Rock Harley is the Man in Black
That’s what audiences say after seeing Harley’s tribute show to the late, great Johnny Cash.
Mid-Michigan residents can witness the transformation for themselves during Harley’s Aug. 4 appearance at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell. The 7 p.m. show is part of the weekly Concert in the Park Summer Music Series; no admission charge.
Harley may be a relative newcomer to the “tribute” music scene, but he’s been a faithful fan of the Man in Black since childhood. The Detroit native recalls arriving early at the Michigan State Fair for a show when he was seven years old, and waiting patiently for the superstar to take the stage. His effort earned him a guitar pick – from Cash, of course.
The talented vocalist and guitarist played with a group called Rock’s Gang during the 1970s. As he grew older, friends said he began to look more and more like his favorite performer. Donning a black suit and playing classic songs like Folsom Prison Blues seemed like a logical progression – and the Rock Harley Tribute to Johnny Cash was born.
The show has been well received by audiences around the state, and Harley continues to garner new fans who love hearing the Man in Black’s music as much as he enjoys playing and performing Cash tunes.
Special support for the Aug. 4 show is provided by the Clinton County 4-H & Youth Fair. The Fair runs Aug. 1-5 at the Clinton County Fairgrounds, located adjacent to the St. Johns City Park.
Concert in the Park is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the city of St. Johns with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Concerts are held each Wednesday evening at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell. The St. Johns Lions and Lioness Club staff a concession stand that offers light refreshments. All concerts are held rain or shine.
