Homecoming 2013: Lost In Wonderland
by Maralyn Fink
After a year off of roaming the halls at SJHS due to construction, I wandered up to see what was going on with this year’s Homecoming. I was met by Jennifer Eaton who was happy to let me know just what the plans were.
The planning begins in late spring a few weeks before school closes for the summer. The first meeting is totally focused on the Homecoming, and they will break into smaller groups to work on the project each group will have. They also meet in the summer to focus on “the little stuff”. The theme this year was “Lost In Wonderland”.
The Student Council has 30 members. Jason Gnegy is the Advisor of the group. The Student Council is responsible for the Homecoming and decides on the decorations and what they need. Some of the decorations are handmade by them.
I attended on Friday afternoon to see how everything was going and then returned Friday evening when everything was in full swing. I was amazed at how everything transformed into the theme. Students were off in groups doing their job. The courtyard was readied for the dance, weather permitting.
Returning to the school for the dance, everything had come to life with light effects, decorations in their proper place, and students enjoying the sights and sounds.
I walked about, visiting with teachers, students and wandered out to the courtyard. Wow, the soft lighting was fantastic along with the sky full of stars.
Dancing had started and everyone was having a great time. The King and Queen and Court were introduced at 9:30 making for a lot of hoopla from their classmates.
I continued to roam taking pictures when all of a sudden I spotted what appeared to be a refreshment table……..maybe? I sprinted in that direction and what did I see . . .Cookies! Now, I’m in heaven – just a few for the road.
I want to thank Mr. Gnegy, The Student Council, Jennifer, and Tyler Wilkie for providing me with information on their big night. Each and every one, especially Mr. Gnegy all work very hard on this dance and deserve the recognition from the whole school, faculty, and the general public. I thank you for sharing the night.
