SJPD’s Helms recognized for heroism

On April 26, 2022 The Hundred Club recognized St. Johns Police Department Sgt. Ben Helms for Heroism for a incident that happened on September 30, 2019. The Hundred Club recognizes actions of Police, Fire and EMS nationwide. The Hundred Club also provides support for families of Police, Fire and EMS who lose their lives while serving the public.
September 30, 2019 at 8:26 p.m. Sgt. Helms was dispatched to the area of Whittemore and Railroad street. The caller told dispatch that there was a suspicious person on the west side of the bridge. Upon arriving Sgt. Helms located a teenage male kneeling facing the side-wall of the bridge. Sgt. Helms tried to verbally engage the person, but he didn’t reply.
Sgt. Helms could see that the person had something in his hand. Sgt. Helms approached the person and as soon as he noticed Sgt. Helms he jumped to his feet and began to climb the side wall of the bridge. Sgt. Helms ran to the person and was able to grab him around the waist as he was attempting to jump from the bridge. A struggle ensued as Sgt. Helms was trying to pull the person off the side wall back towards the roadway.
During this struggle Sgt. Helms was able to hit his emergency button alerting dispatch. More Officers were dispatched to the scene. The person repeatedly attempted to make it over the side wall with Sgt. Helms attached. Sgt. Helms was eventually able to pin the person against the side wall of the bridge.
Officer Worrall and Deputy Spitler arrived and were able to restrain the person until Clinton Area ambulance arrived. The person was transported to Sparrow Hospital. Once the person was de-escalated he told Officers that he was going to hang himself from the bridge. The object that was in his hand initially was a rope that was tied to the bridge with a noose on the other end.
Sgt. Helms put his life at risk to save another person who was having a mental health crisis. Sgt Helms would like to thank Clinton County Central Dispatch, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, Officer Worrall, and Deputy Spitler.
