Viola Irene Sharick
Viola Irene (Atkinson) Sharick, 75, of St. Johns, Michigan, passed away on January 30, 2021 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
Viola, or as most called her, Vi, was a lifelong resident of St. Johns, Michigan. Born to Thelma (Perry) and Arthur Atkinson on April 9, 1945, she graduated in 1963 from Rodney B. Wilson High School. She married Morris Sharick on December 7, 1963 and had three children: Dean, Julie and Gwynn.
Vi was an active parent, volunteering for Football Boosters, Band Boosters, Brownie Leader, and middle school noon hour supervisor where she was known to search through the trash for a thrown away retainer or 2! She was always the first to the party and last to leave – she Loved being around her friends and family. For years Vi did haircuts and styles for friends and family, which led to her following her dream of becoming a cosmetologist. She attended M. J. Murphy College of Beauty, getting her license in 1982. She continued to do hair until she retired.
Vi was an avid golfer, playing many years on the women’s and couples golf leagues at the Clinton County Country Club and the Emerald at Maple Creek. She also enjoyed her league bowling at Redwing Lanes, and earned her 40-year state tournament pin. If Vi wasn’t at the bowling alley, golfing, or cutting hair you would find her with a book or magazine in her hand; she loved to read.
After retiring, Vi and Moe bought an RV traveling to Florida, South Carolina, and ultimately settling in Lake Havasu City, Arizona for the winters. There they enjoyed old friends from St. Johns, and made many new ones. Vi always needed to make sure Moe got “that site on the corner”. The last few years, Vi and Moe have been snowbirds in South Carolina enjoying condo life on the ocean, one of Vi’s favorite places.
Vi is survived by her husband of 57 years, Morris (Moe) Sharick; son Dean (Colleen) Sharick of St. Johns; daughters Julie McDonald (Todd) of Battle Creek, and Gwynn Sharick (Elberson) of Howell. Also surviving are grandchildren Brad (Courtney) Sharick, Greg (Heather) Sharick, Britney (Brandon) Burton, Cassie (Josh) Ross, Chad McDonald (Kelsey), Emily Jo Sharick (Josh), Emily Ann (Jonathan) Hanje, Sean Elberson and Seth Elberson; great-grandchildren Isabella Sharick, Travis Burton, Skyler Burton, Barrett Sharick, Rosalie Burton, and Graeme Ross who she enjoyed spoiling and sending home with a “too bad I’m Grandma” comment.
She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur Atkinson and Thelma (Atkinson) Perry, and step-father Maynard Perry. She was the youngest of 12 siblings, and was a special Aunt to many nieces and nephews. She truly cherished family above all.
A private family funeral service will be held in St. Johns at a later date, followed by a Celebration of Life. Those who knew Vi, know she would be extremely angry if we had a funeral and everyone was standing around crying. She would want us to celebrate her and our memories of her, which we know are many!
