Sparrow Clinton Hospital Health Fair is September 28

 

Free health services will be available at AgroLiquid on Saturday, September 28 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Services will include: Flu shots, Blood pressure checks, Cholesterol and glucose testing and hearing and vision screenings.

Other activities will include:

– Ride the fresh food fairy cycle
– Explore the IQ Hub
– Relax with massage therapy
– Safe Kids Car Seat Fitting Station
– Cardio Drumming mini sessions
– Turn in unwanted and expired medication

K of C raffle and dinner coming up October 19

The annual Sportsman Raffle and Hog Roast and Turkey Fry sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus will be held on Saturday, October 19. The drawing will be held at 8:00 p.m. The Grand Knight’s drawing will be at 7:30 p.m. You need not be present to win.

The dinner including roasted pork, fried turkey, baked beans, cole slaw, corn bread and ice cream from Dershey’s will take place from 6-10 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Children 4 and under are free. Self-serve takeouts will be available.

Tickets will be available at Dershey’s or by calling 989-640-7252 or 640-1313. The dinner will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1108 N. US-27 in St. Johns.


Soup kitchen makes stops in area

His Cup Runneth Over, a mobile soup kitchen, will be making a stop at

– First Congregational Church, 100 Maple Ave, St. Johns 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, September 24

– The Meadows of St. Johns, 2265 W. Parks Rd., St. Johns, from 3 pm to 5 pm, Thursday, September 26.

Soup, bread, fruit and dessert will be served to all who come free of charge. For more information call 517-388-2005.


Helping Harvest Farm Relief is October 26

 

The new non-profit Helping Harvest Farm Relief is holdingtheir first major fundraiser event on October 26 at Uncle John’s Cider Mill. The Halloween-themed car show will also feature a costume contest, trunk or treating, silent auction, face painting, pumpkin patch scavenger hunt, and pumpkin decorating along with all of the amazing activities that Uncle John’s offers.

Vehicle classes for just about everyone include tractors, farm trucks, everyday drivers, off road vehicles, best decorated, as well as more tradition car show classes. The registration fee is $20, or $10 if you bring candy to pass out to trunk or treaters.

Helping Harvest Farm Relief helps primarily Michigan farmers during times of need as well as farmers in other states who are trying to recover from major natural disasters. They also strive to bring attention to the high suicide rates among farmers and those in the agriculture industry. This service includes how to spot suicide tendencies in others, and how to properly approach and help those individuals.


Community Halloween Party, October 29

 

St. Johns Big Boy invites you to a Community Halloween Party. All day 15% of sales will benefit advocacy work for abused children by The Voice for Clinton County’s Children.

Special activities planned form 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. include Superhero Friends from The League of Enchantment, Face Painting, and Trunk or Treat (weather permitting).

Briggs District Library News

TAB – Our first Teen Advisory Board Meeting of the fall will be on Tuesday, September 24 from 7:00-7:30pm. Joining TAB allows teens to earn volunteer hours by helping library staff plan teen programs, offering ideas about the library’s teen collection, and creating a welcoming space for all teens. All interested teens are welcome to join us. For more information, stop by the library and talk with Brett or Liz.

Sister Pie – Lisa Ludwinski, a 2019 Michigan Notable author, will be at the library Wednesday, September 25 from 6:30-7:30 to discuss her cookbook and her Detroit-based pie shop, Sister Pie. This special bakery has earned a following for its famous pies and cookies, as well as for its focus on employees, environment, and economy. No library card is needed to attend this free program, but advance registration is appreciated.

Euchre Club – Our adult Euchre Club will meet Friday, September 27 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. This free, fun, social is event is open to adults to register as single players or with a partner, and there is no cost or buy-in to play. Registration is very much appreciated, and is now available.

Window Painting – Tweens and teens can flex their artistic muscles when we gather to paint the library’s windows for Halloween. We will supply all the materials, so the painters can show up ready to create on Tuesday, October 1 at 6:30. Registration is appreciated, and begins Tuesday, September 3. On Tuesday, November 5 at 6:30 we will provide food and drinks when we gather to clean the windows and prep for a winter art project.

Chef’s Surprise – Budding chef’s ages 7-10 can join us on Tuesday, October 8 from 6:00-7:30pm when we’ll learn how to make a culinary creation. Registration is required.

When Hollywood Went to War – Historians Al and Dave Eicher are coming back to the library with another fascinating presentation on Monday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. When Hollywood Went to War features the real life stories of nearly 90 celebrities who served in the U.S. military during World War II. No library card is needed to attend this free program, but advance registration is appreciated.

PreReader Storytime: “Funny Fantastic Fabulous Favorites” – (ages4,5,and 6, independent listeners) Stories will be read that will make the children laugh out loud! Stories about potatoes, underwear, piranhas, a standing cat, and other fun tales. Their will be games, like “Crash, Splash or Moo!”, crafts, and music to make it even extra fun. This funny storytime will be offered on Thursday evenings, 6:30-7 p.m., October 17 – November 21. (No Session on October 31st) Registration is required. Join the funny, fantastic, fabulous fun!

Bookaholics Book Club – The Bookaholics will be reading Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple for its October selection. This is a heart-warming, funny story of a loving mom who becomes compelled to reconnect with her creative passions after years of sacrificing herself for her family. Her leap of faith takes her on an epic adventure that jumpstarts her life and leads her triumphantly to rediscovery. Copies of the book are now available. The club will meet on Thursday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the library. New members are always welcome to join.

Halloween Cook Me a Story – Join us on Monday, October 21 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. when we will create a mummy-tastic treat and more. No library card is needed for this free family program, but registration is required and begins on Monday, September 23. Note: This program will be held at Lowe United Methodist Church, 5485 W Lowe Rd, St. Johns.

Toddler Storytime– Wednesday mornings, 10:30-11:00 a.m., from October 23- November 20. Ages 2-3 with an adult. Registration is required and begins on Wednesday, September 25.

Garden Tuck-In – Help us wrap up another season in the Rae Johnson Children’s Garden on Saturday, October 26 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. by getting it ready for the winter and celebrating with food on the fire. Registration is required for this family event and begins on Saturday, September 28.

Force and Motion – The team from Impression 5 Science Museum will be at the library on Monday, October 28, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to guide us through an experiment all about force and motion. We will be creating a track for a marble and then use various materials to control its speed. This program is for children ages 8-12. Registration is required and begins on Monday, September 30.

Briggs Blend of Fun! – Chapter Chatter and Chef Surprise “Together” – As a group (ages 6-8) we will enjoy a short chapter book and prepare a different recipe over the 4-week session. The 1st week we will make an appealing appetizer, 2nd week, a scrumptious salad, 3rd week an excellent entrĂ©e, and the last week of course will be a delicious dessert. We will be making chocolates at OhMi Organics! The program is on Monday evenings, 7-7:45 p.m., November 4 thru November 25. Registration is required and opens on Monday, October 7. Limited to 12 registrations.

Holiday Program Entertainment– Children ages 7-12 can join us Tuesday evenings, November 5-26, from 7:00-7:45 to practice a cardio drumming routine that will be performed at the Holiday Program on Thursday, December 5. Registration is required and begins on Tuesday, October 8.

Tales to Tails – Ruger, a certified therapy dog will be back at the library this fall. Children ages 6-12 can sign up for a 15-minute session to practice reading aloud to Ruger on the 2nd or 4th Thursday of each month. Space is limited, and registration is required.

They guessed scoops of moon-dust, ounces of moon rock, and the number of space balls, stars, alien eyes, rocket parts and space objects. Congratulations to all!

Connections – Patrons needing help with OverDrive/Libby, RBDigital, or any of the library’s other e-services will be able to come to the library for drop-in tech help each Wednesday from 2:00-3:00 p.m.
