Commissioner Jackson Retires/Results Of Election: Bill Jackson completed his tenure as City Commissioner when he chose not to run for re-election this November after serving two consecutive terms. During his time as a commissioner he demonstrated a true commitment to the City and a vision for its future. His contributions over the years are greatly appreciated. His leadership will be missed. Congratulations to Robert Craig for winning a commissioner seat and to Mayor Dana Beaman in his successful re-election bid.
Street Millage Vote: The four year, four mill street vote passed by a significant margin in the recent local election held on November 5th. The dedicated funds will be used for what is best described as a heavy maintenance program for street repaving and associated “fixes”. City staff has walked each city street and have put in place the staging for phase one of the street program. Once the asphalt companies open in the spring of 2014 residents will begin seeing street repair activities. The additional millage levy will first appear on summer 2014 tax bills. If your taxes are paid through your bank or mortgage lender it might be worthwhile to contact them to insure adequate monies are being escrowed for this additional millage.
Leaf Pick Up And Disposal: The City’s bagged leaf pick up is winding down as winter closes in. This method of disposal is encouraged by city staff, as it minimizes the accumulation of leaves in the city storm water sewer system. Loose leaves left in piles near the curb (not in the street) will be removed by city crews as weather permits. If you need more leaf bags they can be obtained at no charge from the City Offices or by calling DPW supervisor Steve Rademacher at 224-8944, ext. 229.
Financial Audit Highlights Sound Fiscal Position: The City’s “Comprehensive Annual Financial Report” for fiscal year 2012-2013 was summarized by a representative of the Rehmann Robson accounting firm at the November 25th City Commission meeting. The audit findings reflected the City’s continued sound financial position in the face of difficult economic times. By all indicators, the operating budget was well-managed by city staff during the last fiscal year. For the thirteenth straight year the City received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Award for excellence in financial reporting. Fewer than 5% of Michigan municipalities receive this annual award. After receiving the report City Commissioners complimented city staff on its wise and frugal management of the annual budget.
Christmas Must Be Right Around The Corner: The City’s Annual Santa Parade of Lights, sponsored by the Principal Shopping District and DDA, is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6th at 5:45. Mayor Dana Beaman will present the key to the City to our guest, Santa Claus. The Clinton County Arts Council also has events planned for the holiday season, including the “Ha Ha Holiday Show” being performed by Three Men and a Tenor on December 4th at the newly renovated St Johns High School auditorium.
