Karen Lorrine Gibbons-Schulze

Karen Lorrine Gibbons-Schulze, age 53, of Elsie, died on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid.

Karen was born in Carson City, Michigan on June 16, 1970, the daughter of Raymond Charles and Carol Sue (Devereaux) Gibbons. She graduated from Fowler High School, where she enjoyed playing softball. She was an avid reader, often found with a book in hand, and her love for animals was evident in her cherished companions, Fry and Lily, her loyal cats who offered her comfort and companionship. Karen found solace in the simplicity of her favorite TV shows: MASH, The Walton’s, and Little House on the Prairie. Her love for the color purple was indisputable, as was her love for Iris flowers, dragonflies, otters, and her treasured collection of wolf memorabilia.

She is survived by her husband, Chris Schulze of Elsie; her children, Garrett Gibbons of Elsie, Bailie Gibbons of Fenton; mother, Carol Gibbons of Fowler; brothers, Kirb and Leslie Gibbons of Dimondale, Keith Gibbons of Fowler, Kevin Gibbons of St. Johns, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Gibbons. 



A Memorial Gathering for Karen will be held at the Fowler VFW Post 3733, 126 N. Maple Street, Fowler, MI on Saturday October 28, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

William Dean Wilson Jr

William Dean (Bill) Wilson Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 1 in Casper, Wyoming at the age of 73, following a long courageous battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s.  

He is survived by his children Brandy L. Popp (Jerome) of Glenrock Wyoming, Catherine M. Quincey (Samuel) of Chiefland Florida, William D. Wilson III of Dunnellon Florida; 7 grandchildren, Brittany, Seth, Georgia, Michael, TJ, Kylee, McKenzie; 2 great-grandchildren, Paige and Avery.  He is also survived by his 6 siblings, Sharon, Robert, Thomas, Patricia, James, and John and his stepmother Roberta Wilson.  Bill was preceded in death by his father William D. Wilson Sr. and his mother Laura Anderson.

Bill joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968 and gave 12 years of his life to our nation, gallantly serving combat duty in Vietnam. Later service included Drill Instructor and Water Survival Instructor at Parris Island, and Recruiter for the Corps in Houston.  He was honorably discharged at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.  

A Marine in civilian clothing, Bill was a highly skilled control and instrumentation tech and electrician, working for Houston Lighting and Power, PCR, Chem Polymer, and Tec-Nor. He enjoyed leisure time with family at the pool or on a beach, scuba diving – he was a certified dive master – and fishing Lake Monticello with his brothers and son.

He married Pamela Bass in 1967; in 28 years together, they raised 3 children in the “Wilson Corps.” Bill did his best to instill the qualities of service and leadership in his children.  He later reconnected and spent 20 years with childhood sweetheart Wanda Lou (Cartwright) Hill.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the VFW in St. Johns, Michigan.  Military service in his honor and interment will take place Friday, October 27, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.

Douglas John Maurer

Douglas John Maurer, age 84, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2023 at Ovid Healthcare Center, Ovid, MI.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI, at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams presiding. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel. A Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Douglas was born in Lansing, MI on October 6, 1939, the son of Joseph E. and Frances (Smith) Maurer. He graduated from Resurrection Catholic School in Lansing. Doug married Nancy Mizger on May 15, 1980 in St. Johns, MI.

Doug was part owner and operated Maurer’s Industrial Laundry in Lansing for more than 20 years. He liked taking golf cart rides, sitting outside, and spending time with his friend Denny in Harrison. Doug always took care of his health, enjoyed running, and he jogged every day. Most of all, he loved time spent with his wife and step children. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, MI. He will be remembered for his laid back personality.

He is survived by wife Nancy Maurer; sons: Cliff and Dawn Clark, and Greg Clark, grandchildren: Jenny and Eric Vogel, Katie and Jered Carlson, Tina Clark, Michael and Jamie Clark, Johnny Deuel, Jessie Clark, Jack Carlson, Chevy Clark, and Adrianna Vogel. He is also survived by siblings: siblings: Dick Maurer, Jane Knapp, Larry Maurer, Tom Maurer, Bill Maurer and Chris Verhoegstrate. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Keith Clark, and brother Joseph Maurer.

Bonnie Stine

On October 7, 2023 Bonnie Stine left behind her earthly health struggles to begin a long-anticipated forever life. Bonnie Leigh Kimball was born Sept. 29, 1954 in St. Johns, MI, the daughter of Keith and Ruby (Acre) Kimball.

She has been a compassionate and caring registered nurse to patients in Carson City, MI and Naples and Lakeland FL, spending her final 30 years at LRMC as an ENT nurse and stroke registrar. She joyfully and faithfully served God by serving others, using her gifts of encouragement and hospitality to help countless patients, family, friends, and strangers.

Bonnie and husband Tim met and quickly fell in love 44 years ago on Marco Island, FL, where they were married December 29, 1979.

In addition to her husband, she leaves two daughters, Aimee Elizabeth Stine, and Megan Leigh Stine, both of Lakeland, to help their dad carry on her encouragement ministry. She also leaves a number of brothers/sisters-in-law, cousins, and nephews and nieces to attest to her legacy of love. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and brother Howard Kimball, all of St. Johns.

Bonnie will rest in Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, with her parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. A graveside service concluding her new-life celebration will take place Wednesday, Oct 18, 2023 at 11 a.m., followed by a gathering at the Colony School. The family suggests memorials in her name be made to the American Heart Association.
