Streets renewed in 1938
by Barry Bauer
We’re all familiar with street repair and replacement going on around town. It’s an ongoing project that needs to be done if we are going to go from place to place without chipping our teeth or bruising our kidneys. When they’ve finished the project it’s time to start all over again.

In 1938 eight blocks on Higham, Mead, and Swegles Sts. were repaved in St. Johns. In this photo a tar-spreading crew were spraying a seal coat on the intersection of Higham and Swegles Sts. The coat of tar was in preparation for the blacktop crew to come in and lay down their mixture of tar and gravel.
For the property owners it had been a summer of street construction and they were looking forward to the project coming to an end.
