Janet (Kloeckner) Halfmann’s new book Eggs 1, 2, 3
St. Johns native and children’s author Janet (Kloeckner) Halfmann’s newly released book, Eggs 1, 2, 3: Who Will the Babies Be? won a Gold Best Book Award from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio.
The judges had this to say about the book, for ages 3 and up: “Young science and counting all in one charming book about the many creatures that hatch from eggs.”
In Eggs 1, 2, 3 ten colorful spreads with fold-outs lead young readers from a single penguin egg to an ostrich’s clutch of 10 eggs. Song-like, non-rhyming verses give clues for guessing who might hatch. Flip the flap to find out “Who will the babies be?”
Here’s an excerpt from the book:
Five eggs, softly glowing,
lighting up the grass on a summer night.
Who will the babies be?
(Lift the flap to reveal)
5 wiggly glowworms,
their tiny tails shining,
growing up to be fireflies.
Eggs 1, 2, 3 is published by Blue Apple Books. Art is by Betsy Thompson, who uses richly textured papers and fabrics to fashion cut-paper collages.
The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio was founded in 1989 as the only independent consumer review of children’s media by child development experts Joanne and Stephanie Oppenheim. The awards have become a benchmark of excellence with consumers, toy makers, and the media. Testing is done by educators, parents, and kids.
