Aug. 24 Concert in the Park
Jazz standards and popular favorites brought to life via sophisticated four-part harmony backed by one of the best rhythm trios in the state.
That’s Metro Jazz Voices.
Mark your calendar for Aug. 24 and prepare to be entertained when the Detroit-based group sings and swings at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell in the weekly Concert in the Park summer music series. There’s no admission charge for the performance that begins at 7 p.m.
Metro Jazz Voices will croon tunes from all eras – everything from standards like “Pennies from Heaven” and “Over the Rainbow,” to modern classics like “Me and Julio, Down by the Schoolyard.” Some arrangements are similar to the New York Voices, Manhatten Transfer and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, producing sounds that are comfortable and yearning with sweet harmonies.
The vocals in the “Voices” belong to Meri Slaven, Nicci Der-Stepanian, Carl Cafagna and Jeremy St. Martin. Instrumental backing comes from Scott Gwinnell on piano, Jordan Schug on bass and Mike Higgins playing drums. Cafagna also adds saxophone and flute into the mix.
Concert in the Park is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the city of St. Johns, with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition, Sparrow Clinton Memorial Hospital is being recognized at the Aug. 24 concert for its financial support of the Arts Council and the summer music series.
Concerts are held each Wednesday evening, beginning at 7 p.m., in the beautiful outdoor concert venue at the St. Johns City Park, located near Park and Morton streets. The St. Johns Lions and Lioness Club staff a concession stand each week that offers light refreshments. All concerts are held rain or shine.
