L. Alice Thelen
L. Alice Thelen, 75 of St. Johns, MI died on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. She was born on December 21, 1938 in Bannister, MI the daughter of John and Susan (Podmajersky) Strachota. Alice graduated from Elsie High School in 1956 and Central Michigan University with a Masters Degree in Education. On June 21, 1958 she married Alan J. Thelen in Bannister. Alice was an elementary school teacher at St. Johns Public Schools for 22 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Art, crafts, cooking and sewing were her hobbies. Her family, especially her grandchildren, was the love of her life.
Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Alan; daughter Linda Thelen, son Tim Thelen, daughter Julie Aprill, son-in-law, Brian Aprill. Grandchildren, Nicole White, Brianna White, Tayler Thelen, Desmond White and Michael Thelen. One great grandson, Aidan Washburne. Alice was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014, 10:00 A.M at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Friday, May 16, 2014, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson Foundation, 30400 Telegraph Rd., Bingham Farms, MI 48025.
Duane Burl
Duane Burl, devoted and loving grandpa to Phinneaus and Dane, passed away, Wednesday, May 13, 2014 at the age of 64. He will be greatly missed by both family and friends, especially those he worked closely with at St. Johns High School.
Duane is survived by his wife, Teresa, and children; Robert, Sara (Jeremi), and Laura; grandchildren, Phinneaus and Dane; brothers, Douglas, Dennis (Missi), and Duncan Burl; nieces, Tamara Shutes Seabrook and Tina (Steven) Soria; and many more nieces and nephews. He loved each one.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI 48879 with Pastor Richard Laeder officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made directly to the family.
Hazel B. Johnson
Hazel B. Johnson of Maple Rapids, MI died Monday, May 13, 2014 at the age of 95. Born August 16, 1918 in Clinton County to Robert J. and Anna Melinda (Roberts) Hicks, Hazel worked in the manufacturing industry. She married Floyd Bishop in November 1937 and he preceded her in death in 1967. She married Roy Stewart and he preceded her in death and later married Robert Johnson, Sr. and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children; Gary (Judith) Bishop of Muir, Sharon (Robert) Johnson of St. Johns, Sandra (Roger) Childers of St. Ignace, Diane Tipton of Maple Rapids, Judy (Samuel) Alsup of Ocean Springs, MS; 19 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; 50 great great grandchildren; sister, Anna May Conklin; and many nieces and nephews. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Floyd Bishop, Roy Stewart, and Robert Johnson, Sr.; brothers, Elston, Fredrick, and Stanley; sisters, Ella and Marion; granddaughter, Dianna Bennett; grandson, LeRoy Childers; and son-in-law, Robert Tipton.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI 48879 with Pastor Cayle Beagle officiating. Burial will follow at Sowle Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Friday, May 16, 2014 at the funeral home. Paul F. Fox
Paul F. Fox passed away May 13, 2014. Born in Fowler, Michigan May 22, 1916, the son of Urban and Dorothy (Feldpausch) Fox. he was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Holy Name Society and formerly co-owned Fox Implement for 38 years. He was also a volunteer fireman. He graduated from Fowler High School in 1934. Paul married Helen J. Epkey on October 5, 1938 and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2013.
Surviving are two sons, Bill (Judy) Fox of St. Johns and Daniel Fox of Perrinton, three daughters, Susan (Ralph) Pung of Fowler, Jane (Steven) Nobis of St. Johns and Mary Lou (Alan) Harr of St. Johns, 19 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, three brothers, Mark (Marie) Fox of Fowler, John (Shirley) Fox of California and Louis Fox of Lansing, step-brothers/sisters, James (Bernadette) Fox, Clare (Nancy) Fox, Marvin (Sue) Fox, Rose Mary Marsal and Marlene Kreiger, sister-in-law, Ione Fox of Flint, brothers in law, Paul Graff and Neil Epkey. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Martha (Lenneman) Fox, and four brothers, infant Ambrose Fox and Claude, Hugo and Lloyd Fox, great grandchildren, Mary Fox, Sidney Pung, Evelyn Smith and Justin Fox.
He was a loving husband and father. He was married for 74 years to his high school sweetheart. A plain, humble, hard-working man, who could build or fix anything. He was an avid Fowler Eagles fan, not missing many sporting events over the years. He enjoyed golfing and hunting. The legacy that he leaves with his family is a deep faith in God and a love and respect of nature.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 16 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler, the concelebrants will be Fr. Dennis Howard and Fr. Bill Koenigsknecht. Burial will follow at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 14 from 7-9 p.m. with rosary at 8 p.m. and Thursday, May 15 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil service at 8 p.m. at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes in Fowler. Memorial donations may be made to the Most Holy Trinity Education Trust Fund.
The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Home.
Nellie A. Washburn
Nellie A. Washburn, 89 or rural St. Johns died at her home on May 10, 2014. Nellie was born on February 25, 1925 in Duplain Twp. the daughter of Walter B. and Alice F. (Parker) Kaufman. She graduated from Elsie High School in 1943 and on June 30, 1946 she married J. D. Washburn. He preceded her in death in 2012. Nellie enjoyed cooking, crocheting and her flowers. She had worked over 20 years at Clinton National Bank in Elsie.
Survivors are her children, Dee (Bill) Holley, Kam (Kathleen) Washburn, and Dan (Pam) Washburn all of Elsie and Rita (John) Craig of Holt, MI and 33 grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Junior Kaufman.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home with Dr. Donald R. Ferris-McCann officiating. Burial will follow at Duplain Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Monday, May 12, 2014, 5-8 P.M. and on Tuesday, Noon until service time. Memorials may be made to the Rochester Colony School.
Maxine M. Miller
Maxine M. Miller, of St. Johns, died Friday, May 9, 2014 at the age of 92. Born April 17, 1922 in Greenbush Township, Clinton County, MI to Luman Wilcox and Gladys A. (Dunham) Hall, Maxine worked as a cosmetology instructor at the Owosso Beauty Academy and was the Theater Manager and Owner of the Clinton Theater. She was a member of First Church of God in St. Johns. In 1946 Maxine married Victor H. Warren and he preceded her in death in 1963. She later married Robert H. Miller in 1974 and he preceded her in death in 2000.
Surviving are her daughters, Arla Ann McLaren, Jacqulin K. (Ralph) Snider, Nancy Jo Brant; brothers, Earl W. Hall of Venice, FL, Neil W. Hall of St. Johns; grandchildren; Becky (Chris) Herrington of Rockford, MI, Erik (Aman) Winslow of Red Hat, MN, Heather French of HI, Gregory (Debby) Snider of Elsie, Bonnie (Wm. Scott) Whelton of Williamston, Chasity (Stephen) Doughtery of OH, Jessie Brant of Riverview, FL; 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Victor Warren and Robert Miller; son, James H. Warren; a great grandson; son-in-law; Clay Carruthers; and sisters-in-law; Betty Hall, Ruth Hall, and Miggie Hall.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, May 12, 2014 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI 48879 with Pastor Chris Bones officiating. Burial at Duplain Cemetery will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 11AM-1PM Monday at the funeral home. Alice M. Pline
Alice M. Pline, 89 of St. Johns died on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. Alice was born on January 14, 1925 in Westphalia, MI the daughter of John and Amanda (Rademacher) Wohlfert. She married Francis Pline in Westphalia on September 10, 1946 and he preceded her in death on February 18, 1995. Alice was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Rita’s Altar Society, volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul Society for many years was a 4-H Leader. She enjoyed golfing, gardening, quilting and many other things.
Alice is survived by her children, Roy (Janet) Pline, Bruce (Irene) Pline, Glenn (Joyce) Pline Jacqueline (James Vasilenko) Berhhousen and Shelly (David) Mageli all of St. Johns, Jay (Anne) Pline of Portland, 16 grandchildren and 22.5 great grandchildren, also brother, Leon Wohlfert and sister, Laura Pline both of Westphalia. She was preceded in death by her husband Francis, a brother and 2 sisters.
