Barry Lynn Hallead

Barry Lynn Hallead, age 75, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023 at his home with his wife and family by his side.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, January 9, 2023 with Pastor Mona Kindel officiating. Burial will take place at South Bingham Township Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 9, 2023 from 12 P.M. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Barry was born in Carson City, MI on April 9, 1947, the son of Ralph Viven and Alice Mae (Teed) Hallead. He was a graduate of St. Johns High School. On March 21, 1970 he married Cathy Barber in Bloomfield Hills, MI.

In his youth Barry enjoyed time with his friends working on and drag racing cars. Barry was very involved in his children’s sporting activities, watching, and coaching baseball, swimming and golf. Barry retired from Melling Drop Forge in Lansing, MI. In retirement he enjoyed golfing with family and friends. Barry and Cathy traveled around the United States in their motor home. An avid outdoorsman, Barry enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and most of all cutting wood on his family land. 

He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years Cathy Hallead of St. Johns, MI; son Christopher and Andrea Hallead of St. Johns, MI; daughter Veronica and Chad Huver of DeWitt, MI; three grandchildren Nickolas and Laura Huver and Samantha Hallead; sister Leora and Junior Counts of St. James, MO; sister-in-law Linda Barber of Metamora, MI; brother-in-law Dennis and Iris Barber of Farwell, MI; brother-in-law Douglas and Kimberly Barber of Chinquapin, NC. Barry is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Paul Hallead and two brothers-in-law Donald and Daryl Barber.

Sally Lorraine Malatinsky

Sally Lorraine Malatinsky, of St. Johns, died peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 4, 2023 after a valiant battle with cancer. She was 72 years old.

Sally was born on March 8, 1950, the second of seven children born to William and Mildred (Vostrirancky) Dush. She graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1968 and enjoyed a long career in data processing until her retirement in 2003.

Sally was the kindest of souls, everyone’s path whom she crossed was touched by her gregarious, compassionate nature. She loved people, and people loved her. Her family was the light of her life, and she loved nothing more than hosting family holidays and game night every Friday. Sally adored (and spoiled) her grandchildren, who range in age from three to twenty-seven. She was an avid card and game player – bingo, euchre, rummy, cribbage, and aggravation were among her favorites. For the last fourteen years, Sally looked forward to spending the winter and playing cards in Zephyrhills, Florida with Jon and friends. She was always busy and on the go, truly living life to the fullest.

She will be missed by many, especially by the love of her life, Jon Thelen; her beloved daughters, Nikki (Ty) Maneval, Becky (Shawn) Fike, Jennifer Malatinsky; twelve cherished grandchildren, Brianna (Kyler), Dakota (Kayla), Makaila (Austin), Dustin, Makenzie, Wyatt (Lexi), Dylan (Eloise), Colton, Emma, Jazlynn, Parker and Kennedy; father, William (Andrea) Dush; five brothers, Ronnie Dush, John (Amy) Dush, Jerry (Dawn) Dush, Tim (Dee) Dush, Philip (Sandy) Dush; one sister, Peggy (Denny) Walker, as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Dush and son, Michael Malatinsky.

A Memorial Service will be held at McGeehan Funeral Home, Keck-Coleman Chapel, 1500 Waterford Pkwy, St. Johns on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at 2 PM with Pastor Kathy Leydorf-Keck officiating. A light luncheon will follow. Friends may visit the funeral home on Sunday from 12 -2 PM.

Lon Edward Canum

Lon Edward Canum, age 82, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022 in Henderson, Nevada after a short illness.  

Lon was born in St. Johns, Michigan on June 14, 1940, the son of Ralph and Beth (Boak) Canum. He married his high school sweetheart Kathyrn Magsig on January 30, 1960 in St. Johns, Michigan. They were blessed with almost sixty-three years of marriage.  

Lon was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School and Central Michigan University.  He retired from St. Johns Public Schools after years of service as a middle school math/science teacher and driver’s training instructor. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and making chocolate chip cookies for board game nights at the cottage.

He is survived by his wife Kathyrn Canum and daughter Karen (Scott) Nairn. He is also survived by his granddaughter Emily (Rick) Wrenn and one great-grandson Nick and a great-granddaughter on the way; and two brothers Lyle (Maureen) Canum and Lynn Canum; and brothers-in-law Charlie (Rose) Magsig and Bruce Cronkhite; and long-time friends John and Carolyn Beck; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Dutch Ernst, in-laws Glenn and Mildred Magsig and sister-in-law Amy Cronkhite. 

No services will be held per his wishes.  


Kevin J. Schafer

Kevin Joseph Schafer died Saturday, December 31, 2022 at the Hospice House of Mid Michigan. He was 55 years old.

Kevin was born February 14, 1967 in Lansing, the son of Mark L. and Arleita (Jury) Schafer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and calling WITL on Sunday mornings, was a U of M fan, and enjoyed pulling pranks.

He is survived by his three daughters, Stephanie (John Jr.) Joseph, Amanda (Ken Jr.) Farley and Morgan (Ned) Mowatt; seven grandchildren, Brayden, Brynlee, Alyvia, Sophia, Reegan, Cooper, and Jackstyn; his mother, Arleita Schafer; brothers, Gary (Sue) Schafer, Bruce (Lois) Schafer, Terry (Amy) Schafer; sisters; Sandra (Allen) Dault, Brenda (Randy) Antes, as well as several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father Mark L., sister Nancy, and brother John.

Paul Arnold Esch

Paul Arnold Esch, age 82, of Fowler, Michigan, passed away Friday, December 30, 2022 at Green Acres Retirement Living , Ionia, Michigan. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, Michigan, at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 with Rev. Fr. Eric Weber presiding. Burial will take place at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fowler, Michigan. Visitation will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Goerge Chapel, Fowler, Michigan on Monday, January 2, 2023 from 2-8 P.M. with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. A Rosary will be prayed 6:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

Paul was born in Fowler, Michigan on April 8, 1940, the son Leo and Martha (Hufnagel) Esch. He married MaryAnn Simon on September 29, 1962 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia, Michigan. They were blessed with fifty-four years of marriage; prior to her passing on January 9, 2017.

Paul retired from General Motors in Lansing, Michigan after thirty-six years of service. He enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, and playing cards. During the December 14 Christmas party he won three out of four games of setback against his kids. (He got the last laugh!) He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He is survived by his children: Leon and Lynda Esch, Glenn and Mary Esch, Steve and Joan Esch, and Donna and Dennis Schneider. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren and one more on the way; and one brother Julius Esch. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife MaryAnn, two sisters and their spouses: Julianna and Roy Motz, and Marie and Alfred Hengesbach, two brothers and their spouses: Joseph and Bernice Esch, and Louis and Alice Esch, and one sister-in-law Jane Esch.

Gary Brian Snyder

Gary Brian “Gip” Snyder, age 77, of Maple Rapids, MI, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022 at his home.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church, St. Johns, Michigan, on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Tim Knaus officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the church.

Gary was born in St. Johns, Michigan on July 5, 1945, the son Lyle M. and Harriett Alice (Weaver) Snyder. He graduated from Fulton High School with the class of 1963. Gary married Pamela (Schmidt) Snyder, on August 7, 1965 at Maple Rapids United Methodist Church, Maple Rapids, Michigan.

His family was very important to him. He served his church as a Sunday School Teacher and Awana Leader, a Deacon, and soul winner. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and skeet shooting, and trapping. Gary worked for Fisher Body for thirty years, retiring 1994. He was a member of First Baptist Church, St. Johns, Michigan.

He is survived by his wife Pamela Snyder, two sons: G. Brian and Janice Snyder, and Brook and Anna Snyder; ten grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter; two brothers: Ray and Elaine Snyder, and Ralph and Frances Snyder; three brothers-in-law: Rodney and JoanAnne Schmidt, Alan and Gellie Schmidt, and William and Jodi Schmidt. He is also survived by several step-siblings and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents, two brothers: Mearl and his wife Dottie, and Rocky Rand Snyder, USMC, who was killed in Vietnam in 1967, one sister Joan and her husband Gary Tucker, two step-mothers: Ruth Jones Snyder, and Opal Jason Snyder, and several step siblings.
