Festivities include picture taking with Santa Claus and a famous local icon
On December 12, 2010 the Crosby Mint Farm will once again open its gates to the public for a holiday event for the entire family. Goal: to raise $4000 for America’s poverty stricken backyard; the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation in Oklahoma.
From St. Johns to Oklahoma
Carol Schafer Redbird, former resident of St. Johns, moved to the reservation in 2002 with her husband. Her new hometown, Kingfisher is only 1000 miles away from St. Johns, but the situation resembles a third world country. She writes about her experiences in an email to old classmate Linette Crosby:
“Last winter, 3 tornados went through town and knocked out the power. The Cheyenne/Arapaho tribe here in Oklahoma is in financial distress. My husband was Santa for the tribe and we traveled all over the reservation. There were very few toys to give the kids and some got nothing… The sad thing is that a lot of kids live with their grandparents and the grandparents are on social security. On the worst parts of the reservation the kids have no shoes and coats. I have seen 2 year olds last year in winter with just a diaper on. It broke my heart. These kids’ faces just lit up to see Santa last year.”
The Crosbys took the chance to give back to a community in need after they received so much support and help themselves during a time the farm was in distress.
Farm Event; everybody’s invited.
The public (all ages!) is invited to the farm on 12-12-2010 between 11am and 5pm to drop off monetary donations, goods, (gently) used and clean winter clothes, shoes, toys, or gifts. All donations are much appreciated and are tax exempt.
A decked out mint store will be open as well and 5% of all sales that day will be donated to the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribe. There will be activities for young and old to enjoy: bonfire, marshmallows, hot coco, music, lights, Santa Claus and a very special local celebrity to take your picture with.
Drop Off Locations in the Area
For people who cannot make it to the event, there are three alternative locations throughout the area to drop off donations:
– Lansing City Market – At the Get Mint Trading Co. Booth. T-Fr 11-7pm, Sat. 9-5pm.
