Tom Leonard Wins Tea Party Straw Poll

Endorsed by Citizen’s for Traditional Values
One day after Tom Leonard announced he is the only candidate in the race endorsed by Citizen’s for Traditional Values; his campaign received more welcome news as he finished first in a straw poll conducted by a Clinton County Tea Party Group. Mr. Leonard, 31, of Dewitt Twp. received 24% of the votes cast by attendees of the Clinton County TEA Party Patriots candidate forum.
“I have championed fiscal responsibility and limited government my entire adult life,” said Leonard. “While the only poll that matters is on August 7th, I am very pleased that so many people involved with this local Tea Party agree I am the best candidate to represent our values in the legislature.”
The forum was held Tuesday night in St. Johns and featured all four candidates competing for the GOP nomination in Michigan’s 93rd House District: Tom Leonard, Michael Trebesh, Kevin Kirk, and Jeremiah Napier.
The forum was positive and informative for all of those involved. Candidates primarily discussed their own biographies and all agreed on most traditional Republican political positions.
The two most striking differences between the candidates were seen in the candidate questionnaire each filled out prior to the debate. Each candidate was able to respond only with a simple yes/no to the questions.
While all agreed on the issues of a part time legislature, right-to-work, and H.B. 5768 (all “yes”); Trebesh and Napier marked “yes” to supporting medical Marijuana while Leonard and Kirk marked “no.” Only Trebesh marked “yes” to amending Michigan’s Constitution to allow for additional casinos.
The 93rd State House District is currently represented by term-limited Paul Opsommer (R-DeWitt). For more information on Leonard’s campaign for State Representative, please visit www.VoteTomLeonard.com.
