is preceded in death by his sisters Eva Simon, Clara Knoop; brothers Alfred, Otto, and Gregor Thelen.
The Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be celebrated by Rev. James Conlon at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 9, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m., Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia. The rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m., Tuesday and 3 and 8 p.m., Wednesday. Arrangements are with the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
Mary Hull
Mary Hull, 74, of Danville, Illinois passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at the Hawthorne Inn of Danville. Mary was born on August 5, 1936 in Lansing, Michigan daughter of Lewie and Mildred (Graham) Hull. Mary graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. John’s, Michigan and received her degree in occupational therapy from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
She worked in the mental health field in Traverse City, Michigan; Little Rock, Arkansas, and Danville, Illinois. Mary had numerous talents in arts and crafts, decorating, and loved antiques. Her strong faith and witness brought her to her Ridgeview Baptist Church family where she was an active member. She was a Red Hat lady and belonged to or supported many local organizations.
Survivors include sister Arlene Hull; nieces: Marcia (Michael) Reese, Rebecca Hull, Brenda (Cliff) Hull, Lisa Hull, and Candy (Mychael) Luighibiel; nephew Lewie (Michele) Hull, four great nephews and her beloved Siamese cats Buddy and Missy. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers Richard, Douglas, and William.
A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns with Pastor Cayle Beagle officiating . In lieu of flowers please make memorials to Ridgeview Baptist Church or the Danville, IL Humane Society. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com. The Osgood Funeral Home is the local home providing services to the family.
Jewell O. Eger
Jewell O. Eger, 82 of rural Ovid, MI died Saturday, June 04, 2011 at her home. Jewell was born on March 18, 1929 in Durant, FL the daughter of A. H. and Charlotte I. Brown. She graduated from Turkey Creek, Fl High School and Southeastern Bible Institute. On May 30, 1952 she married Rev. Joseph F. Eger Jr. in Lakeland FL. He preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 2010. Jewell taught Sunday School for many years, loved cooking, gardening and sewing.
She is survived by sons, Joseph W. (Tessa) Eger and David F. (Anna) Eger both of Ovid; daughter, Joy (Keith) Currie of Ovid, 2 grandchildren and 3 step grandchildren; brothers Wayne Brown of Lithia, FL, Eldon Brown of Brandon FL, Russell Brown of Lithia Fl and Melbourne Brown of Jamestown, ND; sister Opal Albritton of Plant City, FL
Sister-in-law, Mary Ann Barrett of Ovid. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Monday, June 6, 2011, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorials may be made to the family.
Craig “Bart” Bartholomew
Craig “Bart” Bartholomew passed peacefully at home on May 24, 2011. Born May 31, 1951 to Ladd and Jean Mary Bartholomew in St. Johns, Michigan he graduated from St. Johns High School in 1969 as a standout athlete.
Bart joined the United States Marines in 1969 and served in Vietnam. He later moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado where he met Kim Ilene Morrison, later marrying on September 21, 1978. He took a job as an engineer with Sprint Telecommunications, working for them until 2009. During his time in Ft. Collins he actively participated as a soccer coach and referee within the local community. He enjoyed fishing, camping, riding motorcycles, traveling, and the time spent playing with his grandchildren.
Bart is survived by his wife of 32 years, and best friend, Kim; sons, Levi Bartholomew of Westminster, Colorado and Myles Bartholomew of Ft. Collins, Colorado; 6 grandchildren, Kaleb, Ethan, Bryanna, Donovan, Dalton, and Vitorio; sister, Val Matice of Florida; brother Ken Bartholomew of Delaware; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother William Bartholomew of Michigan.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, June 10, 2011 at St. Alban’s Church in Windsor, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Resthaven Funeral Home, 8426 S Hwy 287, Fort Collins, CO 80525, which will then be donated in Bart’s name to Pathway’s Hospice of Northern Colorado and Run for the Wall veteran’s organization.
Pete Smith
Pete Smith, age 33, beloved husband, dad, son and brother passed away on June 1, 2011. He was born on May 27, 1978 the son of Peter and Linda (Platte) Smith. Pete was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo. He was a machine operator for the Mahle Corp. and enjoyed being an archery bow technician sharing his skills with his sons and brothers. Pete enjoyed hunting, playing in a fantasy football league and being an all around handyman, always tinkering with different projects. He was a source of information to anyone. Pete loved children always making them feel special through his actions and words. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Reynold and Irene Smith, Norman and Margie Platte and Bob Steere along with several aunts and uncles.
Surviving are his wife, Katie; sons Kaleb and Mason; parents Peter and Linda Smith; in-laws, Dave and Kristie Steere; siblings Stephanie (Todd) Thelen, Corey (Robin), Joel (Amber), Matt (Kelli), Aaron “Hump” (Kristen), Damian (Malynda), Nate, Jordan, and Gabe Smith; sisters-in-law Becky (Nathan) Akin and Shannon Steere; brother-in-law, Jeremy (Tabby) Steere; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Charlon O. Mason at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Saturday at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, Westphalia. The rosary will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m.. There will be NO visitation on Sunday. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, Westphalia. The rosary will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m.. Memorial contributions may be made to a Trust Fund for Pete’s boys. Arrangements are with Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home.
