Adrienne K. Gutzki

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, Michigan.

Adrienne was born on March 24, 1991 in Lansing, Michigan the daughter of Christopher E. and Nanette K. (Clark) Gutzki. She resided most of her life in St. Johns, Michigan.

Adrienne worked at Tony’s Restaurant in St. Louis, MI. She enjoyed outdoor activities and visiting her dad at the lake. Adrienne loved spending time with her nephew and nieces. She was an animal lover and loved bargain hunting with her mother. Adrienne will be remembered for her giving heart and willingness to help others. She also had a love of music and quoted many lyrics from her favorite songs.

She is survived by her mother Nanette and Harold Warr, of St. Johns, MI, father Christopher Gutzki and Shana Throop of Houghton Lake, MI, 2 sisters; Abi and Jeremy Heimsoth of St. Johns, MI, Audrey and Aaron Kemp of St. Johns, MI. Adrienne is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving family.

Lucille Seeley, 94, of Maple Rapids, Michigan passed away Sunday, May 29, 2016 at her home.

Funeral Services will be at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, MI, on Friday, June 3, 2016, at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Mona Kindle officiating. Burial will be held at North Star Cemetery, North Star, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Lucille was born in St. Louis, Michigan on May 25, 1922 the daughter of James and Zelma (Seeley) Palmer. She graduated from Ithaca High School. Lucille was a homemaker who enjoyed her family very much.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI, on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service at Smith Family Funeral Homes-Osgood Chapel, 104 East Cass Street, St. Johns, Michigan 48879. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. A luncheon will take place at St. Johns Columbian Hall following the burial at the cemetery.

Julie was born on June 26, 1967 in St. Johns, MI to Larry and Joyce (Simon) Karber. Julie graduated from St. Johns High School with the class of 1985 and went on to attend Michigan State University receiving a degree in communications. Julie loved spending time with animals. She was very outgoing and enjoyed talking to people. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She is survived by her mother Joyce Karber, brothers; Dean and Carol Karber, John and Kathleen Karber, fiancé Andrew Clark, and brother in law Daniel Jorae. She is also survived by 7 nieces and nephews and many loving aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father and sisters; Karen, Sharon and Janis.

Donald W. Hettinger

hettinger_donaldDonald W. Hettinger, 78 of rural Ovid died at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan on Thursday, May 26, 2016. Don was born on March 14, 1938 in Ovid the son of Vern and Eleanor (Welter) Hettinger. On June 20, 1959 he married Janice Love in Ovid, MI.
He had worked as a machinist on power brakes for Midland Ross Co. in Owosso. In 1980 he purchased and operated BJ’S Gasoline Station in Ovid until 1988. Don loved playing cards, going to the casino, the Midland Ross retirees coffee hour and being involved with his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting activities.

Don is survived by his wife Janice and children Brian (Theresa) Hettinger of Fremont, MI, Jeff (Brenda) Hettinger of Owosso, MI , and Connie (Mike) Walter of Ovid, MI; grandchildren Leah (Eric) Rasch of Ovid, Liza (Kansas) Kusnier of Elsie, Lexa Hettinger and Logan Hettinger both of Fremont, MI, Rachel (Tyler) Capony of Lansing, Daniel and Katlyn Hettinger both of Owosso, MI., Brandon, Dylan and Megan Walter all of Ovid; 6 great grandsons, and nephew Mark Pollard. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Donna Hettinger and Doris Pollard and nephew Randy Pollard.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home in St. Johns on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorials are suggested to Sparrow Hospice or Owosso Hospice.


Lila Fern Argersinger

Funeral Services will be at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, MI, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 with Chris McNeilly officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Lila was born August 22, 1916 in Gratiot County, Michigan the daughter of Charles Wesley and Isabelle (Yerks) Johnson. Lila married Hugh C. Argersinger on October 25, 1934. He passed away on November 11, 1981. She resided most of her life in St. Johns, Michigan. Lila enjoyed playing Bingo and going to the casino. She spent winters in Florida. Lila also loved her miniature schnauzers and enjoyed dancing. Lila and her husband were past members of the Ashley Sportsman’s Club.

She is survived by her son LaVerne and Jeannette Argersinger of St. Johns, MI, daughter LaVone Suski of Owosso, MI, daughter Hazel and Wendell Myers of Canton, GA, daughter Wanda and Larry Lockwood of St. Johns, MI, son Richard and Judy Argersinger of St. Johns, MI, son Melvin and Marilyn Argersinger of St. Johns, MI, daughter Sharon Pease of Hauchuca City, AZ, son Alden Argersinger of Elsie, MI, daughter Sandra and Ken Price of Blaine, TN, daughter Beverly Gee of Davie, FL. Lila is also survived by many, many grandchildren and many, many, many great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Norman Weber

weber_kennethKenneth Norman Weber, 68, of Saint Johns, MI, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, Lansing, Michigan after a short term illness.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI, on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 11:00 A.M., with Rev Fr. Michael Williams officiating. Burial will take place at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fowler, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 30, 2016 from 3-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Goerge Chapel, Fowler, MI. with Rosary prayed at 7:00 P.M.

Ken was born in St. Johns, Michigan on May 11, 1948, the son of Urban and Marie (Thelen) Weber. He graduated from Fowler High School with the class of 1967. Ken was a proud member of the undefeated 1966 Fowler Football team that was rated number 1 in the state. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed golfing, bowling, baseball and softball. He also loved his 2 cats Daisy and Huckleberry (his buddies). The MSU Spartans has lost one of their greatest fans and one of their most vocal advocates ever! He was a member of the Fowler Conversation Club and worked for Sealed Power and Dana Corporation for over 32 years.

Ken is survived by his mother Marie Weber of Fowler, MI, 3 sisters; Carol (Thomas) Huhn of Pewamo, MI, Elaine Weber of Lansing, MI, Janet McKeown of Saint Johns, MI, 4 brothers; Luke (Mary Jo) Weber of Fowler, MI, Gary Weber of Fowler, MI, Stan (Julie) Weber of Fowler, MI, Keith (Gail) Weber of Fowler, MI. Ken is also survived by uncles, aunts and many nieces and nephews, plus he had a host of friends in the Lansing area who he enjoyed very much.

Adelbert “Del” Louis Pung

Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-9 with a Vigil service at 7:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, Michigan.

Del was born on March 26, 1926 the son of Joseph and Mary (Simmer) Pung in Beal City, Michigan. On April 22, 1961 he married Caroline Stanley in Isabella County, Michigan. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in Central Europe. Del was a milk man for Valley Side Dairy Farms serving northern Clinton County and St. Johns, for many years before going to work for Oldsmobile in Lansing, Michigan for 22 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, U.A.W. Local 652, and the American Legion Post 153.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Caroline Pung, of St. Johns, MI, 4 daughters; Bonnie Konopka, of Stafford, Virginia, Julie and Mike Heuer, of St. Johns, MI, Sue and Dennis Parker of St. Johns, MI, Sandy and Kurt Brandt of Kings Mountain, NC, 13 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, 3 brothers; Donald and Diana Pung of Coldwater Lake, MI, Jack Pung of Coldwater Lake, MI, Ray Pung of Weidman, MI and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Vada Tilmann 2 brothers; Gerald and Robert Pung, and sisters in law; Blanche, Mary, Ruth, and Karlene.

Karen Jo (Anderson) Hall

hall_karenKaren Jo (Anderson) Hall, 58, of Lake Leelanau, passed away peacefully March 1, 2015 at home with family by her side. Karen was born on August 4, 1956 in St. Johns, the daughter of John Vernon and Phyllis Joan (Sousley) Anderson. On April 29, 2005 in Leland, she married Mark Randall Hall, who survives. Anyone who knew Karen knew how passionate she was about music. She instilled this passion into every aspect of her life, from raising her children to her career with Leelanau County.She used her gift to reach out and bring joy to all who heard her sing, most recently with the Grand Traverse Show Chorus. A dedicated wife and loving mother, Karen was always positive and brought happiness with her wherever she went.

In addition to her loving husband, Karen is survived by her children; John (Roxanne) Gleason, Daniel Gleason and Carrie (Noe) Mosqueda; grandchild, Coralie and a grand baby due in August; her mother, Phyllis Anderson; siblings, Phillip (Bev) Anderson; aunt, Helen (Charles) Huntington, uncle, Fred (Lee) Lewis and, uncle Howard (Dorothy) Sousley; cousins, Linda (Robert) Williams, Jeremy Lewis, Maureen (Dale) Scott, Sandy (Bill) Buyak and Scott (Rhonda) Sousley; niece, Autumn (Donald) Jurek; nephew, Paul (Hollie) Anderson; grandnephews, Noah, Oliver and Henry Jurek and Cole and Eli Anderson. She was preceded in death by her father, John and brother, Michael.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Sunday, March 8 at Suttons Bay Congregational Church. The Reverend Dr. Robin Long will officiate.

Burial will be at Lowe Cemetery in St. Johns June 5, 2016 at 12:30. Friends and family will gather at Lowe cemetery for a brief ceremony of remembrance for the lives of Karen Hall and Phyllis Anderson. A light luncheon will follow at the nearby Lowe United Methodist Church.

Phyllis Joan Anderson

anderson_phyllisPhyllis Joan Anderson, 88, of Traverse City and formerly of Suttons Bay and St. Johns, was called home on Oct. 19, 2015 at French Manor Assisted Living. Phyllis was born on May 10, 1927 in Coldwater, the daughter of Willard and Glema (Whitney) Sousley. On March 31, 1945 she married her sweetheart, John Vernon Anderson, who preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 2012.

Phyllis helped run the family farm near St. Johns and was very active in the Lowe Methodist Church and community. Later the family moved to St. Johns, where Phyllis worked as a legal secretary and eventually became the county court clerk. She was an active member of the Congregational Church in St. Johns. Phyllis and John retired to the Suttons Bay area in 1985 and were very active members of the Suttons Bay Congregational Church and volunteered assistance for Sharecare. Phyllis enjoyed music, flower gardening and sharing her bountiful love. Her beautiful smile will be missed.

Phyllis is survived by her son, Phillip (Bev) Anderson; granddaughters, Autumn (Don) Jurek and Carrie (Noe) Mosqueda; grandsons, Paul (Hollie) Anderson, John (Roxanne) Gleason and Daniel Gleason; great-grandchildren, Noah, Oliver and Henry Jurek, Cole and Eli Anderson, Karina Mosqueda and Coralee Gleason; nieces and nephews, Linda (Robert) Williams, Maureen (Dale) Scott, Debra (Rod) Brethauer, John M. (Laura) Anderson, Sandy (Bill) Buyak and Scott (Rhonda) Sousley. In addition to her husband of 67 years, Phyllis was preceded in death by her son, Michael; her daughter, Karen Hall; and nephew, Jeremy Lewis.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of French Manor Assisted Living and Hospice of Michigan for their loving care.

A memorial celebration of life service wias held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m., at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church. The Rev. Dr. Robin Carden will officiate.

Barbara Kay Arnold

Services will be held at a later date.

She was born November 17, 1946, the daughter of Collin and Cora (May) Davis. Barbara gradated from Elsie High School with the class of 1964. She worked for Fisher Body in Lansing, Michigan, and retired in 2005. She enjoyed listening to old country music and NASCAR. Barbara also liked to read.

She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly and Rocki Wicker, 2 sons, George Arnold and Mark Arnold, stepchildren, Linda and Terry Fasel, Sharon and Jim Blonshine, Nancy Arnold, 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, sister, Pam Varney, Carolynn and Jesse VanDeCreek, Rita Harper, Debbie and Charlie Brown, brothers Jim and Rene’ Davis, Robert and Pam Davis, Keith Davis, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and a sister Pat Whipple.

Anolah J. Moore

moore_anolahAnolah J. Moore of St. Johns died Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at the age of 94. She was born June 28, 1921 in Lake Odessa, MI the daughter of Edward and Hazel (Eldridge) Haney. Anolah enjoyed golfing and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She worked for the Michigan Department of Public Health retiring in 1974. On September 29, 1939 she married Charles Moore and he preceded her in death in August of 2005.

Surviving is a daughter, Margaret (Tom) Webb of St. Johns; two sons, Edward (Mary) Moore of Grand Ledge and Richard (Jane) Moore of Cadillac; eight grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and a special niece, Al Moore.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams officiating. Interment will take place 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive relatives and friends Saturday, 11:00 AM until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Mount Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 19, 2016 from 2-8 PM with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, MI. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Bernard was born in St. Johns, Michigan on June 10, 1930, the son of William and Teresa (Wacker) Fox. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. Bernard married Marie Thelen on May 29, 1956 in Fowler, MI. Bernard enjoyed hunting, fishing and walking outdoors. Spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren was very important to him. He also enjoyed playing Bingo and playing cards. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, VFW and Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife Marie H. Fox, of St. Johns, MI, son William J. and Vicky Fox, of St. Johns, MI, daughter Suzanne T. and Robert Wallace, of Lansing, MI, daughter Carol A. and Dale Jury, of St. Johns, MI, son Thomas L. and Vera Fox, of Laingsburg, MI, daughter Ann M. and Leon Parker, of St. Johns, MI, 9 grandchildren; Erica (Dennis), Nicholas (Veronica), Sarah, Breanna, Phillip, Ashleigh, Nicol, Taylor and Jessica (Kyle), 6 great-grandchildren; Ember, Ransom, Jude, Elijah, Aksa and Kelilah, and sister-in-law Mary Fox, of St. Johns, MI. Virginia Marcella Adams

adams_virginiaVirginia Marcella Adams (Moker), mother, sister, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, neighbor, and friend peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 23rd at the Sparrow Mid-Michigan Hospice House in Lansing, Michigan, at the age of 84.
Virginia was born in Menominee Township, MI to Jennie Slawinski Moker and Steve Moker. In 1953, she married her husband, David Adams, and together they had two daughters, Jenny and Mary Beth. Throughout her life, Virginia worked in many different environments, including being a librarian at the Stephenson library, test monitor at the Milwaukee Vocational School, stay-at-home mother, and Vice-President of Quincy Container.

Having spent most of her life in West Bend, Wisconsin, Virginia moved to St. Johns, Michigan in 2011 to spend more time with her daughters and grandchildren. While in St. Johns, Virginia was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She loved participating in a variety of daily devotions and spending time with her grandchildren.

Left behind to eternally treasure her memory are her daughters Jenny Adams and Mary Beth (Rene) Rosenbaum, her siblings Delores Menacher, Steve (Barbra) Moker, and Pat (Russel) Keske, her four grandchildren Jacob, Adam Rene, Alex, and Joshua, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Jennie Slawinski Moker and Steve Moker, and her husband, David Adams.

In honor of Virginia’s life, there will be a rosary prayer service at 10:30am followed by a funeral Mass at 11am on May 28th at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph Catholic School, 201 E Cass Street St. Johns MI 48879 or The Clinton County Community Services Food Pantry, 1001 S. Oakland Street, St. Johns, MI 48879.

moore_larryLarry J. Moore, 73 of rural St. Johns, MI died at Sparrow Hospital on Sunday, May 8, 2016. He was born on June 27, 1942 in St. Johns, MI the son of Theodore and Sophie (Porok) Moore. Larry was a Rodney B. Wilson High School graduate in 1960 and served in the U. S. Army as a Sergeant. On November 21, 1964 he married Mary L. Rademacher in St. Johns. Larry worked in assembly for General Motors retiring in 1994. For many years Larry farmed with his father and he enjoyed coon hunting, woodworking, gardening, and cheering on his grandchildren in their sporting activities and having time with his family. For several years Larry spent countless hours decorating for the Christmas Season for the enjoyment of all.

Larry is survived by his wife, Mary; children Tami (Alan) Nelson of St. Johns, Amy (Brian) LaBar of St. Johns, Jim (Amy) Moore of Fenton, MI and Jill (Bill) Leavitt of St. Johns; 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; brothers, Bob (Martha) Moore of Alma, Roger (Alice) Moore of St. Johns and sister, Patricia Zimmerman of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wayne Moore and grandson, Andrew Nelson.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Alice R. Shellito

shellito_aliceAlice R. Shellito of Riley Township, MI died Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the age of 100. She was born November 20, 1915 in Onaway, MI the daughter of Thomas E. and Chestina O. (Ackles) Mason. Alice was a very loving but fiercely independent person. Alice was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and a retired Licensed Practical Nurse. She married Arthur Shellito in 1966 and he preceded her in death in 1980.

Surviving is a daughter, Ann (Louis) Shellito of DeWitt; one son, Thomas (Mary) Rochon of Chester, SC; two step-children, Joyce Jorgensen of Edenton, SC and Robert Shellito of Suffolk, VA; 47 grandchildren; 71 great grand children; and 147 great great grandchildren. She was also predeceased by five siblings; six step-children and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 13, 2016 at St. Peter Lutheran Church 8990 Church Rd. St. Johns with Pastor Quentin Nuttmann officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive relatives and friends 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. Richard was born in Carson City, Michigan on May 30, 1958, the son of Robert and Pauline (Randall) Childers. Rich was a graduate of Fulton High School, a proud General Motors Lansing Grand River Plant employee and a member of Local 652. He would not hesitate to cross a parking lot to ask a Cadillac owner for feedback on their vehicle. He enjoyed the many friendships he made while working there. Rich was an enthusiastic sports spectator and had a unique relationship with the officials. A day well spent for Rich included drinking coffee while checking his favorite websites, getting the best deal possible on any purchase, mowing the lawn, grilling and drinking a beer while listening to Detroit Tigers baseball on the radio.

He is survived by his wife Judy, daughters; Katelyn, Alayna (Jacob) Shaffer, Richelle, brothers; William (Pat), Ronnie “Oak” (Kathy), Rick (Nancy), Timothy (Micci), Christopher (Judy), brothers and sisters in law; Jo (Kevin) Wendling, Jayne Schafer, Jeanne (Mike) Klaver, Jeffrey (Nicole) Spitzley, Janelle (Greg) Paksi, and Jennifer (James) Padilla. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; infant Bonnie, Pamela (Michael) Crawford, and parents-in-law; Daniel Spitzley and Carolyn Spitzley.

William J. Serviss

serviss_williamWilliam J. Serviss, 82, of DeWitt, died Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Bill was born on February 13, 1934, in St. Johns to Frederick “King” and Irma (Gage) Serviss. He grew up on the family farm outside of Ovid. He was a 1951 graduate of Ovid High School and a 1956 graduate of Michigan State University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958, servicing helicopters, radio electronics, and navigation equipment. He worked for IBM from 1958-1987 and installed and serviced the first computers in the Hannah Administration building at MSU. After retirement he enjoyed participating in the IBM retirees group, Ham Radio Club, volunteering for the Michigan Genealogical Society, weekly Tuesday lunches with friends in Ovid, and attending 50+ers and Life Group gatherings at Mount Hope Church in Lansing. He was a man who made friends wherever he went.

He married Jean Spencer on June 24, 1967, and they had two children, Christy (Michael) Sochay and Jon; she preceded him in death after 41 years of marriage. He found renewed joy after Jean’s death with his new wife, Dr. Christine Miller-Serviss, and welcomed her children (Zephyr, Charlie, and Dylan) into his heart.

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren (Kimberly, Gideon, Lindsey, Stephen, and Julianne), and brother Dale (Pat) Serviss.

A funeral service was held Monday, May 9, 2016, 12:00 pm at Mt. Hope Church, Garden Chapel, Lansing. Visitation will be Monday at the church from 10:00am until the time of the service. Linda was born on January 12, 1950 in Flint, MI the daughter of James C. and Jacqueline (Harvey) Bratton. She attended Redford High School and on February 18, 1967 she married Michael E. Buckley. Linda worked in sales at Wal-mart for several years. She loved playing bingo and having time with her grandson, Michael.

She is survived by her husband, Michael; son Michael E. of St. Johns, grandson Michael J. Buckley and sister Sharon Johnson of Flint. She was preceded in death by her parents and son Jim and sisters Pam Cripps and Vicky Cockrum and brother in law Russell Johnson.

He graduated from Ovid High School in 1948 and on June 26, 1955 he married Lois A. Parker at Greenbush United Methodist Church. Harold was a farmer and a distributor for Na-Churs Plant Food Company, He was a member of the United Church of Ovid, St. Johns-Ovid Masonic Lodge and had served on the Victor Twp. Board of Review and was on the Clinton County Planning Commission.

He is survived by his wife, Lois and 2 sons Bruce (Nancy) Bracey of Bath, MI; Brian (Kathy) Bracey of Ovid and daughter Shelley (Tim) Doyen of Manistee, MI; grandchildren, Marchell (Kevin) Duff, Elizabeth Rae, John (Liz) Bracey, Maegan (Steve) Jones, Merradith (Michael) VanVooren and Cameron Bracey and 11 great grandchildren, brother Charles (Billy) Bracey of Florida and sister Jackie (Ken) Barden of Florida.

George John Goscinski

goscinski_georgeGeorge John Goscinski, age 94 passed away Friday, April 29, 2016 at A Ewing Country Estates, DeWitt, MI. He was born August 16, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan to Frank and Sophia Goscinski. As a young boy he lived most of his childhood in the Ashley area. He married Evon Kioski March 12, 1942; they celebrated their 73rd anniversary in March 2015. George was a World War II Veteran and served in the Navy 1942-1946. While in the Navy, he and Evon made their home in Florida and Alabama. In 1946 they bought a farm on Chandler Road. He was a member of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of American Legion Post 502, past Commander and 40/8 Chef De Grae. He was employed by Fisher Body, Lansing and retired in 1976 after 30 years. George was always proud that he had a family that farmed together and thought his three girls could do anything.

George is survived by two daughters; Janice (Jeff) Martin of Middleton, Wisconsin and Georgia (Art) Ellwanger of DeWitt, five grandchildren; Joel (Mary) Martin of St. Michael, MN, Jonathan (Erika) Martin of Ashland, Wisconsin, Lewis (Nichole) Ellwanger of Olivet, Jennifer Loveland of Florida, Gretchen (Nel) Lima of Quincy, MA, great grandchildren; McKenna and Jack Martin of St. Michael, Nora Ellwanger of Olivet, sisters; Mary Pratt of Alma and Stella Karek of St. Johns, step brother Nick (Tina) Kurncz and nieces and nephews. Walter was born in St. Johns, Michigan on November 1, 1927, the son of Vern and Agnes (Skinner) Viges. Walter married Arlene Darnell on June 28, 1947; she preceded him in death on April 21, 2003. On September 11, 2004 Walter married Barbara Green Moinet. Walter was a farmer. He then went on to work for the State of Michigan’s Department of Agriculture as a fresh fruit and vegetable Inspector for 32 years. He enjoyed tractor pulls, country music and polka dancing. He was a 2013 Grand Marshall at the St. Johns Mint Festival. Walter was a member of the Baptist Church of St. Johns, MI.

Betty L. Jernstadt

Betty L. Jernstadt passed away Monday, April 25, 2016 at the age of 85. She was born October 31, 1930 in Big Rapids, MI the daughter of Lawrence and Essie (Winget) Blanchard. On November 14, 1959 she married James Jernstadt and he preceded her in death in 1986. Betty enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends and was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Betty worked several different jobs in her younger years; and retired after working many years for H&R Block.

Surviving are her children, Ace Jernstadt, Honey (Karl) Blemaster, J.T. Jernstadt, Carol Jernstadt, Martin (Angela) Jernstadt and Anna Maier; eighteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; sons-in-law, Tim Smith and Tim Maier; brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Pat Blanchard, sister, Ruth Blanchard, sisters-in-law, Eleanor Blanchard, Thelma Blanchard and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Wayne Blanchard, Dermont “Larry” Blanchard, John Blanchard, Allen Blanchard, sisters, Dorothy Kaiser, Wanda VanAlstine, Mary Blanchard, Marilyn Blanchard, Ethel Bowman and grandsons, Austin Blemaster and Ethan Smith.

Crystal Lynne Ley

ley_crystalCrystal Lynne Ley passed away Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the age of 62 after a courageous battle with ALS. She was born May 24, 1953 in St. Johns, MI the daughter of Mervin and Carrie (Winslow) Rhynard and lived in St. Johns all her life. Crystal was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a 1971 graduate of St. Johns High School, and was a retired State of Michigan employee. Crystal was a devoted daughter, wife, mom, grandma, aunt, cousin and friend. She enjoyed being with her family and friends, crafting, shopping trips, taking pictures, traveling, and celebrating special moments and achievements with everyone. On Dec. 1, 1973 she married Dennis Ley and he preceded her in death in March of 2006.

Surviving are her two daughters, Jacalyn (Jonathan) Thomas and Nicole Ley; four grandchildren, Zachary, Sydney, Brenden and Stella, special family members, Kenneth, Olivia, and Jeffrey Thomas, several nieces and nephews and many close family and friends. She was also predeceased by her parents and a brother, Corrie Rhynard.

John was born in Flint, Michigan on January 12, 1928, the son of Henry and Mary (Ackroyd) Cook. He married Amanda (Pursell) Cook on May 9, 1969 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. John graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1953. During his career he was a Board Certified General and Colorectal Surgeon. John served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. He loved spending time with family, woodworking and gardening.

He is survived by his wife Amanda Cook of Traverse City, MI, children; Stephanie and Steve Emelander of Seattle, WA, Mary and Cary Paul of Traverse City, MI, Jennifer Cook of San Diego, CA and Joseph Cook of Orange, TX. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, son, John Cook, three brothers, and one sister. Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, MI on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Tom Wilson officiating. Burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI. Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Stephen was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 12, 1944, the son of Stephen Henry and Edna (Whear) Hosking. He graduated from Henry Ford High School in Detroit, MI with the class of 1962. Jim married Sandra Ann DeCormier on March 9, 1968. Jim retired as a Police Officer from the City of Detroit in 1995. He enjoyed guns, fast cars, trains and camping. He also enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends on Facebook. Jim loved hanging out with his friends at Mega Coney Island in Grand Blanc, MI. Jim served his country as a Marine Sniper in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. He attended St. Johns Free Methodist Church and was a member of the VFW.

He is survived by his wife Sandra Hosking, daughter Carole and Samuel Vazquez, son Stephen Hosking Jr., grandchildren; James Vazquez, Samantha Vazquez, Cassandra Vazquez, Atley Hosking, Ethan Hosking, Caleb Salisbury and Brei Hosking. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Phillip W. DeMarais

demarais_phillipPhillip W. DeMarais, 79 of rural St. Johns, MI died on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Sparrow Hospital. Phillip was born on December 29, 1936 to Ira and Beatrice DeMarais. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1956 and was a veteran of the U. S. Army. On July 1, 1961 he married Sharon M. Pearson in St. Johns, MI. Phil was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DAV, VFW Honor Guard, played cards, enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching his grandchildren play sports. He was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions, U of M. football, watching westerns on TV and being with his 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He had worked at Clinton County Road Commission until he retired in 1994.

Survivors are his wife Sharon, children Annette Lintemuth, Kevin (Karen) DeMarais, and Lyn (Paul) Searles. Grandchildren, Trent (Kayla) Lintemuth, Miriah (Brandon) Lintemuth, Andrew (Elani) Searles, Haley (Keith) DeMarais, Breana (Ira) DeMarais, Jacob Searles, Shaye Lintemuth and Devin DeMarais. 2 great grandchildren, Jackson and Seth Lintemuth. Phil was survived by sister, Ardith Taylor; and his twin sister, Phyllis “Tiny” Trefil. He was preceded in death by his parents and baby brother, Arvid DeMarais.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Thursday, April 21, 2016, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Ella Long

She was an extremely warm and loving person who devoted her life to family. Ella and Ronald Long celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary during January 2016.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Ronald Long, and sons Ron (Olga), Rick (Sherry) and Randy (Dawn); nine grandchildren, one great grandson; four sisters, Wilma Stambersky, Irene Chovance, Mildred Chapko, Gladys Patrick and one brother, James Cerny. She was preceded in death by siblings John Cerny, Pauline Bocek, Charlie Cerny and Frank Cerny.

Tootie was born in Fowler, Michigan on March 14, 1937, the daughter of Edward and Eleanor (Halfman) Kramer. Tootie married Mark Louis Weber on October 25, 1955 in Fowler, MI. Tootie enjoyed playing cards and selling raffle tickets. She loved spending time with her family, especially grandchildren and great grandchildren. Tootie was the family member that always kept track of her family and community happenings. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a lifetime member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, MI.

She is survived by her husband Mark Weber of Fowler, 10 children, 29 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Dennis Weber and six brothers.

staines_rosemaryMom reunited with our Dad this morning, Friday April 15, 2016 at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. She was born February 27, 1920 to Carlton and Lois (Rose) Kimball in Lansing, MI. She was a homemaker. She married William Charles Staines, November 19, 1941 and then became a mom to a son, Douglas (Kathy) Dean Staines and a daughter, Julie (Chuck) Peters. She sold Avon and was a breast cancer survivor. She loved to hunt and fish in her day and was a friend to many. She was a member of the St. Johns Free Methodist Church for many years.

Dad passed March 7, 1991 but she is survived by her children and their spouses, grandchildren, Dawn (Staines) Parrish (Jim Smith), Shannon Parras, Joshua (Heidi) Courser and Charlie Peters. She also is survived by 10 great-grandchildren, Emily, Elizabeth, Tabitha, William, Jamie, Jasmine, Dalton, Dallas, Memphis and Jaxon and many nieces and nephews. She also had two brothers, Richard and C. L. that passed before her.

Donna M. Shane

She enjoyed bowling and was a member of a league for several years and currently was a member of the Elks Lodge. On October 28, 1950 she married Harold Shane O.D. and he preceded her in death in September 2013. Donna and Harry spent many years at their cottage on Houghton Lake where they enjoyed the company of family and many friends.

Frank was born in St. Johns, Michigan on September 16, 1938, the son of Francis Steven and Anna (Kurncz) Glowacki. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson with the class of 1957. Frank married Janet Mae Hines on August 18, 1962 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI.

Frank enjoyed playing accordion, polka dancing, snowmobiling, camping, hunting, running, motorcycle and bicycle riding. Frank retired from the United States Postal Service after 33 years of service. He volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels in St. Johns, MI. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member and an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Johns, MI. Frank served his country in the United States Army.

Frank is survived by his wife Janet Glowacki of St. Johns, MI, children; Theresa and Tim Owen of St. Johns, MI, Sue and Frank Scarchilli of Sterling Heights, MI, Tom and Jean Glowacki of Brighton, MI, grandchildren; Tyler, Emilie, Frankie, Sophie, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Alex, Joseph, Dominic, Julia, Annika, and Cole, two great grandchildren; Riley and Maddie and siblings; Stan Glowacki, Mary VanBurger, Veronica and Bill Rozen, Jane and Larry Randolph, Jim Glowacki, Bill and Diane Glowacki and brother in law Walter Suchek. Marcia M. Rush

rush_marciaMarcia M. Rush, 46, Sweetser died Sunday April 10, 2016 at home, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Throughout her illness, Marcia never lost her fierce determination, and was inspirational to all who knew her.

She was born on October 16, 1969 in St. Johns Michigan to Dave and Judy (McAfee) Huhn. She was a 1987 graduate of St. Johns High School. She graduated from Western Michigan University in 1992 with a B.S. in Human Resource Management. On November 29, 1997 she married Todd D. Rush and moved to Grant County, Indiana. She went to work at Auto Owners Insurance, of Sweetser. Marcia decided that her next career move would be to that of Stay at Home Mother. She provided daycare services for other children in her home and became a successful Pampered Chef Salesperson.

Marcia was a member of the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, where, among other volunteer activities, she served as Secretary of the Administrative Board, attended her Sunday School Class, and was extremely active in the United Methodist Women. In fact, she would like everyone to know that the annual bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, October 29, 2016 which is only 199 days away. Marcia spent many years as a leader of the Jalapa Indian 4-H club, of which both her children are members.

She is survived by her husband Todd and their children McClane and Dale, all of Sweetser; parents Dave and Judy (McAfee) Huhn, St. Johns, MI; sister Loretta (Larry) Smith, Powder Springs, GA; father and mother-in-Law Stan and Peggy (Fawcett) Rush, Greentown, IN; and sister-in-law, Jody Rush, Westfield, IN.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday April 16, 2016 in the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, 2015 N 300 W, Marion, IN, with the Rev. Rob Barton Officiating. Joan was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and quilting and especially enjoyed knitting hats for premature babies in the NICU at Sparrow Hospital. Joan married Eugene Rennells in August of 1950 and he preceded her in death in 1984.

Surviving is one daughter, Marilyn (Jim) Buggs of Lowell; three sons, Steve (Debbie) of Belleville, Dale (Rose) and Alan (Shirley) all of St. Johns; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Lois (Glenn) Whitford and Dorothy (Mert) Scharnweber all of St. Johns. She was also predeceased by a brother, Dick Henning.

James was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, a retired General Motors employee with 34 years of service and a member of UAW Local #652. On June 29, 1985 he married Hedy Fields and she survives him.

Also surviving is one son, Robert (Bob) Rose of Holt; three step-daughters, Evelyn (Rick) Bush of Elsie, Monica (Kent) Hoskins of Ovid and Brenda (Scott) Young of St. Johns; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. John retired from Sealed Power Corporation. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and loved the outdoors. John was a diehard University of Michigan fan and followed the Detroit Tigers. In retirement, John and Helen enjoyed traveling the world. John was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo, MI. He was also a member of VFW Post #3733 and a veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife Helen Fedewa of Fowler, MI, daughter Joyce and Tod Macauley of Lansing, MI, son Thomas Fedewa of Baltimore, MD, and daughter Ellen and Larry Campbell of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Adair Macauley, Patrick, Erin and Lauren Fedewa, and Craig and Kyle Campbell. Terry Jay Scranton

scranton_terryTerry Jay Scranton age 73 of Rogers City passed away at home on April 5, 2016. He was born March 21, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio to Harry and Mildred (Hemingway) Scranton. Terry graduated from St. Johns High School in 1961. On July 15, 1967 he married Linda Dettloff at St. John Lutheran Church in Rogers City. Terry retired from General Motors as a Tinsmith in 2004. He and Linda moved to Rogers City in 2005. Mr. Scranton was an active member at Peace Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time in his garage restoring old cars.

Mr. Scranton is survived by his wife, Linda; 4 children, Heidi Scranton of St. Johns, Heather Scranton of St. Johns, Kara Scranton of Grand Rapids and Michael (Marcie) Scranton of Dewitt; 3 grandchildren, Hannah Scranton, Avery Scranton and Ella Scranton; 1 brother, Jon Scranton of St. Johns; 2 brothers-in-law, Chuck (Joan) Dettloff of Rogers City and Tom (Lynn) Dettloff of Florida. His is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mildred Scranton.

Memorial visitation will take place at the Beck Funeral Home on Monday, April 11 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers City on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. through time of his memorial service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor J. Dereck Riddle officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church or Hospice of Michigan in memory of Terry Scranton.


Eva Elizabeth Thompson

thompson_evaEva Elizabeth Thompson, age 94, of St. Johns, MI and formerly of Lake George and Ovid, MI passed away Friday, April 1, 2016 at Sparrow Health Systems, Lansing, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes- Osgood Chapel, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Ellen Zienert officiating. Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 6-8 P.M. at the Funeral Home.

Eva was born in Kenton, Ohio on January 13, 1922, the daughter of Omer and Dorothy (Smith) Roby. Eva married Lyle Thompson on September 15, 1956 and he passed away on June 12, 1977. Eva was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. She also liked to watch old movies. Eva retired from General Motors as a punch press operator.

She is survived by many, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and her sister Ann White of St. Johns, MI. Eva was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Perry Lee Haudenschield, 2 daughters Barbara Ann Pease and Thelma Kay Haudenschield and a grandson Michael John Pease.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel St. Johns, Michigan.


Joan C. Fraker

fraker_joanJoan C. Fraker, age 71, of Bannister, MI passed away Friday, April 1, 2016 at Sparrow Health Systems, Lansing, MI.

There will be no services at this time.

Joan was born in Charleston, West Virginia on May 24, 1944, the daughter of Merle and Myrtle (Church) Patrick. Joan married Orin Fraker on October 9, 1959. Orin passed away on August 17, 2003. She resided most of her life in the Ovid Elsie area.

Joan was previously employed by Uncle John’s Cider Mill as a baker and loved to bake. She enjoyed sewing and collecting antique dishes. Spending time with her grandchildren brought her much joy.

She is survived by her daughter Debbie and Donald Lukas of Elsie, MI, daughter Lisa Sosebee of Elsie, MI, son Thomas and Michele Fraker of Charlotte, MI, daughter Brenda Ackels of Elsie, MI, son Robert and Amy Fraker of Bannister, MI, 15 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 3 brothers. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother and a sister.

Bertha was born in Lansing, Michigan on March 11, 1932, the daughter of August and Olga (Nickols) Witt. She married Arthur Aldrich on June 24, 1950 in Lansing, MI. Bertha enjoyed gardening, flowers, knitting, crocheting, reading and crosswords. She liked to ride horses and toured the United States with her husband on their motorcycle. She loved spending time with her family and pets.

She is survived by her husband Arthur Aldrich of Elsie, MI, children; Bruce and Daria Aldrich of St. Johns, MI, Julie and Jim Hammill of Crystal Falls, MI, Glenn and Cindy Aldrich of Elsie, MI, 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, sisters; Ella and Alfred Nitschke of Sparta, MI and Audrey Haynes of DeWitt, MI. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
