Deadline for matching grants in Wilson Center Auditorium Renovation is September 20
There’s still time to make a donation to the Wilson Center Auditorium Renovation project – and see the dollars multiply in value. The fund-raising committee received two major grants this summer that will ensure completion of work on a new lighting system which is a key element in renovations to the Wilson Center Auditorium.
“Over the past 10 years, many people have been part of the restoration of the 1925 Wilson Center Auditorium,” says committee member Bill Tennant. “Everything is complete except the last phase of the project – installing a completely new lighting system that was last updated in 1964. The antiquated system has too many problems. We need to move into the 21st century with new LED lighting with controls in the balcony.”
Matching grant funding was received from two major sources: a $52,000 grant from the Community Fund in Lansing and a $20,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “We need to raise the final $13,000 to receive both grants by September 20,” Tennant says. “Individual donations will be quadrupled with the two grants we have received.”

Filler to host informational meeting at Clinton Commons September 30
“We must do more to protect our senior population from abuse.”
As part of his commitment to supporting the elder members of our community, Rep. Graham Filler hosting an informational event for seniors on September 30 at noon at Clinton Commons in St. Johns. He provide information regarding their legal rights, wills and trusts, and community resources available to seniors.
“It is important that we recognize elder abuse as a serious problem in the state of Michigan,” Filler says. “It occurs in many different forms and is often committed by the people you least expect. It could be a close family member who exploits an aging loved one for money in the privacy of their own home, or a caregiver in an assisted living facility who takes out their aggression on patients. According to the Department of Justice, the most common forms of elder abuse are financial exploitation, neglect and psychological abuse.”
“We can all play a role in keeping our seniors safe by watching for signs of elder abuse,” he adds. Anonymous tips can be made by calling the Michigan elder abuse hotline at 855-444-3911.
