Now it can be told: 60 year old mystery solved

[Editor’s note: This piece of St. Johns history comes to us from a collection of tales assembled by the Class Of 1965. We have been assured by Attorney Greg Jilka that the statute of limitations has probably run out on any misdeeds recounted herein.
Here is how Arthur Charley Caudy tells it.
]

It was a beautiful fall evening in 1961 and our group, consisting of Bill Sirrine, Ken Bartholomew, Eddy Mc Dowell, and Jerry Kubica were out to have some fun. We all met at Osgood Funeral Home in the workshop where Bill was busy printing up funeral cards. When Bill’s job was finished, I grabbed a can of spray paint, and we were off to adventures unknown.

We ended up at the old water tower about 9:00 PM. I immediately knew what needed to be done. I placed the can of paint inside my shirt and climbed to the top and sprayed “Class of 196?,” so as not to identify ourselves with a class year.

When I finished I wrapped the can of paint in my shirt and pitched it to the ground screaming as if I fell to my death. Bill yelled out “OH SHIT”. Then I laughed out loud saying, “Just Kidding.”

The guys said that was not funny, Charley, but finally saw the twist of humor.

The Clinton County News printed a story stating that apparently the person responsible was not sure when they were to graduate from school. This was baiting to have the unknown person to start bragging about the event.

Well, it worked; and Everett Glazier summoned me to Police Headquarters. He was not angry at all. He just stated the facts. Everett told me I passed two high voltage 440 lines on the way up the water tower. Then went on to say I would have to pay $12 for repainting over the “Class of 6?”

At the end of our meeting he hoped I would be careful and informed me he was not concerned if or when the payment was ever to be made. Everett was a good cop, and a very decent man.
