The mission of the Clinton Northern Railway is to preserve the history of the railroad and its impact on small town America at the turn of the century and beyond.
The Clinton County Arts Council and Clinton Northern Railway have been working with dedicated volunteers to restore vintage railroad cars and provide a hands on experience of the bygone era of railroading.
They are seeking funds to complete the restorations and become an attraction at the depot along the new Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail.
Three cars are currently on site at the St Johns Depot in St Johns.
The Sault Ste Marie is awaiting restoration. She is a 1902 Barney and Smith wooden sleeper car. The Marie’s interior still has much of the original wood work, upholstery and fittings.
She was capable of sleeping 44 people, originally built with ten sections divided by curtains, one private room, and a smoking room and three bathrooms. The striping and decorations are wood inlays in the mahogany veneer.
Originally she was fitted with gas lights and later updated with electric lights. Heat in the car was steam generated by the locomotive. This car was rescued from certain destruction from a side yard in Traverse City Michigan.
Your generous participation will help the Sault Ste Marie stand proud again as she becomes a part of this treasured museum..
