Free Breakfast and Lunch this summer

St. Johns Public Schools is offering free food for all kids this summer.They are offering this through the federal program called “Meet Up and Eat Up.”

The Summer Food Service Program was created to ensure that children in lower-income areas could continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations when they do not have access to the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs. The SFSP, also known as Meet Up and Eat Up, is operated at the local level by program Sponsors and is administered in Michigan by the Michigan Department of Education.

Which children can participate?
1.Children who are 18 years of age or younger.
2.Disabled persons, regardless of age, who are determined by MDE or a local public educational agency (school district or public school academy) to be mentally or physically disabled and who participate in a public or non-profit private school program established for the mentally or physically disabled.

You will be “Swinging on a Star” at Concert in the Park – June 20

A warm summery evening is the perfect time for a trip down memory lane, and the William E. Tennant Performance Shell at the St. Johns City Park is the perfect venue for the June 20 event in the St. Johns Concert in the Park Summer Series. Homegrown Productions brings the sweet sounds of the swing era in a program of songs from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s. Show time is 7 p.m.; no admission charge.

“Swinging on a Star,” a musical revue, features a wide array of classic tunes by some of the local area’s most accomplished musicians. There will be musical memories like Stardust, The Way You Look Tonight, As Time Goes By, Steppin’ Out with My Baby, and, of course, Swingin’ on a Star. 


Tom and Beth Webb are part of the “Swinging on a Star” musical revue June 20 at St. Johns Concert in the Park.

St. Johns residents Beth Webb and Susan DeRosa created and directed this program for Lansing’s Starlight Dinner Theatre’s past season. The cast, crew and musicians look forward to bringing this encore performance to the Concert in the Park series. Performers include Marci Balogh, Ellen Hoard, Darryl Schmitz, Tom Webb and Beth Webb. Lansing area theatre goers will also recognize other performers, Bill Henson, Rachel Mender, Charlotte Ruppert, David Sincox, Dan Templin and Marty Underhill. They are accompanied by James Taradze on piano, Scott Harding on drums and Jack Mumma on string bass. Original choreography is by Fran Ludington.

Concert in the Park is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the City of St. Johns with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Concerts are held each Wednesday evening; rain or shine. The St. Johns Lions and Lioness Club staff a concession stand offering light refreshments.

Old friends to part

St. Joseph School’s Mr. Tom Karek says goodbye to his long time friend, Mr. Hoover. Faithful servants till the end! Although they are both retiring, we think it is Mr. Hoover that is going into the dumpster.


SJPD makes awards

At Monday night’s City Commission meeting Chief Kirk handed out several awards.

Megen Hurst was given a Certificate of Appreciation for the work she did in helping to design a new shoulder patch for the 150th anniversary of the police department. Those shoulder patches are now being worn on the officer’s uniforms.

Sgt. Ben Helms was awarded with a Life Saving Award for his response to an ambulance call of a person down and not breathing. He initiated CPR and continued until ambulance personnel arrived.

Officer Greg Spitler was awarded a Life Saving Award and Auxiliary Officer Jeff Spitler was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for their response to a call for an overdose victim that was unresponsive and not breathing. They initiated CPR and continued until ambulance personnel arrived on scene.


Local gallery restoring VFW mural

Tiny by Design Art & Whimsical Party Gallery owners have been commissioned to restore this amazing mural, half painted and half wood burned. The mural was donated to the VFW Hall by local artist Warren Anderson in 1954.

They were working in the studio throughout the week on the restoration process involving many steps including cleaning, stripping, retouching and re-varnishing.

Visit the facility at 304 Brush Street here in St. Johns on Tuesday night, June 26th anytime between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and see it all. CRV will be showing off their new facility, talking about programs they currently have, where they are going and how you and your family can be involved. No matter your age, there are things for you.

CRV would like to get to know you and show you what they have to offer and how you can benefit from the services and resources. If you have known about CRV in the past, they have recently expanded their offices and they would like to show it all to you.
