Clarence “Gene” Hinton
Clarence “Gene” Hinton, age 77, of St. Johns, MI died Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes St. Johns, MI on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 1:00 P.M., with Rev. Dan Maas officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 4 -8 P.M. at the funeral home.
Gene was born in Gratiot County, MI on June 17, 1935, the son of Clarence Lee and Bernice (Jason) Hinton. Gene married Vicki C. Hanson on November 3, 1973. Gene retired from General Motors after 42 years of service as a skilled trades tool & die maker in the experimental machine shop. He took great pride in his work. Gene’s passion with woodworking led him, at age 70, to build his and Vicki’s dream home on their farm. All of the interior woodworking was harvested and milled from their woods. Gene was active in the Mid-Michigan Street Rod Association and the Goldwing Motor Cycle Club.
He is survived by his wife Vicki Hinton of St. Johns, MI, daughter Janie Kay and Brad Quinn of St. Johns, MI, daughter Mary Jo and Werner Bartels of Tonganoxie, KS, son Gary Lee Hinton of St. Johns, MI, daughter Cheri Lynn and Todd Krajniak of Lansing, MI, daughter Nichole Renae and Jim Berridge of St. Johns, MI, 18 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Gene is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Harold and Janice Hinton of Middleton, MI, father-in-law Fred Hanson of Higgins Lake, MI, brother-in-law Ron and Nancy Hanson of Villa Hills, KY, his beloved little dog Gypsy Rose and many other special family and close friends. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Tom Langdon, mother-in-law Virginia Hanson, sister-in-law Mary Lou Hanson and brother-in-law Michael Hanson.

Alberta Irrer
Alberta Irrer passed away, April 28, 2013 at the age of 96. Born July 31, 1916, in Fowler, MI, she was the daughter of Albert and Augustina (Hafner) Martin. Alberta married Norman Irrer in Fowler on October 18, 1941 who preceded her in death on June 9, 1986.
Alberta is survived by her six children, Tom (Marilyn) Irrer of St. Johns, Jean Reed of Colorado Springs, CO, Dick (Deborah) Irrer of Okemos, Kathy (Gary) Wilson of Traverse City, Jim (Corliss) Irrer of Ann Arbor, Joseph Irrer of Farmington Hills, 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norman Irrer and sisters Gertrude Ruddy and Sister Rita Martin, O.P. as well as one brother, Robert Martin.
A memorial Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns with Fr. Michael Williams presiding. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. with a vigil service being held at 7 p.m. at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns. The family is planning a Celebration of Life to be held in August. Memorial donations may be made in Alberta’s name to the American Cancer Society, 1755 Abbey Rd., East Lansing, MI 48823 or Briggs Public Library, 108 East Railroad Street, St. Johns, MI 48879.
The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Homes.


Thomas D. Thurston
Thomas D. Thurston died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the age of 52. He was born December 19, 1960 in St. Johns the son of Leo and Janet (Kaser) Thurston. Tom was a graduate of St. Johns High School and enjoyed watching MSU football and playing video games.
Surviving are his father and step-mother, Leo and Janice Thurston; sister, Brenda (Bill) Gillpin of St. Johns; brother William of Lansing; step-daughter, Grace; step-son, Logan; grandson, Elijah; uncle and aunts, Roger and Verna Thurston and Jan Howell. He was preceded in death by his mother Janet.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 27, 2013 at First United Methodist Church 200 E. State St., St. Johns with Pastor Ellen Zienert officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association 30200 Telegraph Rd. Suite 105 Bingham Farms, MI 48025. The family was assisted with these arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.
