Albert Flak

Albert Flak, age 91, of St. Johns, MI, went home to be with his Heavenly Father and was reunited with the love of his life, on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church, St. Johns, MI, on Monday, May 22, 2017 at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Quentin Nuttmann officiating. Burial will take place at St. Peter Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2017 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI.

Albert was born in Middleton, MI on January 31, 1926, the son of John and Mary (Misovic) Flak. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson with the class of 1944. He married Neva L. Marten on June 25, 1947 in St. Johns, MI; they celebrated 63 years of marriage together. Neva passed away on October 6, 2010.

Albert retired from Motor Wheel in 1976. Albert and Neva spent many years as sextons at the Riley Township Cemeteries. They also were janitors and performed the lawn maintenance at the St. Peter Lutheran Church. Albert enjoyed his summers spent at family cottages in Evart, MI and Harrison, MI. He loved gardening, being outdoors, time spent in the Upper Peninsula, and tinkering with his lawn mowers and vehicles. He enjoyed listening to his old country music and eating sweets. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his children; Charlene Kennedy of St. Johns, MI, Phyllis and Vincent Moran of Lansing, MI, Rita and Thomas Hollis of St. Johns, MI, Joanne and Ronnie Montgomery of Lansing, MI, grandchildren; Joshua and Shannon Kennedy, Matthew Kennedy, David Kennedy, Michelle Moran, Renee and James Terpening, Leslie Rue, Lindsay Rue, Ashlie Hollis, great grandchildren; Ashley, Chandler, Clair, Ethan, Evan, Danielle, Logan, Kaden, Payton, Anthony, Amare and Darian, brother Paul and Betty Flak and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Neva, son in law Dennis Kennedy, grandsons; Charles Moran and Derek Hollis, sister Anne and Frank Adamski, brother John and Dorothy Flak, and sister in law Virginia and Leonard Jastram.

Wesley C. Davis

Wesley C. Davis, 92 of rural St. Johns, MI passed away on Monday, May 15, 2017 at Sparrow Hospital. Wesley was born on January 9, 1925 in Palo, MI the son of David and Pearl (Fish) Davis. Wes served his country with the United States Navy during World War II. He worked at General Motors as a spot welder for over 36 years and on February 14, 1948 he married Doris M. Helfer in Ithaca, MI. Wes loved gardening and had lots of beautiful flowers around his home.

Survivors are his wife, Doris and daughters, Carol (LeRoy) Dunsmore of St. Johns, MI Linda (Terry) Adams of Wyoming, MI and grandchildren, Jeff Rozen, Tisha (Mike) May, Terri Paseka, Jesse (Jennifer) Dunsmore and Chad (Connie) Adams; 10 great grandchildren; a brother Basil Davis of Maple Rapids and sister Alice Sherwood of Wyoming. He was preceded in death by a sister.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. with Elder Earl Barks officiating. Burial will follow at Duplain Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Rochester Colony School.


Eugene William Simon

Eugene William Simon, age 78 of Houghton Lake Heights, MI, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, MI.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI. A Vigil and Rosary will be prayed at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Funeral Home.

Eugene was born in Fowler, Michigan on November 20, 1938, the son of Gilbert H. and Marie (Sontag) Simon. Eugene married Lynda Heinlen on June 23, 1962. Lynda passed away on October 1, 2013. Eugene resided most of his life in St. Johns.

Eugene served as the City Treasurer for St. Johns for over 30 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially bragging about his 8 kids and 23 grandchildren. Eugene also enjoyed playing cards, watching sports and going to Florida with his wife. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns.

Eugene is survived by his eight children, Brent and Carrie Simon of McKinney, TX, Curtis Simon of Folley Beach, SC, Tamie and Dennis Parks of Maple Rapids, MI, Jamie and Rob Benbow of Fortville, IN, Kari and Rick Pieters, of St. Johns, MI, Heidi Martens of St. Johns, MI, Chad Simon of St. Johns, MI, Chip and Jaclyn Simon of Suwanee, GA; grandchildren Taryn, Makenzie, Brooke, Shelby, Tessa, Cody, Presley, Cassidy, Colten, Masen, Mariya, Carson, Hunter, Logan, Lexi, Jayci, Gracyn, Kenadi, Sophie, Brady, Lukas and Landry; a great-grandson Simon; brothers Larry, Jim, Ted, Denny and Neil also sisters Mary Ann, Theresa, Diane and Susie. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson Brandon, brother Kenny and sisters Janet and Arlene.

Janet Mae Glowacki

Janet Mae Glowacki, age 76 of St. Johns, MI, passed away peacefully Friday, May 12, 2017 at her son’s home with her children present.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI, on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 15, 2017 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI. A Vigil and Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home.

Janet was born in Ovid, MI on July 31, 1940, the daughter of Louis and Cora (Schmidt) Hines. She was a graduate of Ovid Elsie High School and resided most of her life in St. Johns. Janet married Francis Glowacki on August 18, 1962 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI. He passed away on April 12, 2016.

Janet enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She and her husband Frank enjoyed snowmobiling and going on motorcycle trips across the country. Camping with her family at Lake Michigan Recreation area was one of her favorite things. Janet also enjoyed polka dancing and listening to polka music. Janet volunteered her time for Meals on Wheels in St. Johns. She worked for many years as a Letter Carrier for St. Johns Post Office. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns.

Janet is survived by her daughter Theresa and Tim Owen of St. Johns, MI; son Tom and Jean Glowacki of Brighton, MI; son-in-law Frank Scarchilli of Sterling Heights, MI; 13 grandchildren: Tyler, Emilie, Frankie, Sophie, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Alex, Joseph, Dominic, Julia, Annika, and Cole; 2 great-grandchildren: Riley and Maddie; sister Helen Traugott of Denver, CO; brother Richard Hines of Steamboat Springs, CO. She is also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son in infancy Steven Francis, daughter Sue Scarchilli, brother Walter Hines, sister Loretta Hartman, brother Edward Hines, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Carl L. Chatfield Sr.

Carl L. Chatfield Sr. died Friday, May 12, 2017 at the age of 81. He was born July 29, 1935 in Coldwater, MI the son of Albert “Red” and Mary (Latta) Chatfield. Carl and his wife Kay have lived in St. Johns for only a short period of time coming from Saranac, MI. He is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns and formerly was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Saranac. Carl was a member of the Knights of Columbus and loved bowling, hunting, fishing, traveling, coin collecting and playing cards. He was an entrepreneur for most of his working career and at one time was the owner of the St. Johns Dog N Suds. Carl retired from the State of Michigan, Department of Corrections. On July 30, 1955 he married Kay Andrews and she survives him.

Also surviving are his children, Theresa (Edward) Dobson of Coldwater, MI, Carl Jr. (Kristal) of Lewisburg, TN, Diane (Bill) Glowacki of St. Johns, Kelly (Harold) LaLonde of Traverse City, Sharon (David) Zebell of Battle Creek, Dawn (Barry) Woodhams of Niceville, FL; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one sister, Dorothy Ernst of Adrian; one brother, DeWayne of Coldwater. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Kenneth.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Monday, May 15, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 109 Linden, St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams as Celebrant. The family will receive relatives and friends 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. James R. Ritter

James R. Ritter, 84 of Chelsea, MI formerly of St. Johns passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at his home. Jim was born on January 22, 1933 in St. Johns the son of Arthur and Lillian (Jackway) Ritter. He was a veteran serving in the US Army serving in Korea and on July 15, 1951 he married Rose Wilkes in St. Johns. Jim worked at Saylor-Beal for several years. He was a member of the American Legion, loved fishing and going to the casino.

Surviving are his wife Rose, children, Randy (Connie) Ritter of Chelsea, MI, Michael (Devona) Ritter of Ovid, David (Genny) Ritter of St. Johns and Larry Ritter of Missouri. 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Russell.

Kimberly A. Wagner

Kimberly A. Wagner, 35 of Charlotte, MI formerly of St. Johns passed away on May 3, 2017. Kim was born on June 3, 1981 in Carson City, MI the daughter of John H. and Debra L. (Brown) Wagner. She was a 2000 graduate of St. Johns High School and was employed at General Motors Corp in Lansing as a truck driver. Kim loved golfing, going to the casino and spending time with her nephew Carter and going to Silver Lake Sand Dunes.

Survivors are her father, John (Patty) Wagner of Ovid, mother, Debra (Donald) Hansen of St. Johns, sister, Kari (Steve Brooks) of Muskegon, nephew Carter Brooks, grandmother, Joan Wagner of Holt, MI, step-siblings, Emily Hicks of St. Johns, John Hicks of Mason, Nathan Hicks of Mason, Calvin Hansen on Interlochen, MI, David Hansen of Hemlock, MI, Jessica Hethorn of DeWitt and Troy Looney of St. Johns.

A celebration of Kim’s life will be held Sunday, May 7, 2017 12 noon at The American Legion Post, 110 E. Walker St., St. Johns, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to Brighton Center for Recovery.

Judith L. McCue

Judith L. McCue, 74 of Ovid, MI passed away at Sparrow Hospital on Thursday, May 4, 2017. She was born on June 18, 1942 in St. Johns, MI the daughter of Joseph and Margarie (Weir) Martin. An Ovid High School graduate she worked as a Supervisor for the State Of Michigan, Social Services Dept. Judith loved making quilts, genealogy, collecting, cross stitch and traveling.

Survivors are her children, Denise (Denny) McCue of Florida, Robert McCue of Ovid and Kelly McDermott of Florida; grandchildren, Abby McCue and Keegan McDermott; sisters, Rose Mary (Ed) Larkin of NM and Marlene (Leon) Stewart of FL and brother Tim (Carrie) Martin of TX; many special nieces and nephews; special friends Donna Slone and Marilyn Hartsuff. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Joanne Martin and brothers James and Thomas Martin.

A special celebration of Judith’s life will be held towards the end of June. Arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home.


Milan E. Plesko

Milan E. Plesko, 81 went to be with the Lord on May 5, 2017 at his home in Perrinton. Milan was born on March 12, 1936 in Ashley, MI the son of Steve and Katherine (Dudash) Plesko. Milan served in the US Navy and worked at Saginaw Steering for 34 years. On December 19, 1959 he married Beverly A. Harris in St. Johns. He loved the out of doors especially hunting, camping fishing, gardening, his plants and flowers. Milan loved traveling out west and to Alaska and he loved his family and was very giving of his time to help all his children with their projects.

Milan is survived by his wife, Beverly, sons Mark Plesko of Greenville, Pat Plesko of Ashley, and Paul of Perrinton; daughter, Lori Saylor of St. Johns and Annette (Brian) O’Dell of Ashley; 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, his dogs Mandy, Tiffany, Jo-Jo and his rabbit Bunny; brothers Stanley , Ed and John. He was preceded in death by brothers Mike and Tony and sisters Helen Mason and Irene Kunik, also son in law, Rick Saylor and sister-in-law Carol Feldpausch.

John Wesley Cecil

John Wesley Cecil, age 85 of St Johns, MI, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday May 2, 2017.

A Memorial Service will be held June 3rd, 2017 in the Detroit area.

John was born May 23, 1931 in Highland Park, MI, the son of Lee and Alice (Stover) Cecil. John was married to Rosemary Cascaden, November 6, 1982 in CO. John and Rosemary resided in Creede, CO; Prescott, AZ and St Johns, MI. John served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. John worked most of his career at Ford Motor Company, retiring in 1982. John was one of the modelers on the original Ford Mustang. After retiring from Ford, John worked at C&C Automotive Specialties until 2005.

John was a kind and loving individual. He was strong-willed and compassionate at the same time. Thoughtful, prayerful and generous to the people he loved. John loved the outdoors and was a volunteer Boy Scout leader for many years. Truly a talented and skilled individual, he loved hand-crafted projects and was especially skilled at woodworking. His personal faith was important to him, a committed church member and a strong supporter of the work of the Salvation Army.

He is survived by his wife Rosemary Cecil of St. Johns, MI; daughter Beth Cecil-Hanna of Detroit, MI; son Brad and Suely Cecil of Ft. Worth, TX; son Brian Cecil of Wheatridge, CO; daughter Laura and David Detloff of Naples, FL; step-daughter Gail and Bob Brown of St. Johns, MI; step-daughter Judy Mann of St. Johns, MI; step-son Chuck and Nancy Cascaden of Commerce Twp, MI; 20 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. John was preceded in death by his parents; step-son Richard Cascaden; brother Bob Cecil; son Scott Cecil and Carol Cecil.

Patricia Lee Vallin

Patricia Lee “Peachy” Vallin, age 73, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

At Peachy’s request a cremation has taken place and there will be no services. All donations in her memory may be made to a Food Bank of your choice.

Patricia was born in Lake City, MI on October 7, 1943 the daughter of Hubert and Minnie Martha (Jackson) Becker. She graduated from Fulton Schools. On January 13, 1962 Peachy married Aurelio “Chuckles” L. Vallin in Maple Rapids, MI. They were married 30 years before his death in 1992. Peachy had a passion for rescuing and nurturing pets and farm animals of all kinds. She enjoyed knitting, gardening (especially her roses) and reading. Peachy and Chuckles built from the ground up the family farm which became her home for the rest of her life. There they raised their son Aurelio Jr. “Dude”. They had a passion for raising vegetables to sell or give to anyone who had need with the help of many other young men who also called her “Mom” on the “Mexican Ranch”.

Patricia is survived by her son Aurelio (Brandy) Vallin Jr. of St. Johns, MI, grandchildren: Trisha (Ken) Morrison, Keegon Stowell, Gage Stowell, and Bree Stowell; her sister Marilyn Miller, and many nieces and nephews. Peachy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Aurelio.

James Michael Glowacki

James Michael Glowacki age 65, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Hospice House of Mid Michigan, Lansing, MI surrounded by his family.

Private Family Services will be held. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery St. Johns, MI.

James was born in St. Johns, Michigan on March 2, 1952, the son of Frank and Anna (Kurncz) Glowacki. He resided most of his life in St. Johns.

Jim is survived by his siblings Stanley Glowacki of Ithaca, MI, Mary VanBurger, Veronica and Bill Rozen, Jane and Larry Randolph, Bill and Diane Glowacki all of St. Johns, MI. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret Suchek, brother-in-law Gale VanBurger, sister-in-law Kay Glowacki and brother Frank Glowacki, Jr.

Shirley N. Powers

Shirley N. Powers, age 65 of Dewitt, MI, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017, at her home.

Cremation has taken place and no services will be held.

Shirley was born in Trenton, New Jersey on September 15, 1951, the daughter of Marion Johnson. She married Darwin Powers on November 19, 1993 in St. Johns, MI. Shirley was a CNA and worked 17 years at Hazel Findlay and 9 years at Ovid Healthcare Center. She enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time at her home. Spending time with her grandchildren brought her great joy.

She is survived by her husband Darwin Powers, children; Todd and Stacy Powers, Trent and Ashley Powers, Matt and Anna Hughes and 8 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and daughter Jennifer Hughes.

Olivia Kay Borodychuk

Olivia Kay Borodychuk, age 8, passed away peacefully on Friday April 28, 2017 in her home in Dewitt, MI. Olivia was born on October 10, 2008 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing Michigan to parents Chad and Lisa (Jennings) Borodychuk. Through her short time here on earth and without even speaking a word, Olivia brought an entire community together and positively impacted many lives across the nation. In her battle against Alexander Disease, the rarest form of Leukodystrophy; Olivia exemplified what it truly means to handle pain and struggle with an extreme amount of courage and grace. Olivia wholeheartedly inspired the birth of Olivia Kay Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization created with a mission to improve the quality of life for children with severe multiple impairments.

Olivia enjoyed so many things in life. She loved her little brother Oliver very much, sharing her tablet and stuffed animals with him and especially the bonding time they had together. She enjoyed music, shower time, being read to, having her nails painted and her hair brushed. Some special memories in her life include visiting the Columbus Zoo and petting all sorts of exotic animals, meeting singer/songwriter James Taylor, meeting country music artist Tim McGraw, and especially her wonderful Make a Wish trip to meet the real Elmo in New York City.

Olivia is survived by her parents Chad and Lisa(Jennings) Borodychuk; her beloved brother, Oliver; her grandmother Connie Jennings of Dewitt; her uncle Eric and aunt Kelley Borodychuk of Mt. Pleasant and her uncle Pete (Tonia) Jennings of Barryton; her cousins Kyle, Logan, Alexis, and Morgan; her Godparents Brad and Valorie LeFevre; and so many extended family, friends, nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals that have walked with her on her journey. Olivia is proceeded in death by her grandparents Michael and Karen Borodychuk and Jim Jennings.

For those touched by Olivia’s life, we invite you to join us for a “Celebration of Life” service officiated by Rev. Dr. Rodney Kalajainen at Redeemer United Methodist Church in Dewitt, MI; on Wednesday May 3, 2017 at 12noon. Visitation will be held at Redeemer United Methodist Church just prior to the service from 10am–12pm. Immediately following the service, there will be a committal service at City of Dewitt cemetery. A balloon release honoring Olivia’s beautiful life will take place immediately following that committal service.

Iva B. Kees

Iva B. Kees, affectionately known by many as “Iva Belle”, passed away peacefully April 27, 2017 at the age of 93. Iva was born July 2, 1923 in St. Louis, Michigan. She graduated Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns in 1941 and remained a lifelong resident of the St. Johns area. Iva met and married her husband Berlin in 1942 while he was in Lansing training for his Navy assignment during World War II. It was love at first sight as they married in two weeks and remained together 52 years. Iva enjoyed cooking for family and friends, playing cards and especially engaging in lengthy conversation where the subject increasingly turned to her ever-growing number of great grandchildren. She enjoyed helping others and for many years volunteered at the Social Service Clothing Center, the Clinton County Senior Center and The Clinton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by children Carol (Dick) Ellis, Ellen Moon and son Dwight (Brenda); grandchildren Cammi (Mike) Robinson, Ryan (Lynley) Kees, Natasha (Tim) Roberts, Rochelle (Jim) Cain and Bridgett (Ryan) Phelps; great grandchildren Megan and Jordan Stoddard, Emory and Ella Roberts, Ryley and Gracyn Kees, Jimmy, Willow and Meadow Cain and Khyra, Elysse and Avynn Phelps; step great grandchildren Logan and Haley Robinson and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Iva was predeceased by her parents, Lionel and Minnie Kirk Weaver, husband Berlin, infant grandson Todd, sisters Erma, Irene, Hanna and brother Earl.

Ronald J. Kingsbury

Ronald J. Kingsbury died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at the age of 58. He was born September 10, 1958 in St. Johns, MI the son of Richard and Mary (Whitlock) Kingsbury. Ron was a graduate of St. Johns High School, Class of 1976 and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spending time with family, friends and his “adopted sons”. Ron loved duck hunting on Stevens Lake in Northern Michigan, was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Sleepy Hollow Conservation Club and the N.R.A. He was mason and owner/ operator of Kingsbury Masonry. On June 30, 1984 he married Stephanie Smith and she survives him.

Also surviving is a son, Connor; his mother, Mary Kingsbury; two brothers, Mark and Louella Kingsbury and Dave and Heather Kingsbury, all of St. Johns; brothers and sisters-in-law, Scott and Ramona Smith and Kevin and Chrissi Smith of St. Johns, Eric and Sharon Smith of Saginaw and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard and parents-in-law, Tank (Alan J.) and Gert Smith.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Saturday, April 29, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 109 Linden, St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams as Celebrant. Genevieve was born in Westphalia, MI on July 30, 1936, the daughter of Julius and Elizabeth (Cook) Simon. Genevieve married Joseph Pung on August 28, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia, MI. Genny enjoyed gardening, playing cards, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed bus trips to the casino and taking vacations with her family. Genny liked to watch sports and enjoyed supporting Fowler sports. She took great pride in her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, MI.

Virginia Foerch

Virginia Foerch, age 92, formerly of Fowler, MI, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017, at The Laurels of Fulton, Gratiot County, MI.

Virginia was born in Avondale, North Carolina on May 21, 1924, the daughter of Charlie Tillman and Vernie (Lane) Green. She married Floyd Foerch on April 3, 1950 in South Carolina. Floyd passed away on January 30, 1992. Virginia enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fowler, MI.

She is survived by her daughter Sandra and Steven Thelen, 4 grandchildren; Sherry and Rob Hamilton, Chad and Ashley Thelen, Michelle and Kyle Schmitt, Stephanie and Jason Luark, 13 great grandchildren; Joshua, Jacob, Noah, Benjamin, and Nathan Hamilton, Marguerite, Joanna, and Kenneth Thelen, Preston, Olivia, and Lewis Miller, Gavin and Conner Luark, sisters; Mary Cherka, Rosie and Tony Schafer and brother Bruce Green. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

She owned and operated Bright Ideas by Becky, and she put her art on various products that she sold in her business. Becky was a member of Duplain Church of Christ St. Johns.

She is survived by her mother Eydie Schroeder of St. Johns, MI, sister Renee’ and Lon Gibson of Dewitt, MI, 3 brothers; Eric and Carol Schroeder of Lansing, MI, Bert and Hilleke Botter of the Netherlands, Chuck and Debbie Pelton of Mounds View, MN, many nieces and nephews, special friend Terry Simison and many others with whom she enjoyed special relationships. She was predeceased by her father Dennis and brother Tony.

Richard Anthony Jandernoa, age 83 of Fowler, MI, passed away Thursday April 20, 2017 at Mother Teresa House, Lansing, MI.

Dick was born in Pewamo, MI on December 7, 1933, the son of Anthony “Doc” and Elizabeth (Beauchampe) Jandernoa. He attended Pewamo schools and lived in the Fowler area most of his life. Dick married Dorothy Pung on June 26, 1954 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler. Together they celebrated 62 years of marriage and raised seven children. He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Dick was a water well repairman and retired from Federal Mogul, St. Johns after 28 years of service. He enjoyed card playing, watching all sports, and anything involving friends and family.

Dick is survived by his wife Dorothy and seven children; Dan (Kathy) Jandernoa, Linda (Glenn) Thelen, Larry (Carol) Jandernoa, Tony (Patti) Jandernoa, Tim (Arlene) Jandernoa, Glenn (Julie) Jandernoa, and Mary Kay (Brian) Goerge,18 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, extended family; Donald Pung, Helen Pung, and Lois Jandernoa; and many nieces and nephews. Ronald J. Karek, 52 passed away on April 19, 2017 in Lansing, MI. Ron was born on December 26, 1964 in Lansing, MI the son of Frank and Kathleen (Kellogg) Karek.

Survivors are his sister, Karen (Paul) Brown of Haslett, MI, grandmother, Stella Karek of St. Johns, nephew Ryan Brown and niece Kathryn Brown; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Katrina and his parents.

Willard C. Studer

Willard C. Studer, 86 of St. Johns passed away on April 19, 2017 at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. Willard was born on May 9, 1930 in Mason, MI the son of Ralph R. and Martha M. (McCulloh) Studer. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1949 and was a veteran of the US Navy. On April 16, 1955 he married Helen I. Latson in St. Johns. Willard worked at Kroger Co in St. Johns as a meat cutter and after 27 years he retired. He was a member of St. Johns Baptist Church, VFW post 4113, and St. Johns American Legion Post. Willard enjoyed spending time at the cottage, fishing, gardening, grilling, bowling, shuffle boarding, and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, children Brian (Merry) Studer of Holly, MI, Wayne Studer of St. Johns and Susan Studer of DeWitt; grandchildren, Nathan (Erin) Studer, Jacob Studer, Megan (Ben) Meyering, Ben (Grace) Studer, Brent (Kayla) Studer, Alexsis Studer, nine great grandchildren and sister Marquetta Gearhart of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Larry Dale Hackett

Larry Dale Hackett of Walled Lake, formerly of St. Johns, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. He was born on February 2, 1939 to the late Jack and H. Ruth (Burhans) Hackett in Lansing, MI. He graduated from St. Johns High School before proudly serving in the United States Navy. He worked for Ford Motor Company for over thirty years. He married Loretta Hardin on October 26, 1963, and after his retirement they bought a travel trailer and took off traveling. They loved traveling and wintered in Texas for the last 18 years. Larry had a way with words that was always fun to be around. He will be truly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 53 years, Loretta (Hardin) Hackett, daughters, Jennifer Hackett, Christine (Dan) Thomas; son, Steve (Jeni) Hackett; grandchildren, Dean, Doug, Samantha, and Ally; brother, Tim Hackett, two sisters Mona Smith and Gloria Palmiter, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother and sister, John and Alice Hackett.

A funeral liturgy will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Delta Chapel. Terri Lee Stoddard

Terri Lee Stoddard of St. Johns died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the age of 67. She was born October 17, 1949 in Durand, MI the daughter of Gerald “Andy” and Cora (Watson) Price. Terri was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, Class of 1967 and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She loved working in her yard, bird watching, spending time with her family and especially enjoyed winter and the colder temperatures that it brought. Terri retired with 35 years of service from the State of Michigan, Department of Corrections. She also worked for several years, after her retirement, for Clinton County Medical Center. On October 25, 1969 she married Michael Stoddard and he survives her.

Also surviving are three daughters, Staci (Christopher) Simon of Freeland, Lori (Brian) Green of West Chester, OH, Kelli (Donald) Havens of St. Johns; five grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Simon, Bryce Stoddard, Nora and Zane Green; parents, Andy and Cora Price of St. Johns; two sisters, Karen (Dennis) Gillespie, Janet Taylor (Russ Pope) all of St. Johns; brother-in-law, Dave Griffin of East Jordan, MI; mother-in-law, Dorothy Stoddard of St. Johns; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marlene (Rod) Walling of St. Johns, Rich (Barb) Stoddard of Mount Dora, FL, Cathy (Bob) Elliott of DeWitt and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Connie Griffin.

Joseph Raymond Moriarty

Joseph Raymond Moriarty “Joe” “Mr. Meijer Man” died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at the age of 51. He was born January 15, 1966 in St. Johns, MI the son of Earl and Agnes (May) Moriarty. Joe was a graduate of St. Johns High School, Class of 1984 and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. One of his hobbies was to collect scrap metal and deliver it to be recycled and he was an avid University of Michigan fan. Most recently Joe was working as a cashier at the DeWitt Meijer Store. On June 24, 1989 he married Shari Monroe and she survives him.

Also surviving are two children, Biancha of South Carolina and Brandon of St. Johns; one sister, Mary (Tom) Kerby of Maple Rapids; mother-in-law, Kathy Campbell of Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law George Campbell.

Joe chose to be a donor to the Anatomical Donations Program at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Elsie married Gerald Irrer in 1935 in Angola, Indiana. He preceded her in death in 1977. Elsie loved her flowers (especially her roses), playing bridge, square dancing, and playing marbles which she NEVER let you win. She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns.

She is survived by her sons: Gary (Jeanne) Irrer of DeWitt, and Bill (Sharon) Irrer of St. Johns, 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 6 great, great grandchildren with one more on the way. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald, and sister Edith Cottonham.

Robert Joseph “Coachese” Hine, age 60, of St. Johns, Michigan, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017, at his home.

Robert was born in Carson City, Michigan on April 12, 1957, the son of Raymond Gerald and Bernita Marie (Smith) Hine. He graduated from St. Johns High School with the class of 1977. Robert retired from General Motors after 30 years of service. He also worked as a finish carpenter for Fedewa Builders. He enjoyed landscaping, woodworking and collecting antiques. He was an animal lover and loved his pets. He was known for always wearing his bandana. Robert was very proud of his Native American heritage.

Robert is survived by 2 brothers: Daniel John (Sherry) Hine of Owosso and Gerald William (Tammy) Hine of DeWitt; sister Jean Marie Hine of St. Johns, 4 nieces: Crystal (Shayne) Sadler, Janet (Fritz) Carlson, Deanna Jones, and Tammy (Nathan) Hangsbarger; nephews: Gregory Bishop, and Raymond (Ashley) Hine; and 11 great nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents.

Alice Martha Bullard

Alice Martha Bullard, 102 of St. Johns passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Grace Haven Assisted Living in St. Johns. Alice was born on February 22, 1915 the daughter of Raymond and Ivah (Jury) in St. Johns, MI. Alice was employed at the Court House Register of Deeds in St. Johns until she met the love of her life, Paul J. O. Bullard. They were joined in marriage on October 26, 1938. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage until his passing in May, 1990. She was a lifelong member of The Order of Eastern Star in St. Johns. She also enjoyed going to the family cottage at Higgins Lake and seeing her friends.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Marilyn (Joe) Armbrustmacher of DeWitt and Barbara Bullard of St. Johns; two grand-daughters, Michelle (Dr. Stephen) Chapman and Cindy (Michael Nunn), great grandchildren, Stephanie and Daniel Chapman and Matthew and Eric Nunn and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J.O. Bullard, parents and siblings Esther Crosby, Myrtle Findlay, Ruth Ferguson, Sam Greene and Donald Greene.

Gerald (Jerry) Atkinson

The 85-year adventure of Jerry Atkinson came to a close on April 10, 2017. Soon after his passing social media lit up with photos and memories of him. Words like funny, smiling, hardworking and generous were used to describe him. He was a mentor and teacher to many. Jerry was one-of-a-kind and lived life his way.

Jerry loved the outdoors and hunting. His favorite passion was working on houses. He was a junk picker and house flipper long before it was cool. He was happiest with a hammer in one hand and paint brush in the other.
Jerry loved family get-togethers, he hardly missed a one. His annual corn roasts were family favorites and fodder for many memories.

He loved his family; wife Gert (Teachworth) Atkinson, sons Randy (Terri) Atkinson, Rick Atkinson, Rod (Beth) Atkinson and daughter Velvet (Brian) Atkinson-Fuller; his siblings, Doug (Carol) Atkinson, Connie Welton, Ron (Kay) Atkinson, Betty Knight (deceased) and Dale Atkinson (deceased). Jerry loved his grandkids Aaron, Amber, Cris, Jeremy, Rachel, and bonus grandson Myles, great grandkids, nieces and nephews. They have many Gramps and Uncle Jerry stories to share.

Jerry was a 1951 graduate of St. Johns High School. He was a veteran of the US Naval Reserves, retired from the State of Michigan, and a self- employed painting contractor. He was a generous giver to many charities and a Boy Scout Troop leader.

Ted R. Lewis, Sr.

Ted R. Lewis Sr., age 77, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor, St. Johns, MI. Ted was born in St. Johns, MI on July 10, 1939 the son of Glenn O. and Eleanor I. (Little) Lewis. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960 aboard the USS Toledo. Ted married Nancy Dalrymple on May 4, 1963 in St. Johns, MI and resided most of his life in St. Johns.

Ted retired from Instructional Media Center at M.S.U after 31 years. He also owned and operated Lewis Communications. He performed forensic analysis and was a member of Central Michigan Law Enforcement Agency. Ted provided sound systems for the community during 4H, Mint Festival, Santa Parade, Veterans Parade and Memorial Day ceremonies. He also served on the board of directors for Clinton Area Care Center.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Lewis of St. Johns, MI, 2 sons; Troy Lewis of Hendeson, NV, Ted Lewis II (Tina) of St. Johns, MI, 2 daughters; Darcy and Alain Ebert of St. Johns, MI, Jennifer Heslip, of St. Johns, MI; 9 grandchildren, sister Sharon and Ed St. John of Bradenton, FL, and many nieces and nephews. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Stephanie Lewis and sister Judy Hannah.

Esdeane Laurence Osgood

Esdeane Laurence Osgood died Wednesday, April 11, 2017 at the age of 91. She was born February 1, 1926 in Lansing, MI the daughter of Dean and Agnes Esther (Houseman) Laurence. Esdeane was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and a member of the Altar Guild for St. John Episcopal Church in Bethesda, MD. She was a life member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution (DAR) and Past Regent of the Bottony Cross Chapter DAR in Kensington MD. Esdeane was a docent and tour guide for the DAR Museum in Washington D.C. On December 18, 1948 she married Conley E. Osgood in St. Johns, MI, and he preceded her in death in 2010.

Surviving are two sons, Dean (Gail) Osgood and Christopher E. “Ned” Osgood all of MD; two grandchildren, First Lieutenant Christopher T. Osgood and Nichole Osgood; one sister, Lynne Gregory of St. Johns and many cousins and good friends.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Lowe Cemetery near St. Johns, MI with Rev. Dr. Carol Spangenberg, Assistant Pastor at St. David Episcopal Church, Lansing, MI officiating. Memorials may be made to a charity of donor’s choice. Mary Lucinda Bernath

Mary Lucinda Bernath, age 89, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Monday, April 10, 2017 peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Mary survived cancer 27 years ago. She battled dementia the last 5 years.

Mary was born in St. Johns, MI on August 17, 1927 the daughter of Ross and Anna (Vorhee) Cornell. She returned to school in her 50’s and received her High School Diploma from Ovid-Elsie same year as her youngest son in 1980. Mary married Frank J. Bernath on January 17, 1948 at St. Cyril’s Church in Bannister, MI. They resided in Elsie for 69 years, just recently moving to St. Johns.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband, spending time at their cabin at Houghton Lake always stopping in Mt. Pleasant to share her wealth with the Chippewa Indian Tribe, playing Bingo, baking for her family and friends, and sewing many beautiful quilts; giving many away and donating many more to charities for fund raisers. She also enjoyed going to and having garage sales. She was employed by Universal Electric for a few years, but the majority of her working life she was the Head Cook at E.E. Knight Elementary School for 30 plus years. Taking government issued food and turning it into delicious meals for generations of children. Her cookies and baked goods were always requested by the children and teachers. But the true joy of her life was being surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 69 years Frank Bernath of St. Johns, MI, 5 sons; Jerry and Helen Bernath of Portland, MI, Terry and Phylis Bernath of Lansing, MI, Larry and Paula Bernath of St. Johns, MI, Garry and Sid Bernath of Elsie, MI, Barry and Martha Bernath of St. Johns, MI, daughter Sherry Allen of Speedway, IN, 12 grandchildren; Katrina Schneider, Eric Bernath, Scott Bernath, Kelly Paxton, Kristi Blogref, Ryan Bernath, Abbey Bernath, Brandon Bernath, Michael Bernath, Matthew Bernath, Ashley Szado and Rachel Bernath, 10 great-grandchildren; Brett, Allan, and Zachary Schneider, Owen and Chase Paxton, Franklin, Fitzgerald, and Eloise Bernath, Kendall Peterson, Logan Witt and her 11th great-grandchild Caleb Blogref due to be born in July. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Tammy Witt, 3 sisters and 4 brothers.

The family would like to give their sincere appreciation and thanks to her caregivers from Gentle Hands Loving Hearts Janie Smith, Julie Shepard and Sandy Davies. Also many skilled nurses from Great Lakes Hospice for the care they provided for Mary and the comforting words from Father Ed and Father Mike.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, Bannister, MI, at 12:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 with Rev. Fr. Bill Gruden officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes-Osgood Chapel, St. Johns. A Wake Service will be held on Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. and a Rosary will be prayed at 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Angela Rose Andrews

Angela Rose Andrews died Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the age of 53 after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was born January 15, 1964 in Lansing, MI the daughter of James and Jacquelyn (Childres Colosky) Devericks. Angela was a banquet server and waitress for 28 years most recently working at JJ Ruby’s Fine Food and Spirits Restaurant in Ithaca and Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant. On September 19, 1992 she married Marlin Andrews and he survives her.

Also surviving are her children, Eric (Jerrae) Arrington of Perrinton, Thomas Arrington and Matthew Arrington both of Middleton, Kodie (Betsy) Hall of Grand Rapids, Heather (Jason) Werlinger of Clio; ten grandchildren with one coming any day; mother Jacquelyn of Middleton; sisters, Jamilee (Joshua) Leslie of Maple Rapids and Dorothy Montalvo (Chris Mullens) of Lansing, also her lifelong best friend Julie (Roddie) Miller of Maple Rapids. She was preceded in death by her father James.

Agatha was born in Westphalia, MI on July 8, 1924 the daughter of William A. and Frances (Halfman) Rademacher. Agatha married James Feldpausch on January 25, 1943; he passed away on October 4, 2013. Agatha loved crocheting, playing all games, telling jokes, and she had a green thumb, with a special love for roses. She especially loved cooking dinners for her family. Agatha and James enjoyed visiting many Michigan nursing homes where they would lead residents in singing along with their band. Agatha was a farmer’s wife and assisted her husband in the farming work. She and Jim took many fishing trips to Drummond Island. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very deeply. She was a lifetime member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, MI.

Marc P. Rehmann, 59, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2017, in Gaylord’s Otsego Hospital.

He was a loving brother to Lambert and Sally Rehmann of Denver, CO; Chuck and Marla Signs-Rehmann of Petoskey, Eric and Ann Rehmann of St Louis, MO, Scott and Liz Rehmann of Phoenix and Michelle and Howard Ryan of Haslett, MI.

Marc was a longtime resident of Northern Michigan, a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Petoskey, MI and enjoyed all outdoor sports. Marc enjoyed the simple things in life and always had a positive outlook. Marc would never want people to mourn his death, but celebrate his life. Brother and Uncle, he will be sorely missed and never forgotten.

Albert A. Turkovich

Albert A. Turkovich passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the age of 88. He was born September 28, 1928 in Shinnston, West Virginia the son of Michael and Mary (Riska) Turkovich. Albert served his country as a career soldier in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star and was a member of an expert rifle team for many years. Albert served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam and retired from the Army with the rank of Major. He was a member of VFW Post # 5890 and American Legion Post # 118 both in Rio Rancho, NM. He loved fishing, hunting, photography, good food, and a bargain! Albert also enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe to visit relatives and friends.

Surviving are three sons, Albert Jr., Donald and Mark; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; three sisters and one brother. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Local funeral services will be held 12:00 noon Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Albert will then return to Shinnston, West Virginia for services and burial there. Local Military Honors will be provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. The family suggests memorials may be made to the donor’s local VFW.


Julia Pearl Thornton

Julia Pearl Thornton, age 96, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor, St. Johns, MI. Julia was born in St. Johns, MI on January 4, 1921, the daughter of Isaac and Daisy (McKnight) Neelands. She graduated from St. Johns High School and attended Eastern Michigan University. On February 2, 1946 she married Walter Thornton in St. Johns, MI. Walter passed away on June 10, 1958. Julia was an organist for a number of churches in the area, and taught piano lessons at her home for many years. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church. She enjoyed activities at the Clinton County Senior Center.

She is survived by her daughter Barbara and William Bashore of St. Johns, MI, son Arnold and Sharon Thornton of Dewitt, MI, daughter Marjorie and William Eiseler of St. Johns, MI, daughter Janet Taylor of Lansing, MI, 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and sister in law Mary Libey of Mesa, AZ. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Walter, and brother Lewis Neelands.

Raymond resided most of his life in Fowler. Ray enjoyed to hunt, fish and golf. He retired from Quality Dairy Company and worked in construction all of his life.

He passed away on March 25, 1994. She resided most of her life in Fowler. Spending time with her family brought her great joy and she loved to travel with her family. Geraldine was a wonderful baker and cook. She also spent many years helping to cook for Senior Citizen Dinners. She enjoyed putting puzzles together with her lady friends and playing Bingo. Geraldine was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. In her younger years she loved to draw and pencil sketch. Geraldine used to work in the St. Johns Egg Station for quite sometime.

Elmyra Jane “Ellie” Lavia, 78, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Monday, March 27, 2017, at Sparrow Health Systems, Lansing, MI.

Elmyra was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on September 4, 1938, the daughter of Glen L. and Vera E. (Thornton) Kayser. Elmyra enjoyed bowling, crocheting, watching wildlife and gardening. She worked at Walmart in St. Johns as a Department Manager for many years.

She is survived by son Bernard and Tina Lavia of Muskegon, MI, daughter Dianne and John Pontius of Ithaca, MI, grandchildren; Cody (Angela) Lavia, Johnathan (Sabrina) Pontius, Bryant (Leah) Pontius, Brandon and Krista Nevills, Jacklyn Rodriguez, River Swift, great grandchildren; Julian, Isabella, Brady, Nicholas, brother Edward and Janet Kayser of MI, step brother Robert and Patricia Antekeier of AZ. Bruce Warren Baker

Bruce Warren Baker, 63, unexpectedly went home to be with his Lord on March 27, 2017. Bruce loved spending time at home in Dewitt and up north at Higgins Lake. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, boating and spending time hanging out with family and his many special friends. Bruce was a great helper and liked to share his skills. He attended First Baptist Church of St. Johns. Most of all, Bruce loved his wonderful grandchildren, considering them to be the loves of his life. Papa Bruce created great memories for all. He was a generous man in life, and continues this generosity after his passing by sharing the gift of life as an organ donor.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 43 years, Dawn Graham Baker; children, Todd (Catherine), Karie (Joshua), Justin (Katrina); grandchildren, Antonio, Alora, Avery, Rosa, James, Mario, Nadia, Rocco, Addison; sister, Karen and her family in California; and extended family, the Grahams of DeWitt, the Hamiltons of Laingsburg, and the Bakers of Lansing. Bruce was preceded in death by parents, Gordon and Eileen Baker.

A Memorial Service will take place at 6:00 pm March 30, 2017 at First Baptist Church of St. Johns, 512 S. Whittemore Street, St. Johns, MI 48879 with Pastor Tim Knaus officiating. The family will receive visitors two hours prior to the service at the church.

Clare E. Boughton died suddenly at his winter home in Dunnellon, FL on Monday, March 20, 2017 at the age of 74. He was born June 3, 1942 in Lansing, MI the son of Clare O. and Thelma A. (Dassance) Boughton. Clare attended First Baptist Church in St. Johns, enjoyed traveling, camping and woodworking. He coached girls fast pitch softball for several years, was an avid sports fan and loved fishing. He was an agricultural products salesman for most of his working career. On January 26, 1961 he married Diane Smith and she survives him.

Also surviving are two daughters, Lori Fonger of Kalamazoo and Tammy Hite of DeWitt; six grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan, Rachael, Benjamin, Jason and Olivia; one great granddaughter, Kira; two sisters, Donna (Marvin) O’Dell of St. Johns and Dolores Boughton of Holt. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister LaVonne.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, March 27, 2017 at First Baptist Church 512 S. US 27 St. Johns with Pastor Tim Knaus officiating. Interment will take place 2:30 PM at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive relatives and friends 4:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday, March 26 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns and one hour prior the funeral at the church. Robert Matthew Ward

Robert Matthew Ward, 63, of St. Johns, MI, passed peacefully at his home on March 19, 2017 with family by his side. Calling himself “naturally lucky”, Rob enjoyed his life in spite of many arduous years of polycystic kidney disease that began in his mid-30’s, including 20 years of dialysis. He outlived his life expectancy by several years, while maintaining a positive outlook on life throughout his long-term illness. He was kind and friendly to everyone and everything and was admired for his tenacity to endure the adversities of his health.

Born April 9, 1953, Rob was raised in Saginaw Township by Les and Joanne Ward and graduated from Douglas MacArthur High School in 1971. While gifted in math and science, music was always his driving force. He was interested in all kinds of music and musicians and played keyboard for bands of all genres throughout his adulthood. He really enjoyed his last band, The Upstage Crew Blues Band from Grand Rapids, and was working toward a music degree until his illness prevented him from continuing.

Rob was an avid reader and enjoyed conversing on pertinent subjects. He was also a sports car fan and an avid Marvel and DC comic fan. An interest that began in childhood with comic books continued throughout his life, as he watched every TV series and action movie he could at IMAX or 3D theaters.

Rob was a partner of the Listening Room in Saginaw in its early years. He then founded Home Systems Group in Lansing where he sold and installed high-end stereo equipment and home entertainment systems. His last employment was at Peckham in Lansing as a passport call center operator until 2013.

After two previous marriages, Rob married Wanda Loyce Schmidt of Lansing in May, 2004. They enjoyed traveling, gardening, raising chickens, spending time with their grandchildren and living a quiet life in rural St. Johns with their beloved chocolate Lab, Lily, and cat, Taffy. Wanda preceded him in death in October, 2014.

Rob is survived by his mother, Joanne Ward, of Saginaw; sister Jane Ward, of Mt. Pleasant; son Talon Ward, of Orlando, FL; brother-in-law Randy (Laura) Schmidt, of St. Johns; father-in-law Earl (Lynn) Schmidt of Ionia; step-son Larry (Ivy) Schmidt and their children Calvin and Arbor of Williamston; and other members of the Schmidt family.

Following cremation, a celebration of his life will take place at his home when weather permits. Expressions of sympathy may be emailed to WandRWard@hotmail.com. Those wishing to offer a commemorative memorial may consider donating to an animal shelter.

Janet E. Reed

Janet E. Reed, 73 of St. Johns died on March 19, 2017 at Hazel Findlay County Manor. She was born on November 30, 1943 the daughter of William S. and LaVonne (Riechert) Reed. Janet graduated from Big Rapids High School and became a registered nurse working in the nurseries of Owosso Memorial Hospital and Sparrow Hospital.

Janet is survived by son David and daughter Amy Reed both of Florida; grandchildren, Mercedes, Armani and Izabella as well as a brother Dan Reed of Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald.

Harry W. “Pete” Smith

Harry W. “Pete” Smith, age 86 of Owosso passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Masonic Pathways of Alma.

A memorial service will be held 6:00 pm Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at First Church of Christ with Pastor Steve Swem officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Great Lakes National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 5pm until the time of service.

Pete was born May 2, 1930 in St. Johns, the son of Stafford and Mary (Jolly) Smith, attended the First Church of Christ and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of the ARC, Shriner’s Club, Masons, American Legion and Eagles. Pete enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf and dancing. Most of all Pete loved to bring a smile to everyone.

He married Annabelle Current on November 14, 1952 in Angola, Indiana; she predeceased him on October 29, 1976.

Harry retired from General Motors as a tool and die maker.

Harry is survived by his children Landa (Jay) Wagar, Dawn Smith, Peggy MacFadden (Lori) and Wayne Smith; grandchildren Annabell (DJ) Marcum, Lena (Ricardo) Palacios, Jonathan (Brenda) Wagar, Peter (Veta) Wagar, Mary (Patrick) Compton and Susannah (Matthew) Henry; great-grandchildren Olie, Eli, Malachi, Dylan and Carter; many other loving family and friends.

Craig A. Porubsky, 42 of New Hudson, MI formerly of St. Johns passed away at Providence Hospital in Novi, MI from a brain aneurysm. Craig was born on May 20, 1974 in Owosso, MI the son of Arthur C. and Mary K. (Wright) Porubsky. He graduated from St. Johns High School in 1992 and received his BA degree from Central Michigan University. Craig worked as a paralegal in Novi, MI. He loved working out, music, food, talking politics and socializing.

He is survived by his parents of St. Johns, fiancé, Sheree Smullen, siblings, Marty (Terri) Porubsky of Fl, Rick Porubsky of Laingsburg, Angie (Darrell) Fahey of Mattawan MI, Kelly (Greg) Houlihan of Kentucky, Jennifer Porubsky of Dearborn, MI. 4 nephews and 3 nieces. R. Bruce Bancroft

Richard B. Bancroft of Delta Township passed away March 14, 2017. R. Bruce was born May 28, 1929 in St. Johns, Michigan to the late Murdo and Nina (Ward) Bancroft. He graduated from Maple Rapids High School Class of 1947 and worked as an outside salesman in mobile radio sales for General Electric RCA. R. Bruce was a member of the Lansing Elks Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He is survived by his wife of over thirty-two years, Nancy J. (Stanley); children, Marcia Grace (Jan) Hodges and Julie Nicole (Barry) Dyer; step-children, Kimm M. (Gail) Zamarron, Moe B. She resided most of her life in DeWitt Township. Spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was always very important to her. Louise’s faith was always a big part of her life. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church, Dewitt, MI.

Daniel P. Schafer

Daniel P. Schafer, born September 17, 1930 in St. Johns, MI, the son of the late Ernest and Cornelia (Hauck) Schafer, died Monday, March 13, 2017 in Lansing, MI. Dan graduated from Michigan State University and received his Master’s degree from the University of Detroit. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Dan retired from U.S. Graphite of Saginaw, continued consulting for several years after retirement. He was an avid gardener, loved the outdoors, but most importantly, he loved his grandchildren and supporting their activities.

Surviving are his 4 children, Kathleen Willis, Ann Lennox, Ted (Ann) Schafer and Mary Angst; 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; sister, Ellen (Frank) Silvernail; brother-in-law, Carl Walter. Dan was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan W. (Rademacher); son, Craig Michael; sister, Anita Walter and son-in-law, Don Willis.

Rose Groom, 86 of Ovid, MI passed away on March 12, 2017 at Memorial Hospital in Owosso after a brief illness. Rose was born on August 13, 1930 in Owosso the daughter of Floyd and Eva (Hildebrant) Gale. She lived in Owosso and Ovid her entire life and she enjoyed volunteering at Memorial Healthcare for several years, putting jig saw puzzles together, gardening and had a sincere love for her family. Rose was a member of Duplain Church of Christ. On December 28, 1947 she married Donald H. Groom in Owosso.

Rose is survived by her husband, Don, daughters, Irene Hunt, Shirley Miller and Marilyn (Randy) Rasmussen; grandchildren Barry (Michelle) Hunt, Bruce (Heather) Hunt, Marie (Kyle) Spiess, Mindy (Jeremy) Klein, Trevor (Chelsea) Rasmussen, Nicholas (Andrea) Rasmussen several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; brothers Robert, Cecil (friend Ann Miller) Gale. Sally was born in Niagara Falls, NY on May 31, 1935 the daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Clark) Muraca. Sally enjoyed playing Bingo, and she was an avid reader of Mystery Novels. She also enjoyed playing Pogo on her computer. She was a lifetime member of the Sheridan VFW Post 5065, where she held many offices. One of her favorite things at the post was packing up care packages for service members overseas. Spending time with her family was important to her.

Mary Margaret Staley

Mary Margaret Staley, age 93 died on March 9, 2017 in St. Johns, MI. Mary Margaret was born on May 18, 1923 in Bridgeport, Illinois the daughter of Ivan and Emma (Gilliatt) Cooper and she attended and graduated from Bridgeport Illinois High School in May, 1940. Mary worked at a telephone company for a year and then came to Lansing, Michigan in 1942. She worked at a war plant during World War II as a secretary and was a volunteer at the USO in Lansing during that time. After the war she worked at the Michigan Department of Agriculture for 14 years. Mary was married to Russell Cole in Lansing and they had a son Jon Michael. She later married Robert Staley in Lansing on August 8, 1959. He preceded her in death in May, 1980. After marrying Robert they moved to Elsie with her son. She and her husband bowled in bowling leagues for many years. After his death she worked at PACE, Inc in Owosso , MI for 14 years. On July 4, 2004 she was baptized at Duplain Church of Christ, St. Johns, MI by minister Dan Cameron becoming a member at that time.

Mary is survived by her only son, Jon Michael Cole of Ovid, MI; granddaughter, Jessica (Alex) Bedoway of Howell and Shannon (Abdiel) Rocha of Mexico; grandson Joshua (Kirsten) Cole of Elsie and their mother, Susan Cole of St. Johns, MI; eight great granddaughters, Vivian and Evalyn Cole, Kailin and Taylor Bedoway and Shan, Annabel, Alexa and Eva Rocha. Two great grandsons, Justin Cole and Cole Bedoway, also several nieces, nephews and cousins in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana. She was predeceased by her husband, parents, two brothers, two sisters, brother-in-laws, sister-in-law, father-in-law and mother-in-law. She loved her family and friends. She also loved animals, especially cats.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. with Chuck Emmert officiating. Burial will follow at Payne Cemetery, Middleton, MI.
