Herbert E. Houghten

Herbert E. Houghten, age 97 of St. Johns, MI, passed away, Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at Ashley Care Center, Ashley, MI.

A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 2:00 P.M., with Pastor Ellen Zienert officiating. Visitation will take place from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery at a later date.

Herbert was born in Troy, MI on June 6, 1919, the son of Lester and Blanche (Weaver) Houghten. Herbert and his father owned and operated the Houghten Lumber Co. in St. Johns until 1963. He went on to be a real estate broker and built residential homes. Herbert was a World War II Veteran serving with the 10th Armored Division in Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and three Battle Stars, as well as the Good Conduct Medal, the European Victory Medal, and the Occupation Medal. He was a member of the American Legion, Past Commander of the St. Johns VFW, a life member of the St. Johns Masonic Lodge and a member of the St. Johns United Methodist church.

He is survived by his son Paul Houghten, brothers; Glen Houghten of Shelby Township, MI, and Elmer and Nancy Houghten of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, and daughter Patricia.

Robert Charles Albers

Robert Charles “Bob” Albers, age 90, of St. Johns, MI passed away Monday, March 6, 2017 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor, St. Johns, MI.

According to Bob’s wishes a cremation has taken place and a family gathering will be held at a later date.

Bob was born in Essexville, MI on August 14, 1926 and was later adopted by John and Freida (Siebert) Albers. He attended St. Johns Public Schools. He worked as an electrician, assembly line worker at Fisher Body, and later retired from the gaming industry in Las Vegas. He attended St. Johns Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Bob enjoyed fishing.

Bob is survived by his children: Diane Lee of Lansing, MI, MaryEllen (Keith) Lapp of Key West, FL, Arthur Keith Albers of Alaska, Shawn (Donald) Minarik of St. Johns, MI, Mark (Kelly) Albers of St. Johns, MI; grandchildren: Ashley Minarik, Samantha (Mike) Richardson, and Sarah Albers; great grandchildren: TJ, and Callie; and a special friend Kevin Parker. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Roberta Albers.

Juanita B. (Nita) Terpening

Juanita B. (Nita) Terpening of St. Johns, age 82 departed earth on March 6, 2017 to live in heaven with her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born in Owosso, MI to Russell and Jennie Terpening and moved to St. Johns in 1948. She graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School and attended Lansing Business University and Lansing Community College. Nita worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Human Resources. Nita was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in St. Johns, and over the years served in many areas of the church. At the time of her death, she was still active in the Ladies Guild.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews: Karen, Brenda, Cynthia and Michael (Tammy) Terpening of St. Johns, Tonya (Craig) Phinney of Ovid and Ramon Mathew (Jeri) Terpening of Ovid; Tracie (Chris) Darling of Elsie; Russell (Rita) and Steaven Terpening of Melbourne, FL. She is also survived by 18 great nieces and nephews, and 13 great great nieces and nephews as well as many close cousins in various parts of the country. She was pre-deceased by her mother and stepfather, Jennie and Harl Steavens, father, Russell Terpening, brothers Ramon Edward Terpening, and Russell Dean Terpening, sister in law, Bobbie Joe Terpening, nephew, David Terpening, and great nephew Russell Dean Terpening III.

Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11:00 A.M, with Dr. Bryan Salminen and Pastor George Brinley officiating. Burial will follow at South Bingham Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Thursday, March 9, 2017, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Ladies Guild at the church.


Loretta A. Koenigsknecht Rademacher

Loretta A. (Koenigsknecht) Rademacher age 99 of Fowler, MI, passed away Monday, March 6, 2017 at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital, Lansing, MI.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, MI on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 10:30 A.M., with Rev. Fr. Dennis Howard officiating and Rev. Fr. William Koenigsknecht concelebrating. Burial will take place at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fowler, MI. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, from 1-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Goerge Chapel, Fowler, MI. Rosary Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. and 5:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

Loretta was born in Westphalia, MI on December 4, 1917, the daughter of William and Margaret (Sontag) Hengesbach. Loretta married Arnold Koenigsknecht on January 1, 1941 and he preceded her in death on August 23, 1950. Loretta married her second husband Arthur Rademacher on January 16, 1954 and he preceded her in death on March 6, 1965. She was a homemaker and a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers Association.

She is survived by two sons; James W. and Cherie Koenigsknecht of Mulliken, MI, Lawrence L. Koenigsknecht of Fowler, MI, five daughters; Mary and Charles McCausey of Fowler, MI, Rita and Michael Chamberlain of Portland, MI, Agnes and Gene Goerge of Fowler, MI, Geralyn and Keith Fedewa of Westphalia, MI, Jane Rademacher, of Lansing, MI, 18 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and three great grandchildren on the way. She is also survived by special friends Brenda Johnson and Dale Simon. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by three infant children; Loretta, Robert, and Dorothy Ann Koenigsknecht, and five brothers; Lawrence, Sylvester, Urban, Anthony, Rev. Fr. Julius Hengesbach and one sister Antoinette Koenigsknecht.

Bruce Orin Grubaugh

Bruce Orin Grubaugh, age 75 of St. Johns, MI, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017 at his home.

A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 1:00 P.M., with Pastor Karen Messmer officiating. Burial will take place at Union Home Cemetery. St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Bruce was born in St. Johns, MI on July 30, 1941 the son of Loren Ervin and Clara Virginia (Tabor) Grubaugh. He was a Fulton High School graduate and resided most of his life in St. Johns. Bruce married Jean Grubaugh on March 11, 1961 in Maple Rapids. He retired from Lear Corporation in Elsie after working 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and video taping deer with family. Bruce was an avid reader with talking books. He also enjoyed shooting pool, playing shuffle board and playing cards; he made his own Braille cards.

He is survived by his wife Jean Grubaugh, 2 sons; Byron Grubaugh and Todd Grubaugh, 2 granddaughters; Macy and Katie Grubaugh of St. Johns, MI, brother Phillip and Nancy Grubaugh, brother Ronald and Mary Grubaugh, brother Brent and Kay Grubaugh, sister Loreen McAllister, brother Lee and Lynette Grubaugh, brother Mark Grubaugh, and brother Lynn Grubaugh. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Everett McAllister.

Earl L. Andrus

Earl L. Andrus died Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the age of 97. He was born September 5, 1919 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Carlton and Lena (Earl) Andrus. Earl was an Army veteran of WWII and member of American Legion Post #153 in St. Johns. He attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in St. Johns, was a former Surge milking equipment dealer and maintenance worker for Ed’s Refinery Co. Earl had a love for horses. Owning, riding and caring for horses were a big part of Earl’s life. Earl married Sylvia Dennison in 1941 and she preceded him in death in 1960. In April of 1965 he married Dorothy Besko and she survives him.

Also surviving are three sons, Rodney (Annette), Darrell (Carol) and Carlton (Connie) all of St. Johns; two step-daughters, Rita Lynn (Jennings) West of Ovid and Teala (John) Moon of St. Johns; fifteen grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, Sylvia, Earl was preceded in death by a step-son, Bill Besko and two grandsons, Craig and Gregory Andrus.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns with Pastor Kathy Leydorf-Keck officiating. Memorials may be made to Briggs Public Library 108 E. Railroad St. Johns, MI 48879. The family was assisted with these arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.


Jason Lloyd Wieber

Jason Lloyd “Wieb” Wieber, 37, of Big Rapids, a 16-year veteran of the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office, passed away Wednesday at his home surrounded by his loving family. The son of Bob and Starr Wieber of St. Johns, he was born on June 16, 1979 in Lansing. He was a 1997 graduate of St. Johns High School where he played football and wrestled. He later graduated from the Lansing Community College Police Academy.

“Wieb” became a Mecosta County road deputy on March 20 of 2001. In addition to those duties, he was an essential part of the department’s Dive and Rescue Team. A gentle giant of a man, “Wieb” believed in living life to the fullest. He truly loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, playing cards and spending time with family members. He especially enjoyed his weekends at Higgins Lake. “Wieb” was a loyal friend to many in the law enforcement community and would help them when in need. He was accomplished in carpentry, masonry and several other construction skills. He also served as co-owner of The Phenix Bar and Restaurant in Edmore. “Wieb” married Bethany Ginnever on Feb. 12 of 2014 and the couple had a son, Charlie, on July 20, 2015.

He is survived by his parents, wife and son; brother Justin of St. Johns; sister Kimberly of Hudsonville; mother and father-in-law Doug and Julie Ginnever; sister-in-law Nicole (Joe) Marshall of Big Rapids; brother-in-law Chris (Pheobe) Ginnever of Stanwood; grandparents Dick and Marianne Harrington of DeWitt and Richard (Bump) Nelson of Haslett; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and extended family members of his brother and sisters in blue. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Lloyd and Charline Wieber and Jeri Nelson.

Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Trinity Fellowship Evangelical Free Church in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (today) March 2nd and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3rd, both days, at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family will also greet friends one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Pine Plains Cemetery in Big Rapids. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Charlie Wieber Education Fund at the West Michigan Credit Union.


Gilbert O. Bovan

Gilbert O. Bovan, 88 passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Welcome Home Assisted Living in Elsie. Gib was born on February 16, 1929 in Flint, MI the son of Francis and Lucille (Myers) Bovan. He graduated from Mather high school in Munising, MI and received his Bachelor’s degree at Central Michigan University and while there was defensive back for the winning football team 1950-1951, and then his Master’s in Education from the University of Michigan. Gib served in the US Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division and then the Medical Battalion from 1947 to 1950. On August 13, 1955 he married Beverly J. Wyckoff in Roscommon, MI. Gib came to Ovid High School in 1954 and taught government and coached 3 sports. Later he and Rosemary Valko started the Ovid Service Agency for insurance and real estate sales. Gib was a member of Ovid Lions Club and Ovid Masonic Lodge and loved playing golf.

Survivors are his wife, Beverly, daughter Jennifer (Gregg) Martin of Ovid, sons Jeffrey of Lansing and Dr. James Bovan of Munster, IN; grandchildren, Daniel (Jennifer) Martin, Sarah (Seth Holder) Martin and Lukas Martin all of Ovid great grandchildren, Dominic and Ariana Martin sister Beverly Strand of Munising and brother James (Patsy) Bovan of Flushing, MI. He was preceded by sister Betty Lou and brother-in-law, Charles Arnold.

As requested by Gib, there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to Ovid Lions Club.

Arthur Joe Bancroft

Arthur Joe Bancroft, age 73, of Ithaca, MI passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Mid-Michigan Medical Center, Alma, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, on Saturday, February 25 2017 at 1:00 P.M. with Mr. Chuck Emmert officiating. Burial will take place at Duplain Township Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service.

Arthur was born in St. Johns, MI on March 11, 1943, the son of R.G. Webster and Marian Louise (Brooks) Bancroft. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, MI. On June 22, 1985 he married Victoria Brown in Perrinton, MI. Joe was a craftsman at Oldsmobile in Lansing, retiring October 1, 1997 after 33 years of service. He enjoyed going to Jamborees and traveling to Florida, and he also enjoyed watching The Three Stooges.

He is survived by his wife, 3 sons; Joe and Denise Bancroft, Jerry and Michelle Bancroft, Timothy and Bonnie Bancroft, 2 daughters; Virginia Ruedger, Ida and Jim Hall, many grandchildren, stepchildren; Dale McGill, Sherry McGill and Laurie and John Alegria, sister Iris and Roger Smith and many nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, stepson Donald McGill, 2 grandsons; Jason Ruedger and Jeremy Bancroft, and granddaughter Jerra Mia Hall

Carl D. Teelander

Carl D. Teelander, 73 died unexpectedly at Sparrow Hospital on Sunday, February 19, 2017. Carl was born on December 28, 1943 in Detroit, MI the son of Forrest and Evelyn (Marks) Teelander. He graduated from Elsie High School in 1962 and was a truck driver for Grand Rapids Transport. On February 15, 1964 he married Sharon K. Seibert in St. Johns, MI. Carl loved trucking and stopping at casinos across the U.S. He especially loved being with his family and the grandchildren.

Survivors are his wife Sharon, sons Carl (Heather) Teelander of Laingsburg, Brian (Jessie) Teelander of Holt, MI and James (Kris) Teelander of St. Johns. Carl had 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, brother Gary (Helen) Teelander of Custer, MI and sister Bonnie Sepkoski of St. Johns and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beverly.

Lois Helen Warner

Lois Helen Warner, age 95 of St. Johns, MI passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Grace Haven Assisted Living, St. Johns, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church, St. Johns, MI on Monday February 27, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Tim Knaus officiating. Burial will take place at Elkland Cemetery, Cass City, MI on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI and for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Lois was born in Sanilac County, MI on December 25, 1921, the daughter of Frederick and Ethel June (Urquhart) Emigh. She married Kenneth Whitaker on November 18, 1950 and he died in 1976. Lois married Kenneth Warner on August 8, 1981 and he preceded her in death on December 28, 2012. She worked at Upjohn in Southfield and as a nurse’s aide at a convalescent home. She enjoyed Swedish weave needle work, making afghans, lap robes, and table runners. Lois taught sewing, was a dress maker having made the dress for her wedding and her funeral. She spent many hours doing missionary work making pill envelopes to send to doctors in India. Lois enjoyed doing work for the missions and participating in Senior Saints activities with Kenneth at the First Baptist Church, St. Johns, MI where they were longtime members. Lois is survived by her stepson Gordon K. Warner of Guadalajara Jal. Mexico.

Marlene A. French

Marlene A. French, 84 of Bradenton, Florida died on February 17, 2017. She was born on August 18, 1932 in Escanaba, MI the daughter of Paul A. and Isabel (Valliere) Klug. She married Harvey French on June 6, 1952 in Delta County, MI and he preceded her in death in 1986. Marlene loved playing Bingo, could never pass up a yard sale and enjoyed volunteering at the Church Thrift Shop in Florida. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns.

Survivors are her children, Gary (Judy) French of Freeland, MI, James (Jayne) French of St. Johns, MI, Julie (Keith) Wolfe of Bradenton, FL, and Sheri (Ross) Gottstein of Lutz, FL. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Marlene was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Klug.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 9a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home in St. Johns, MI. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Father Michael Williams officiating. Burial will be at South Bingham Cemetery. Marcia Jean Simmon, age 75 of Lake George, MI, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor in St. Johns, MI

A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 23, 2017 with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home.

Marcia was born in Lake George, Michigan on November 3, 1941, the daughter of Kenneth and Ova (Purvis) Myers. Marcia married Richard Simmon on November 21, 1959 and he passed away on October 4, 1989. She resided most of her life in St. Johns and Lake George. She loved to write poetry; some of her poems were published. Her cats were very important to her. She enjoyed spending time outdoors and taking rides on the pontoon; she also enjoyed playing bingo. Marcia will be remembered for her love of spending time with her friends and family.

She is survived by her daughter Tina and Jimmy Yee of Golden, CO; son Anthony and Adrienne Simmon of Chesaning, MI; daughter Vicki Cantrell and Phil Ehlert of Ovid, MI; son Randy and Misty Simmon of St. Johns, MI; 8 grandchildren Alicia, Calvin, Astra, Richard, Lathia, Chiristine, Michael, and Randy K; 8 great-grandchildren; niece and nephew Angela and Raymond (Ray Ray); brother-in-law Bill and JoAnn Simmon of Fowler, MI; special friend Tom Janecke; loving ex-sister-in-law Jean Campbell. Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Stacy Simmon, brother Raymond and Basil Russell, and half brothers Skip and Sonny Russell.

John C. Schlarf

John C. Schlarf died Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the age of 82. He was born February 5, 1935 in St. Johns, MI the son of Glenn and Mary (Matthews) Schlarf. John was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, Class of 1952 and served his country in the Navy. John attended the Bannister United Methodist Church, was a lifelong farmer and worked as a mechanic at S&H Farms. John loved the outdoors and enjoyed all types of outdoor activities. On February 9, 1958 he married Mary Ann Nixon and they just celebrated 59 years together.

Surviving John besides his wife, Mary Ann are his children, Cathy (Jerry) Weber, Russ (Wendee) Schlarf and Sandy (Jeff) Aprill; five grandchildren, John, Lauren and Alex Aprill, Stuart and Sawyer Schlarf; two sisters, Margaret Bontrager and Janet (Bill) Haupert; many nieces and nephews and his little black dog, Gidge. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Jimmy and three brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Pastor Mona Dye and Pastor Kathy Leydorf-Keck officiating. Interment will follow at Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, February 17 and one hour prior the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Kimberly A. Diethrich, age 53, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017. She was born May 2, 1963 in Alma, Michigan. Kim grew up and raised her family in St. Johns, Michigan.

She is survived by her five children, Robert Hoover (Jillian Taborsky), Christopher Hoover (Lanae Mabey), Carrie Hoover (Randy Brown), Matthew Newton (Jessica Newton) and Richard Diethrich II (Taylor Galloway); 11 grandchildren, Alana, Keili, Jaxon, Ayla, Zachary, Zoey, Reanna, Malikhi, Jayce, Julius and Emma; siblings, Rodney Peck (William McClure), Sherry DeVos (Steve DeVos), Marty Peck (Brandi Peck) and Rebecca Baley; niece, Amanda Newman (Chris Kirby); nephew, Cody Lavia; and a host of family and friends. Kim was preceded in death by her mother, Dora Behl; fathers, RG Peck and Herman Behl; and her life partner, Richard Diethrich.

A memorial service and dinner will be held in Kim’s memory at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the American Legion, 1000 Lawrence Hwy, Charlotte. Honoring her wishes cremation will take place. Arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids.

Patricia Marie Kitson, age 78 of DeWitt, MI, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2017 surrounded by her family at her home.

Patricia was born in Bath, MI on December 18, 1938, the daughter of Charles Edgar and Alice Irene (Gardener) Purvis. She resided most of her life in St. Johns. She was a lifetime member of Seventh Day Adventist Church Holt, MI. Her church and helping people were very important to her throughout her life. She was supportive of many organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Adventist Frontier, 3ABN Television Network, Meals on Wheels, and Christian Education, to name a few. Patricia will be remembered as a consummate homemaker, faithful wife and loving mother. She had an unfailing sense of humor in all circumstances and an unshakable faith in the Lord.

She is survived by her husband Lyle Kitson of DeWitt, MI. Jerry Ann Beaufore

Jerry Ann Beaufore, 75 of St. Johns, MI went to be with her Lord on Sunday, February 5, 2017. She was born on December 2, 1941 in Saginaw, MI the daughter of Stanley and Mary (Spess) Plaza. She graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1959. She went on to graduate from Michigan State University with a BA in Education in 1961, and later completed her Masters of Education and Specialist Degree also from MSU. Jerry Ann taught at Ovid-Elsie Schools for 2 years and then moved to St. Johns High School where she taught Business Education for 28 years. Jerry Ann married Lynne Beaufore in August of 1962 until he preceded her in death. Jerry Ann married Paul Shauger on February 25, 2015 after a 30 year courtship.

Surviving is her husband, Paul; daughters, Nicole (Ho. B.) Le, Andrea Beaufore, step-daughter, Renee (John) Young, and step-son, Kevin (Jeanne) Shauger. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Jessica, Ginni, Casey, Chloe, Dillon, Chelsea and Emily; and 5 great grandchildren, Jordon, Henry, Lily, Kylie and Marilyn. Jerry Ann is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Marie Plaza, her first husband, Lynne and her step-son, Kirk Shauger.

Jerry was a very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the YaYa Sisters. Jerry Ann loved to travel and spent winters in Arizona with her husband where they were able to hike, kayak, bike and enjoy outdoor activities. She loved her family and friends, and was a joyful presence always. Jerry Ann was an avid writer and journaled personal family histories for all her family, and also her walk with God through her life and recent battle.

Memorial services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. Bryan Salminen officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Church beginning at 9:00 A.M. Saturday, February 18, 2017. Dennis was born in New Port Beach, MI on May 9, 1940, the son of Ernest Alvin and Mildred Gertrude (Percy) Schroeder. He graduated from Trenton High School with the class of 1958. Dennis served his country in the U.S. Navy. On July 2, 1960 he married Eydie Jeffries in Wyandotte, MI. Dennis worked for United Airlines, before he became a trucker for 40 years. He was a member of Duplain Church of Christ St. Johns, MI, where he was a deacon, an elder and an elder-emeritus of his church.

He is survived by his wife Eydie Schroeder of St. Johns, MI, 2 daughters; Renee’ and Lon Gibson of Dewitt, MI, Becky Sue Schroeder of St. Johns, MI, sons; Eric and Carol Schroeder of Lansing, MI, Bert and Hilleke Botter of the Netherlands and others he considered as sons; Terry Simison, and Chuck & Debbie Pelton, grandchildren; Trevor and Amy Gibson, Nicole Gibson, Shelby and Joe Peiffer, Zach Speckin, 2 sisters; Bonnalyn Truxall, and Barbara Schroeder. There were many others who considered him Dad and Grandpa. He was predeceased by his parents and a son Tony Huff.

Gladys Ann Ruestman, age 80, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017, at her daughter’s home.

Gladys was born in St. Johns, MI on December 12, 1936, the daughter of Martin and Lona (Marten) Silm. Gladys graduated from St. Johns High School and later attended Davenport College in Lansing, MI. Gladys was a long time member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church and resident of St. Johns, MI. She was very active in the church and was involved in planning funeral dinners and Ladies Guild. She was an avid sports fan and especially liked MSU. Gladys loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her daughter Evelyn Peterson, grandchldren; Ryan Peterson, Emily Peterson, Lindsay Teems, Nicholas Ruestman, Megan Ruestman, Alexa Ruestman, great grandchildren; Michael and Dustin Teems, brother Charlie and Theresa Silm, and special friend John Ernst. Leora Irene Grubaugh Andrews

Leora Irene Grubaugh Andrews, age 90 of Delta Township , passed away January 19, 2017 at Sparrow Hospice Services. She was born February 5, 1926 in Gratiot County, the daughter of hard-working farmers Harold and Wilma (Dush) Grubaugh. Leora was a 1943 graduate of Fulton High School and retired at age 70 from the State of Michigan.

Leora is survived by her two daughters: Sherry (Wesley) Havens of Delta Township, Janie Andrews of Delta township, granddaughter, Jill Harris Nower (David) of Delta Township and great grandson, Riley Nower; Sister-in-law Janet Grubaugh of St. Johns, niece, Janelle (Dave) Maniez, grand nephews, David and Joshua Maniez and grandniece Ashtyn Maniez of St. Louis. Leora was blessed with 3 stepchildren that she loved as deeply as her own: Richard (Nancy) Andrews of Maple Rapids; Robert (Paula) Andrews of Leesburg, Florida, and Sandy Gimotty (deceased); Beloved step grandchildren; Mark Andrews of Houston, Texas; Marlin (Angela) Andrews of Middleton; Matthew Andrews of Muskegon; Michael (Tiffanie) Andrews of Perrinton; Mitch (Danell) Andrews of Perrinton; Robby Andrews of Miami, Florida; Randy (Deb) Andrews of Brighton; Ryan (Monica) Andrews of Brighton; Bryan Kowalski of Akron, Ohio; Dannette Burch of Greenville as well as several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Leora’s family was her pride and joy and top priority in life and she took great care of them, always putting their needs first and foremost forsaking hobbies and special interests. She wanted nothing for herself and all who knew her will say that she was a totally selfless human being. She suffered poor health over the past several years but still managed to persevere. She will be greatly missed by her family, special cousins, and friends as a very kind, compassionate and caring soul.

William Arthur “Bill” Burnham age 85, of Perrinton, MI, passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 at Sparrow Health Systems Lansing, MI.

Burial will take place at Fulton Center Cemetery, Perrinton, MI. Bill was born in St. Johns, MI on April 28, 1931, the son of Jeanne and Lyna (Gotham) Burnham. He graduated from St. Johns High School with the class of 1948. Bill married Rosella Plowman on October 7, 1950 in St. Johns, MI. Rosella passed away January 6, 1983.

Bill worked for many places including; farming in his younger years, Gower’s Elevator in Eureka, Pompeii Crop Service, and Beck’s Farm Market. He spent 23 years as a Supervisor and Assessor at Fulton Township and spent a short time as an assessor at North Shade Township. He was a member of the Pompeii United Methodist Church and a life member of the Pompeii Odd Fellows and Rebecca’s. He was also a member and secretary of the Maple Valley Lions Club. Bill was a former boy scout leader in Gratiot county and 4-H leader in Clinton and Gratiot counties. Bill enjoyed playing cards, golfing, bowling, fishing, flowers, gardening, campfires, bible study, and cookouts on Saturday’s with his family. Bill had a very large bell collection. He loved the time he spent with his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren meant more than anything to him.

Bill is survived by his children; Elaine Burnham, Guy and Gretchen Burnham, grandchildren; Michaela Ann Burnham, Jeremy and Kaitlin Burnham, Esther and Joel Haviland, Heidi and Anthony Whitford, great grandchildren; Blake, William, Bridger, Bethanie, Ashton, Boden, and Violet and sister Barbara Anderson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and five sisters.

Edward Robert “Bob” Grams

Edward Robert “Bob” Grams, of St. Johns, died Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the age of 76. He was born November 1, 1940 in Toledo, OH the son of Edward O. and Beatrice (Post) Grams. Bob was a member of Pilgrim United Methodist Church and a dairy farmer. He was the owner of Valleyside Dairy Farms Inc. and Valleyside Custom Chopping. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family and could often be found crop checking, tending to his vegetable garden or enjoying sunset cruises on his pontoon. He was a member of the Professional Dairy Farmers Association of Michigan, Clinton County Farm Bureau, Independent Dairy Advisory Board, and Clinton County Master Gardeners. On May 20, 1967 he married Karen Bickford and she survives him.

Also surviving is one daughter, Terri (Eric) Harger of St.Johns; three sons, Marc (Casie), Lorin (Katie) all of St. Johns, and Matthew (Emily) of Harrisville, MI: thirteen grandchildren, Clayton, Bryce and Graham Harger, Tatum, Julia, Koy, Koen, Harper, Liam, Sawyer, Alexandria, Bickford and Charlotte Grams; one brother, Duane (Marlene) Grams of Edmore. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Payton Grams.

Martha was born in Elba Township, MI on August 7, 1913, the daughter of Archie and Bertha (Heinze) Crippin and was a graduate of Elsie High School. She married Duane DeLong on October 20, 1954 and he passed away on October 31, 1998. Martha resided most of her life in St. Johns, MI. She was a member of Community Christian Church and a life member of Fenmore Crescent Club. She loved bowling, playing cards, dancing, gardening, traveling, and watching and feeding birds and squirrels. Martha formerly ran the Stockyard Restaurant and worked at MacKinnons in St. Johns.

She is survived by her children: Norita and Louis Anderson of St. Johns, MI, Allen and Shirley Bebow of St. Johns, MI, step-daughter Virginia and Nazir Cheema of South Carolina, 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren, brother-in-law Kenny DeLong of Owosso, MI, nephew Donald and Bonnie DeLong of Potterville, MI, and 2 nieces; Karen DeLong of Owosso, MI and Kitty Howard of Holly, MI. Martha is also survived by several nieces, nephews and special friends Ralph and JoAnn Ball of Potterville, MI. Audrey was born in Pontiac, MI on May 12, 1931, the daughter of Zenos and Letah (Knight) Hyler. She married Donald E. Little on November 24, 1956; Donald passed away on December 22, 1999. Audrey was formerly a greeter at Walmart in St. Johns and had worked at Sealed Power and Federal Mogul Manufacturing. She was a dedicated mother and grandma. Audrey especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her daughter Shelly Bird-McKay and Kale McKay of Elsie, MI and grandson Jarrod Bird of Elsie, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Donald (Doris) Hyler, sister Phyllis (Norman) Woodbury, and son in law Gene Bird.

Cayden Joseph Patrick

Cayden Joseph Patrick, age 18 of Laingsburg, went to be with his Heavenly Father peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 21. 2017 after a 5 1/2 year courageous battle with cancer. Cayden was born on February 19, 1998 in Lansing to Buck and Rebecca (Gazda) Patrick. He had graduated from Laingsburg Public Schools in 2016. Cayden enjoyed hunting, golfing, basketball and photography but his biggest passion was his love for Jesus which was evident through his kind heart and considering others more important than himself.

Cayden is survived by his parents, Buck and Rebecca, brother, Benjamin and sister Macee grandparents Frank and Rita Gazda of Ovid, Dave and Barb Vincent of Laingsburg and Walter and Theresa Patrick of Elsie; great- grandpa, Donald Mulder of Ovid and great-grandma Vivian Schumacher of Clair, MI; many aunts, uncles and cousins, and his newest cousin, his name sake, Brynleigh Cayden Fahey, age 3 weeks of Ovid.

Fern Nichols

The light in Mom’s kitchen is now turned off and the mixer now idle as God has called her aloft. Fern was born in Snover, Michigan, the daughter of Beatrice and Alexander Heussner on August 25, 1921 and passed away in East Lansing, Michigan on January 20, 2017 at the age of 95. Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great, Great Grandmother, Sister, and Aunt. She married Frederick Nichols on November 23, 1937. She was a devoted wife and loving mother, a world class homemaker, cook and master gardener. She worked for the Haslett School System in Haslett, Michigan for 15 ½ years as a cook, where she enjoyed cooking for all the children. Her priorities were her husband, family, friends and church, teaching all the gift of giving and sharing.

She is survived by five children, Nancy George, Dianne (Antone) Wenos, Carole (Raymond) Miller, Timothy (Judy) Nichols, Thomas (Peggy) Nichols; daughter in-law, Elisabeth Nichols; sister, Lorraine Kraft; sister-in-law, Esther Heussner, 22 grandchildren, 67 great grandchildren, 28 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her father and mother-in-law Vern and Fern Nichols, her husband Fred of 69 years (2007), a daughter, Deanna (1950), a son, Paul (1982), a son, Lorne (2013), a grandson, Brian (1988), a son-in-law, James George, a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Isham and her husband Clyde Isham, a brother, Lloyd Heussner, a brother-in-law, Donald Kraft, a sister-in-law, Cleo Chard and brother-in-law, Harold Chard, a sister-in-law Olive Bergeau and brother-in-law Evalt “Bergie” Bergeau.

On Saturday, January 28, 2017 a Memorial Service will be celebrated at the Pilgrim United Methodist Church located at 2964 W. Park Rd., St. Johns, Michigan 48879. There will be a visitation from 11:00 am until 12:45 pm with the service beginning at 1:00 pm. Douglas Darrell Huguelet, age 59, passed over on January 13, 2017 surrounded by his family at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Doug was born October 13, 1957 in Gratiot County to Darrell Douglas Sump and Joan (Johnson) Huguelet. Doug retired from Lyden Oil Company, where he was an over the road truck driver for 30 years. He attended St. Johns High School.

Surviving him are his parents, Joan Huguelet of Webster, Florida and Lyle (Shirley) Huguelet of Dewitt, brother, Bill (Sharon) Huguelet of Dewitt and sister Wendy (Keith) Potts of Dewitt as well as one son Jeremy Huguelet of Gladwin. Also surviving him is his wife and best friend Kim, four step children Scott Knickerbocker (Valerie) of St. Johns, Jamie Parks (Chad Torka) of Linwood, Heidi Parks (Shawn Miller) of St. Johns and Geoffrey Parks of Ovid as well as two grandchildren, Mariah and Hunter and four step grandchildren Joseph and Averie Knickerbocker and Logan Plowman and Emma Miller. Doug was predeceased by his birth father.

Doug was an avid fisherman and a hunter of deer and morel mushrooms. He loved gardening and prided himself on growing the tallest sunflowers. He especially loved taking the whole family to the annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge walk. Doug also loved watching the Pistons and the Tigers with his “Ole’ pal Dozer.”

A memorial service is being planned. Donations may be made to Hospice Angels Foundation or Hospice Compassus of Lansing, Michigan. Arrangements made with Cremation Society of Mid Michigan. All sympathy store items must be sent directly to the family home.

David Carl Jakovac

David Carl Jakovac, 73 or rural DeWitt passed away on January 17, 2017. David was born on December 1, 1943 in Lansing, MI the son of Karl G. and Melva Irene (Bayes) Jakovac. He graduated from Sexton High School in 1961 and on December 12, 1964 he married Nancy (Marten) Jakovac. David worked as the Head Custodian for the Lansing School District at Sexton High. He loved bowling, arts and crafts and wood work, cooking and being a handy man.

Survivors are his wife Nancy, daughter Becky (Marten) Carl of Alma, MI, son-in-law Marc Arthur; grandchildren Amanda and Nolan Arthur and Dylan Carl. He was preceded in death by his daughter Melissa Arthur, son-in-law Randy Carl, and sister Rhoda Murry.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home in St. Johns on Friday, January 20, 2017, 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Shirley A. Rademacher, age 90 of St. Johns, MI, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Prestige Pines, Dewitt, MI.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI, on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 11:00 A.M., with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

Shirley was born in Gratiot County, MI on February 15, 1926 the daughter of Fred and Loretta (Barrett) Stoneman. She was a graduate of Fulton High School and resided most of her life in St. Johns. Shirley married Raymond Rademacher on August 30, 1947; he passed away on March 31, 2007. Shirley loved gardening and canning. She also loved to fish. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI.

She is survived by 3 sons; Thomas and Nancy Rademacher of Brighton, MI, Richard and Elaine Rademacher of Traverse City, MI, and Gary and Linda Rademacher of St. Johns, MI, 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers; John Stoneman of DeWitt, MI, and Larry and Sherry Stoneman of Elsie, MI. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother Lee Stoneman.

Gladys A. Bacon

Gladys A. “Ginger” Bacon died Friday, January 13, 2017 at the age of 87. She was born May 16, 1929 in Owosso, MI the daughter of James and Anna (Birchmeir) Limbaugh. She was a member of American Legion Post # 96, AMVETS Post # 13, Grayling Moose Lodge # 1162 and Roscommon VFW Post #4159. Ginger retired from Michigan State University in 2001 after 30 years of service.

Surviving is one daughter, Sandi (Dale) Bauer of St. Johns; one son, Robert Bacon of Mt. Pleasant; two grandchildren, Rachael (Bart) Post and Shari (Tom) Jurecko; four great grandchildren, Brett and Kate Post and Evan and Rylen Jurecko. She was preceded in death by two daughters, infant Karen K. Bacon and Linda Woodhams; a great grandson, Christopher Post; eight brothers and sisters and her beloved companion, Snickers her dog.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, January 16, 2017 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Deacon Marvin Robertson officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends 11:00 AM until service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Adele Doreen Neller

Adele Doreen Neller, age 67 of St. Johns, MI, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017 at her home with her family.

No services will be held.

Adele was born in St. Johns, MI on March 10, 1949, the daughter of Melvin and Janice (Creaser) Frost. Adele resided most of her life in St. Johns. She graduated from St. Johns High School and attended Lansing Community College. She was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. Adele loved her family and was very involved in her grandchildren’s lives. She enjoyed her flower garden, crocheting, reading and Soduko puzzles. Adele will be remembered for her decorating skills on holidays. She loved to cook and bake. Adele was talented in drawing and singing.

She is survived by her son Todd and Dannie Neller of St. Johns, MI, son Randy and Shannon Neller of St. Johns, MI, son Brian Neller and Goddess Knight of St. Johns, MI, son Corey and Cassandra Neller of Perrinton, MI, daughter Christi Neller of St. Johns, MI, son Brad Neller of St. Johns, MI, 8 grandchildren and one on the way, a great-granddaughter, parents Melvin and Janice Frost of St. Johns, MI, 2 sisters; Connie and Tom Allen of North Carolina, and JoAnn and Ron Litwiller of St. Johns, MI, and brother Russ Frost of Georgia. Adele was preceded in death by her grandson Carson Neller and her grandparents.

Don enjoyed playing cards, games, golfing and visiting and helping family. He worked at Federal Mogul for over 15 years. Don was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI.

Ronald was born in St. Johns, Michigan on August 19, 1948, the son of Joseph and Rose (Hufnagel) Thelen. Ron resided most of his life in Pewamo and was a graduate of Pewamo-Westphalia High School. Ron had a true love for everyone in his family, especially his grandchildren. Ron was a lifelong farmer. He retired from the Ionia County Commission on Aging, even after retirement he continued to be a provider of respite care. Ron enjoyed hunting, fishing, garage sales and visits to Lake Michigan. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo, MI.

He is survived by 3 sons: Chad (Kendra) Thelen of St. Johns, MI; Jason Thelen of DeWitt, MI; Nicholas (Elizabeth) Thelen of Pewamo, MI; daughter Kristi Pline of Westphalia, MI; their mother Karen Simon Thelen of St. Johns, MI; 6 grandchildren: Aubrey, Jennah and Cole Pline, Hunter, Haidyn and Harper Thelen and another granddaughter due in March; and sister Therese Winslow of Belmont, MI. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, son Jeremy Paul Thelen, son-in-law Jeffrey Pline and brother-in-law James Winslow.

Dennis Martin Fox

Dennis Martin Fox passed away on January 4, 2017 in St. Johns where he has resided for 60 years. Dennis was born in Fowler, MI on October 1, 1929 to Martin and Matilda (Thelen) Fox. He retired from sales after 37 years and was a member of the St. Joseph Parish and the St. Johns Lions Club. He cherished his family and doted on his eight grandchildren. Family weeks at Little Glen Lake and the many walking trips to the ice cream store to treat the grandchildren were special times.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Romilda (Millie) Simon, children, Anne Fox, Tim (Mary) Fox, Greg (Kathleen) Fox and Erin (Jeff) Hackett, eight grandchildren, Theresa (Jimmy) Dunn, Laura Fox, Madeline, Griffin and Stephen Fox, Ellen (Grant Cook), Benjamin and Elizabeth Hackett and sister-n-law, Elaine Fox. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Grace Kaulfuss, Joan Becker and brother Gerald M. Fox.

Linda K. Myers, 62 of Fowler, MI passed away on January 3, 2017 at her home. Linda was born on November 18, 1954 in Carson City, MI the daughter of Donald and Edna (Snyder) Falor. She graduated from Fowler High School in 1973 and was working as a medical transcriptionist at Clinton County Medical Center. Linda loved her family and having her grandchildren around her.

Survivors are her children, Adam (Kristina) Myers, of Fowler and Nicole and Tim Weiler of Lakeview, MI. Her parents of Fowler, grandchildren, Baylee Myers, Roran and Kayson Weiler; brothers, Steven (Missy) Falor of Ovid and Gary Falor of Fowler and everal nieces and nephews.

Nancy L. Chmiko

Nancy L. Chmiko died Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the age of 81. She was born February 26, 1935 in Gratiot County, MI the daughter of Ralph and Margaret (Hummel) Saurbek. Nancy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul. For several years she was an elementary school aide for the St. Johns Public Schools. On October 8, 1955 she married John Chmiko and he survives her.

Also surviving are four daughters, Lori Ann (Matthew) Smith of Ovid, Suzanne (Tom) Korkoske of Williamston, Tina Stevens of Delaware, OH and Amy (Drew) Sutton of Grand Rapids; one son, John M. Chmiko Jr.; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a brother, William (Patricia) Saurbek of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Saurbek and a sister, Sally Hettler.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Thursday, January 5, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 109 Linden, St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams as Celebrant. Dilynn Goodknecht

Our beautiful daughter, Dilynn Raeann Goodknecht passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. In one short week, our precious girl showed us so much strength and fight and we are all so grateful to have been able to love her. She was born December 27, 2016 in Ann Arbor, MI the daughter of Christopher Goodknecht and Marcy Powelson.

Moving forward to cherish memories of her are her parents, Christopher and Marcy; a brother Brantley; grandparents, Mike and Connie Goodknecht, Diane and Fred Gibbs, Dennis and Mary Powelson and Julie and Mike Beeson; great grandparents, Bernard and Helen Goodknecht, Martha Powelson and Edith Hayner and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Pilgrim United Methodist Church 2965 W. Parks Rd. St. Johns with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends Saturday, 10:00 AM until service time at the church. Contributions made, will be used to provide a living memorial in memory of Dilynn. Curtis Jordan Feldpausch

Curtis Jordan Feldpausch died unexpectedly Friday, December 30, 2016 at the age of 22. He was born August 13, 1994 in Lansing, MI the son of Steve and Eileen (Koenigsknecht) Feldpausch. Curtis earned his Associate’s Degree from New Tribes Bible Institute and was working as a welder and fabricator for Schneider Fabrication in St. Johns. Curtis was a loving husband and had a great appreciation for the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish. Above all Curtis found his joy in Christ. He believed he was fearfully and wonderfully made by His Holy Maker, and served Him to the finish line. On August 8, 2015 he married his bride, Rachael, who looks forward to seeing him in heaven one day.

Also waiting to see him again are his parents, Steve and Eileen Feldpausch; in-laws, Bruce and Michele Hill; six brothers, Matt and Carma, Nathan, Bryan and Trisha, Joshua and Lindsey, Andrew and Paige and Benjamin Feldpausch; four sisters, Annie Feldpausch, Elizabeth and Andrew Davis, Lydia and Phil Burkhart and Natalie Feldpausch; sister-in-law, Kelsey and Tom Edwards; brother-in-law, Bradley Hill and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
