Four centuries Of Sampler making at the Museum
On Tuesday, September 18, 2012 Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum presented a program “Stitches in Time: Four Centuries of Sampler Making” given by Cristy Lee Bennett, M.A. Many Museum members and guests were in attendance at this exciting program.

In the PGS Museum Collection is an 1819 English sampler stitched by seven-year-old Anne Pearson. Cristy conservation framed the sampler early this year. The sampler is now on permanent display in the Museum parlor.
Cristy’s talk included looking at samplers through time using examples from her own collection, and how samplers have changed over time. A special highlight of Cristy’s talk was the Anne Pearson sampler and its conservation treatment.
Genealogists from the Clinton County Historical Society (CCHS) Archives were on hand to share their research on Anne Pearson and the journey of her sampler from Yorkshire, England to Clinton County, MI.
The donor of the sampler, Edwin Howard Lyon, Jr., was the Great Grandson of Anne Pearson. He was born in St. Johns, MI.
Anne Pearson was born in 1808 in Easington, Yorkshire, England. Anne came to Lenawee County, Michigan in 1837 with her family where she married James Flint. Their daughter, Anna E. Flint married Warner P. Bunday. The daughter of Anna and Warner P. Bunday, Wallis “Nellie” Bunday, married Edwin Howard Lyon, Sr. The son of “Nellie” and Edwin Howard Lyon, Edwin Howard Lyon Jr., was the donor of the sampler.
A genealogy chart is available at the Museum with a detailed description of the Clinton County Historical Society Archives’ research into the family tree of Edwin Howard Lyon, Jr.
The sampler can be viewed on Sundays 1-4 pm or Wednesdays 2-7 pm.
