SJHS Athletic Hall of Fame Induction
by Maralyn Fink
On Friday evening I attended the Hall of Fame Induction at St. Johns High School. The evening began with a meal in the food commons followed by a short program.
Many pictures were taken of the inductees, and then they were taken to the football field for the Induction ceremony during half time.
The inductees included: Jeffrey R. Flermoen (Swimming, Golf), Keith Haske (Football, Basketball, Baseball), Laurie (Rehmann) Hoppough (Basketball, Volleyball), Abby Wiseman (Basketball, Softball) and the 1953-54 Boys Basketball Team.
It was great seeing so many people attend and seeing people I had not seen for awhile also. Congratulations to all.
Training for Dairy Farms to be held October 23

MSU Extension will offer training for dairy farm owners and employees on Low Stress Animal Handling and Down Cow Management on October 23 in Westphalia, Michigan. This hands-on training is designed specifically for dairy farms and will be offered in English and Spanish Faith Cullens, Dairy Educator, Michigan State University Extension.
Did you know that cattle perceive yelling just as negatively as hitting? Cattle have very sensitive ears and what we may perceive as a little motivation to get them to move quicker, they perceive as very stressful. Cows that are less fearful and less stressed will produce more milk and have fewer slip and fall accidents. Low stress animal handling techniques will have positive results on the cattle, employees and the dairy’s bottom line. It is important that everyone in contact with cattle be taught the basic principles of cattle behavior to provide a low stress environment on your farm.
Unfortunately, the situation arises on farms where cows slip and fall or have a metabolic issue and cannot get up on their own. Having a plan in place and trained employees can make the difference between failure and a successful recovery in a down cow case. Farms must have a strategy and people trained on appropriate methods for getting cows up or out of dangerous situations.
On most dairy farms today, the large majority of employees were not raised around cattle and taught cattle behavior by grandpa. They learn about cattle behavior – right or wrong- when they get their first job on a farm and are usually taught by a co-worker, who might not have been trained either. Providing training or reinforcing prior teachings on stockmanship and handling down cows is imperative for every dairy operation.
Participants will learn the concepts in a short classroom session followed by hands-on training with dairy animals. This instruction will be given in Spanish and English and will have the participation of veterinarian, Dr. Jerry Kehr of Countyline Veterinary Service. This program will fulfill the National FARM program requirement for annual training for all farm employees in stockmanship. There is no fee with this training and RSVPs are appreciated and encouraged.
