Starlight Theatre Encore Presentation coming May 11
Michael Chan, affectionately dubbed “Lansing’s Gene Kelly,” with his rendition of “Singin’ in the Rain!”
Mid-Michigan residents are in for a Mother’s Day weekend treat when the popular Starlight Theatre presents their tribute to Hollywood with their production entitled, “Red Carpet Melodies: Movie Music for the Young at Heart.” This program will take place on Saturday, May 11 starting at 7:00 p.m. in the beautiful historic Wilson Center Auditorium.
“This show was originally produced in Lansing back in February to rave reviews,” says Bill Tennant, program coordinator. “It’s great to be able to present this fully staged production here in St. Johns over Mother’s Day weekend as part of the auditorium committee’s fundraising efforts. We hope that a lot of families will take advantage of this special opportunity.”
As you walk down the red carpet and take your seat, you will experience the magic of your favorite movie music through the decades, as Starlight Theatre salutes Hollywood’s award-winning songs. The songs presented are all taken from the American Film Institute’s Top 100 Songs list. You will hear songs like Moon River, Over the Rainbow, As Time Goes By, Singin’ In the Rain and many more. Classic movie snippets will also be shown on a large screen before many of the numbers, sure to stir nostalgia and smiles.
Directed by Dan Templin and Kelly Sandula-Gruner, along with choreographer Fran Ludington, the show includes a cast of 12 wonderful singers accompanied by a talented five-piece combo. There are four St. Johns residents involved in the show: singers Ellen Hoard and Kelly Bitz, flutist Tess Miller along with Darryl Schmitz who will be doing sound and video.
General Admission Tickets for this special program will be available at the door for only $10 with half of the proceeds going towards the Wilson Center Auditorium lighting project. The Wilson Center Auditorium is located at 101 W. Cass St. in downtown St. Johns, just south of the Courthouse.

Health Department conducting phone survey
If you receive a call from someone “on behalf of your local health department,” asking you to take a survey, don’t worry; it’s not a scam.
Randomly selected residents in Clinton, Gratiot and Montcalm counties will be asked to participate in a phone survey from Public Sector Consultants, on behalf of the Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD). The calls are currently being made and will be completed by the end of July.
The purpose of this short, 15 minute Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (BRFS) is to gather information on human behavior and lifestyle patterns, such as access to healthcare and health insurance, smoking, and exercise. Completing the survey will give MMDHD valuable information on the health and well-being of our residents, help determine strategies to improve health, and assist in securing funding to implement programs.
The calls will be coming from an out-of-state call center, manned by Survey Sampling International (SSI) employees, and may be identified on a caller ID as “SSI,” “SSI-Dynata,” or “Dynata.” The calls will be placed to landlines and cell phones on weekdays and weekends, and no later than 9:00 p.m.
The BRFS was established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a way to collect important health-related information. For many states and communities, the BRFS is the only available source of timely, accurate data.
Residents with questions regarding the phone survey may contact MMDHD at 989-831-3627.
