From Natural Resource Trust Fund
The Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund has recommended that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) receive $300,000 to develop eight miles of paved rail-trail through the communities of Ovid, St. Johns, Fowler, Pewamo and Muir. The project includes grading and drainage, bridges and culverts, access management, site amenities, and signage. It is anticipated that the Michigan Legislature will take action on the Trust Fund’s recommendations within the next 12 months, fully appropriated the $300,000 so that the DNR can begin construction.
These eight miles are just a portion of the 41.3 mile Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail (CIS). This is the first phase of development for the trail. Additional miles will be developed as funding becomes available. Funding for the entire project will come from a variety of sources including the Natural Resource Trust Fund, local communities, foundations and private donations.
“We are really happy that the Natural Resource Trust Fund recognized the value of this project,” said Avery Weaver of the Friends of the Fred Meijer CIS Trail. “These communities are going to benefit greatly from having a developed trail in their backyard.”
Plans are in place for the trail to be part of the Midwest Regional Rail-to-Trail network, joining up on the west end with three additional trails. This “super-trail” comprised of the CIS trail, the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Trail, Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail and the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail will soon become the fifth longest rail-trail in the United States at 125 miles. It will allow visitors to travel along three different rivers, through two state game areas, and through 16 towns and villages.
