Volunteers needed for tax prep assistance for older adults

The Tri-County Office on Aging and AARP partner each year to provide free tax preparation assistance to older adults in the Greater Lansing area. Volunteers are needed to make sure all persons in need of this assistance receive the service.

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program is the nation’s largest volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service. For many participants, a tax refund could mean they won’t have to choose between paying for groceries and keeping the lights on in their home.

No formal accounting or tax preparation experience is needed to volunteer as everyone will receive free tax training. Volunteers need only have a desire to help and be comfortable working with numbers. Training will be held during the month of January, and volunteers must past a certification exam prior to the official start of tax season. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of four hours per week. Those interested in volunteering should register via the AARP website at http://www.aarp.org/giving-back/. For more information about the program please call Vivian Baxter at 517-574-0315.

Adults 60 years of age and older from Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties with low to moderate incomes are eligible for help with their taxes between February 4 and April 15, 2019. Federal and state returns will be filed electronically, so customers with refunds will receive them in the shortest possible time. To make an appointment call 517- 887-1440 after January 2, 2019.
