Omar Reynolds Gregory
Omar Reynolds Gregory went to be with the Lord November 13, 2014 at the age of 84. Omar and his twin brother Ellis were born on March 27, 1930, to Henry Reynolds and Gertrude Lee Gregory, in Springfield, MO. Raised in the St. Johns area with his 3 brothers, Omar graduated from St. Johns High School class of ’48. After high school, Omar enrolled in the U.S. Army as a cook and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After his service he returned to St. Johns working as a baker at Pierce Bakery, where he met his first wife, Mary Regina Gregory. They married in 1954 and raised their 6 boys in Lansing, and cared for his elderly mother until her death in 1990.
He worked as a baker for over 40 years in the Lansing area including Schafer’s, QD, Roma, and Pierce Bakery. Mary succumbed to cancer in December 1988. In 1998 Omar was blessed with love again when he married Patricia Jean Gregory, a devoted and loving wife that cared for him to the end. Omar was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and devoted his life to serving the Lord. Omar was a unique person who loved to talk scripture and was known for his goofy antics. As he himself predicted, Omar deteriorated on schedule.
Preceded in death by his brothers, Omar leaves behind his soul mate Patricia, their combined family of 11 children, 30 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, dog Bogie and many friends. Omar was preceded in death by his identical twin brother, Ellis Gregory, on January 11, 2013.
Visitation Sunday, November 16, 2-4, 6-8 p.m. at the Palmer, Bush and Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel. Funeral at Calvary Baptist Church on Monday, November 17, 11 a.m. with a visitation one-hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church in Omar’s memory.
Karen Rita Simon
Karen Rita Simon, age 59, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2014. She was born on January 13, 1955 in St. Johns, Michigan, the daughter of Leo and Laurina (Thelen) Simon. Karen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia, and loved being with people.
Surviving are her sisters, Alice (Bob) Pline, MaryAnn (Paul) Esch, Elizabeth (Julius) Schafer, Rosaline (Darryl) Schmitz, and Susan (Anthony) Pescatore; brothers, Edward (Kay) Simon, Bernard (Carol) Simon, William (Kathleen) Simon, and Mark (Beth) Simon; many nieces and nephews; her dog, “Mini”. Preceding her in death were her parents; sister, Kathleen Simon; brother-in-law, Ronald Rademacher.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 17, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia, with Rev. Eric Weber presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia. Rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, and a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Hazel Findlay Recreation Center, or to the Special Olympics, in memory of Karen. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes, Portland.
Vicky C. Doten
Vicky C. Doten, 70 of Ovid, MI died on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 in Sanilac County resulting from an automobile accident. Vicky was born on October 9, 1944 in Owosso, MI the daughter of Ronald and Mildred (Hettinger) Jorae. She graduated from Ovid High School in 1962 and on March 26, 1965 married Kenneth Doten. Vicky was a homemaker and had worked at Vaughn Seed Co. in Ovid and was an election Inspector for several years. She was active in the Red Hat Society, Ovid Library, was an avid reader, enjoyed helping families with needs, camping, being with friends and going to Florida for the winters.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, children Kathy Schroeder of Holt, MI, Kurt (Laura) Doten of Wilmington Delaware, and Kris (Andy Cooper) Doten of Round Rock, Texas grandchildren, Reina and Dominic Doten. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews brother Dale (Mary) Jorae of St. Johns and sister Margaret (Vaughn) Hawley of Owosso, MI. Vicky was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mary Lou Cox and Sandra Mead and brother Keith Jorae.
Visitation and services will be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to Ovid Public Library.
