The June 28 Concert in the Park has been canceled due to air quality conditions. This is being done for the safety of both the musicians and our audience members. This was an extremely tough decision that was made jointly by both parties

“We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused,” says concert Chair Bill Tennant. “We hope to possibly reschedule the LCB Big Band for later in the summer, and hope to see you next week.”

Local hospital acquires yet another new name

Remember how we all had to learn to call Clinton Memorial Hospital in St. Johns Sparrow Clinton? Well, now that we have all pretty much adjusted to that we are going to have to retool our vocabulary once again.

Henceforth according to health system officials, the hospital down on Oakland Street will be known as University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Clinton, effective April 1, 2024, as part of Sparrow joining the Michigan Medicine clinical network.

The news comes on the heels of the positive feedback Sparrow has received about the health system’s planned new name, University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, which was announced two weeks ago. The new system name will also take effect April 1, 2024.

Sparrow leaders said they selected the new entity names to leverage the strength of the two top healthcare brands in the state.

“It was important to maintain the legacy and continuity of our Community Hospitals and E.W. Sparrow Hospital and the equity they have built in their communities, while drawing on the reputation of U-M Health as the preeminent health system in Michigan,” said James Dover, President and CEO, Sparrow Health System.

Sparrow joined University of Michigan Health in April 2023, contributing significantly to what is now the second largest health system in the state.

The new names specifically don’t include “Hospital” because the individual campuses are more than just a hospital building. Patients are increasingly served on an outpatient basis at one of Sparrow’s more than 150 sites of care. The names are intended to reflect an ongoing change in how healthcare is delivered and the entire breadth of Sparrow services, leaders said.

Sparrow will continue to be known as Sparrow Health System in internal and external communications until April 1, 2024, when the new name becomes official.

Big Band Jazz featured on Concert in the Park June 28

Songs from the “Great American Songbook” will float on the summer breeze when the Lansing Concert Band Big Band performs on Wednesday, June 28 as part of the St. Johns Concert in the Park summer music series. The program begins at 7 p.m. at the William E. Tennant Performance Shell in the beautiful St. Johns City Park.

The concert features jazz standards and music made popular by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and many more. “This special band was formed in 1993 by members of the Lansing Concert Band who wanted an opportunity to play the amazing jazz standards and bring this exciting art form to mid-Michigan audiences,” explains Concert chair Bill Tennant. “The band members have a passion for excellence and have a wonderful time performing this great music, which comes across in their performance.”

Jim Kasprzak, lead trumpet, directs the dynamic 18-piece group comprised of traditional jazz-era instrumentation. The ensemble also features two local mid-Michigan vocalists, who are no strangers to our St Johns community. Dan Templin and Kelly Sandula-Gruner have performed with the band in previous shell performances, with the Singers on the Grand at the Wilson Center, and also as the duo Clique Vocals on the Brown Bag Concert Series.

The Concert in the Park Series is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the City of St. Johns. The CCAC receives support from the Michigan Arts & Culture Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Concerts are held each Wednesday evening: rain or shine. There is no admission charge, but donations are gratefully appreciated.

The St. Johns Lions Club staff a concession stand offering light refreshments. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a wonderful concert every Wednesday evening through August 30.
