Kevin James Barrett
Kevin James Barrett, 50 of Berrien Center, MI passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at his home. Kevin was born November 3, 1963 in St. Johns, MI to Keith and Nancy (Osborn) Barrett. He graduated from St. Johns High School in 1982. On February 14, 2005 he married Debra Kay Large in Cassopolis, MI. He was a collector of antiquities and curiosities. Kevin was an avid historian and story teller who could always make you laugh.
Kevin is survived by his wife Debra Barrett of Berrien Center, MI; children Marcie L. Barrett of Dewitt, MI, Brandon C. Barrett, Brittnie V. Barrett and Monica M. Barrett all of Lansing MI; father Keith Barrett of St. Johns, MI; siblings Brian Barrett of Haslett, MI, Susan (John) Trudeau of Mt. Pleasant, MI, and Craig (Karyn) Barrett of Eaton Rapids, MI; uncles Richard (Tish) Osborn of Minneapolis, MN, William Richards of St. Johns, MI and Fr. Douglas Osborn of Dewitt, MI; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and longtime friend Kurt Hufnagel. Kevin was preceded in death by his mother Nancy in December, 2013.
A Mass will be Celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 24, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden St., in St. Johns, MI 48879 with Fr. Douglas Osborn officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Friends may visit from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday, March 23, 2014 with a rosary being prayed at 7:00 P.M. at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns, MI. Arrangements have been entrusted to Heritage Chapel in Berrien Springs.
Carl E. Burk
Carl E. Burk, 83 of rural St. Johns died at his home on March 17, 2014. He was born on September 13, 1930 in St. Johns, MI the son of Clarence and Hazel (Rhines) Burk. Carl worked first as a dairy farmer and later as a milk truck driver. On September 20, 1958 he married Joyce Stucky in Detroit. He served in the U.S. Army in Panama during the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing and reading.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, children Sandra Burk, David Burk, Sheila (Doug) Beck, Mary (Steve) Whitelock and Ruth Burk, 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, nephew Christopher Isaac whom he raised. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant child, sister and brother-in-law, Martha (Leon) Isaac.
Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 11:00 A.M, with Pastor Tim Knaus officiating. Burial will follow at Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Friday, March 21, 2014, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorials may be given to Lansing City Rescue Mission or Sparrow Clinton Hospice.
Annette L. Vance
Annette L. Vance, age 65 of St. Johns, MI died at Hazel Findlay Country Manor on March 17, 2014. She was born on August 27, 1948 in Lansing, MI the daughter of Charles and Barbara (VanHalst) Stack. Annette graduated from Everett High School and attended LCC. She had worked in the Medical Records Dept of Clinton Memorial Hospital, retiring in 2013. Annette loved animals, treated all kids like they were her own, caring and providing for all. She made the best of being a single mom. She loved cooking and hosting family dinners, making all those around her feel loved. She had a brilliant sense of humor, catching many off guard. She was a proud grandmother and loved to read and be a part of book clubs.
She is survived by daughter, Sara A. (David) Patterson and son Jesse C. (April) Vance both of St. Johns and grandchildren, Kate and Megan Patterson.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Thursday, March 20, 2014, 6-8 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society.
Darrell L. Garner
Darrell L. Garner, 44 died unexpectedly on March 14, 2014. He was born on December 1, 1969 in Lansing, MI the son of Gale L. and Betty J. (Newhall) Garner. Darrell graduated from St. Johns High School and worked as an auto mechanic at Gary’s Garage in St. Johns. He loved snowmobiling, hunting, being outdoors and his family and friends. On May 9, 2008 he married Judy A. Feldpausch in St. Johns.
Darrell is survived by his wife Judy, Mother, Betty J. Garner, son Travis, step-children, Jordan Garner, Gavin and Garrett Halverson and sister Cheryl Garner, niece, Heather Garner of St. Johns and nephews Colter Bossel of Marshall and Kyler Garner of St. Johns. He was preceded in death by his father, Gale and sister, Tracy Bossel.
Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, March 20, 2014 with Pastor Kathy-Leydorf-Keck officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, 2-8 P.M. Memorials may be given for Travis Garner.
Letha J. Walling
Letha J. Walling, of St. Johns, died Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the age of 88. Born January 3, 1926 she was the daughter of LeRoy and Levita (Sowles) Ambrook. Letha married Robert Walling on June 14, 1946 and he preceded her in death.
Surviving is her daughter, Jeannie (Al) Leckrone of St. Johns; sons, Thomas (Leanne) Walling of Munising, Mark (Erin) Walling of Norton Shores, and Robert Walling of Kansas City, MO; 13 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Letha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; son, David, and sisters; Hila, Ella, and Annabelle.
Letha took great pride in being a homemaker, and also enjoyed gardening, boating, and family vacations to the Upper Peninsula with her family. Letha and Robert also spent many enjoyable hours volunteering at the Payne Gilliam Scott Museum in St. Johns.
Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI 48879, with Pastor George Brinley officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Payne Gilliam Scott Museum, 106 Maple St., St. Johns, MI 48879.

Marilyn Nelson
Marilyn Nelson, of Ovid, MI died Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the age of 82. Born January 15, 1932 to Oscar and Winifred (Rushing) McHargue, Marilyn worked in a book distribution center.
She is survived by her sons, Keith (Suzanne) Nelson of Laingsburg, Randy Nelson of Ovid, Curt (Georgianna) Nelson of Chesterton, IN; grandchildren, Sunshine (Jesse) Roberson; Derrick (Aimee) Nelson, Justin (Jessica) Nelson, Crystal (Aaron) Stuart, Alexis Nelson, Trevor Nelson, Jennifer Meyers; great grandchildren, Madison Keel, Ava, Ryder, and Piper Roberson, Jaxson and Kenna Nelson; brother, James (Jeannie) McHargue; and many nieces and nephews. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, son, Jerry Dean Nelson, and brothers, Forest and Oscar McHargue.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid, MI 48866 Pastor Larry Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Stilson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the funeral home.
Donald E. Cox
Donald E. Cox died Friday, March 14, 2014 at the age of 70. He was born July 24, 1943 in St. Johns, MI the son of Lloyd and Emma (Schmitt) Cox. Don was a member of the Lansing Latvian Lutheran Church and served in the National Guard. He retired from General Motors in 1995 with 30 years of service and was a member of U.A.W. # 652.
Surviving is his wife, Astrida; one sister, Esther (Ken) Adair of Ionia; two brothers, Erwin Cox of Lowell and Paul (Nelli) Cox of Saranac and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was especially close to nephew, Alan (Connie) Garner and their children Neil and Emma.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Pastor Aija Graham officiating. Interment will follow at Lowe Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 10:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Lansing Latvian Lutheran Church 1020 S. Harrison Rd. East Lansing, MI 48823 or a charity of donor’s choice.
Almeda May Nemanis
Almeda May Nemanis, of Ovid, MI died Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at the age of 86. Born in Duplain Township on September 29, 1927, she was the daughter of Alfred Chester and Minerva (Slane) Dickenson. Almeda was a member of the United Church of Ovid and founded Nemanis Electric with her husband. She married Paul Nemanis on November 29, 1947 and he preceded her in death on January 22, 2003 after 55 years of marriage.
Almeda is survived by her son, Bill (Pam) Nemanis of Ovid; son-in-law, Robert Sippola of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Joseph Nemanis, Robin (Ken) Ellis, Paul (Hope) Sippola, Emily (Brooke Kilyanek) Sippola; seven great grandchildren, Alexis, Kaycee and Loghan Ellis, Hannah and Brock Sippola, and Sanna and Carl Kilyanek-Sippola; and sister, Irene Jumper of St. Johns. In addition to her husband, Paul, Almeda was preceded in death by her daughter, Suzanne Sippola; brothers, James and Ernest Dickenson; and sisters, Ethel Risley, Aletha Bartlett, and Mary Snyder.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, 232 E. Oak St, Ovid with Pastor Paul Damkoehler officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ovid. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday, March 16, 2014 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society of Mid-Michigan, 1755 Abbey Road, East Lansing, MI 48823 or the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, 1169 Oak Valley Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48108.
