Board reviews Wilson Center bids

The St. Johns Public Schools Board of Education opened bids for the purchase of the Wilson Center on April 17. Three bids were offered.
Ken Harris offered $25,219. He proposed to restore historic building features where possible, provide access for tours of the building and provide housing at an average fair market rate, targeting tenants that appreciate the structure.
Jeff Deehan of Dymaxion Development bid $50,000. He proposed to continue to allow community use of the auditorium and gym with a $1 per year lease plus the group handling their own operational expense; provide up to 72 housing units – a mix between market rate apartments, age friendly housing, multi-generational housing, and potential senior housing.
Clinton County offered $500,000 for the property. Under this proposal within 60 months, the St. Johns School District would be required to demolish the existing buildings and improvements at the district’s sole cost and expense.
These bids will be discussed at the Board’s next reguarly scheduled Zoom meeting on Monday night, April 27. For more information or to participate in the Zoom meeting visit https://www.sjredwings.org/boardofeducation/.
Buddy Poppy Days go online
In deference to this pandemic we are facing, the St. Johns Veterans of Foreign Wars is officially going online for the first time for Buddy Poppy Days. With the lose of our hall rentals and other key events we must adapt during these trying times.
Buddy Poppy Days has been a long-standing tradition for the VFW nationwide for over 100 years. It is a way for VFW Posts around the country to help aid and assist worthy veterans and family members in what ever way possible.
Needless to say, because of COVID-19’s tragic reach the St. Johns VFW need to take their Poppy Days online. The goal of this weekend and the little flowers that people wear proudly is to help your local veterans and families get through the month, have something to eat, and get them through the holidays. They are implementing Operation TAC (Troops Against CoronaVirus) where they are using portions of the Relief Fund earned to support others with gift cards for groceries.
Any donation of over $5 received will be noted at the VFW Post for the year on their new “Buddy Poppy Days Wall of Honor” which will have your name among others who helped to donate to keep our VFW going.
This year’s goal of $5000 is based on the traditional amount of money raised during buddy poppy days along with a month worth of rentals. They hope that everyone understands that they are trying something different and hope that after this Pandemic is over, they can all go back to the great events that they are used to hosting while helping Veterans in need.
